New Grilli: Reliever Jason Grilli and wife Danielle welcomed their first child on Wednesday (2/6/2008). A baby boy named Jayse Rowan Grilli arrived weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces. Both mother and child are reportedly doing fine.

Reliever Grilli hopes to avoid being grilled by Tigers fans this season

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers reliever Jason Grilli has every confidence he will continue to do a good job this season. He just hopes Tigers fans will acknowledge the same thing.

Grilli got off to a rough start last season -- he had an ERA of 7.59 in his first 16 outings -- and the fans let him hear about it. Even though Grilli turned it around in the second half of the year -- he had an ERA of 3.70 in his last 41 appearances -- he had a tough time shaking his shaky reputation.

"They have the right, they buy a ticket and they can boo me or cheer me," Grilli said. "But I obviously wouldn't be here if I wasn't doing my job."

"I think I've been pretty consistent, and, hopefully, I can change their tune a little bit as well."

Manager Jim Leyland said the Tigers need Grilli to have a strong season.

"I think early on he was pressing a little bit," Leyland said of Grilli's slow start last season. "It was a little bit different scenario than it was the year before. I think that's only natural. He's one of the keys for us."

Grilli's role changed last season when injuries hit late-inning setup men Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya. Instead of pitching in the middle innings, Grilli was called on later in the games, and his role intensified.

"That takes a little adjusting to, in fairness to him," Leyland said. "I think that was part of it. It was a different situation, and it took him some time to adjust to it. He certainly has all the equipment to be very, very good for us."

Grilli was 3-1 and had an ERA of 1.91 in 25 appearances away from home last season (he was 2-2, 7.92 in 32 home games).

"A lot of people look at the box score and say, 'He sucks,' or they look at the ERA and say, 'He sucks.' That's not a fair assessment," Grilli said. "If you understand this game, it's more than just looking at numbers.

"Did I get better over the course of the year? Yeah. But was I consistent from the beginning to the end? I think so. I know what it takes to be at my best, and when I'm off-kilter a little bit, I know what it takes to get back. Sometimes, I came out smelling like a rose and getting away with bad pitches, and other times, when I'm doing everything right, I can't buy a break. But that's part of the game.

"You've got to stay level-headed about the whole thing, and that's why I love getting the ball every day, because you've got the opportunity to redeem yourself. One day you can be the goat, and the next day you can be the hero. That's the great thing about being a relief pitcher."

Not all of Grilli's numbers were bad.

"I've been pretty consistent, and the one statistic nobody really writes about with me is my inherited runners and inherited runners scored," Grilli said. "Screw my ERA. If you have one bad outing in the bullpen, it can screw up your ERA pretty good."

Grilli inherited 53 runners last season, and 16 of them scored. That ranked 24th in the American League.

But, in fairness to Grilli, he is not a one-batter specialist who needs one out to do his job. There are times when he has to come in and get two or three outs to get out of the inning.

"My job is to come in and stop the bleeding in the game, and I've done that two years in a row," Grilli said. "Look at the statistic, and it's pretty good. I pride myself on that."

Go Jason! He will get the job done this year!
