Technically, you have to claim that when you're filing your taxes. Just because you are getting cash instead of a paycheck doesn't mean you can avoid paying taxes.
Just like if you sell drugs, lemonade, or mow a lawn. You're suppose to claim it.
You even have to claim gambling winnings. If you chose to be a professional gambler, you can deduct expenses, like playing cards and such. bobrob is correct, but you can deduct your expenses like gas, wear and tear on your car getting there, or anything you have to buy to perform your job.

If you use your car strictly to go to and from your work. If you only use it 85% of the time for work, then you can only deduct 85% of the expenses. There is a threshold, I want to say you have to use it for over 50% for work or you can't deduct it.

| You are correct, you can't take all the car expense. You can take the amount of use of your car, by millage (that is what I did in running my computer company.) You have to keep a record of millage and then I used the set per mile amount that the govt has set each year.
Chances are you will not need to file income tax if you are at the minimum, but I filed, even in slow years, so you could get credit for paying into social security.

Do they really expect people to claim these types of earnings? I obviously won't be Here's my problem with having to claim this money.... My mom is writing me a check via my grandmother's bank accounts. The money in my grandmother's accounts has already been taxed. Why should I have to pay taxes on taxed money? When I spend it I'll be taxed again. If I later decide I want someone to mow our lawn and pay them technically they'd have to pay taxes on money I had to pay taxes on that I received from someone who had to pay taxes on it. If the money changes hands enough and everyone does what they "technically" are supposed to do, there won't be any money left. If I find a coin on the ground I pay taxes on that, too, right? What about if I exchange a dollar bill for 4 quarters? ---------------- Also, back when I was in college my mom used to deposit $1000 in my savings account monthly to pay rent. Was I supposed to pay taxes on this, too?

| Welcome to the wacky money grubbing world of our government! Now you know why I hate the tax and spend attitude of non conservatives! But you are a social liberal, where do you think they get the money for all those social goodies? Tax, tax and more tax! - Quote :

deposit $1000 in my savings account monthly to pay rent. Was I supposed to pay taxes on this, too? Did you have to work for it? No, it was part of your mom's contribution to your education process. It was a gift that did not require any labor in return (even though studying is hard work...) Now you know why I am also against death taxes on estates too. The money was taxed over and over again, then when a person dies, the government wants another chunk of cash!

| There's no taxes on gifts then? If that's the case I'm not getting money for giving my grandmother food (I'm a nice guy ). She's just giving me graduation gifts. She's not rich enough to give them all at once so she spreads them out in the form of a weekly payment. I'm a social liberal (probably as liberal as you can get socially) but economically I'm more moderate (but still liberal). I am against bailouts in any form. | |

| Gift tax rules from the IRS:
Who pays the gift tax? The donor is generally responsible for paying the gift tax. Under special arrangements the donee may agree to pay the tax instead. Please visit with your tax professional if you are considering this type of arrangement.
What is considered a gift? Any transfer to an individual, either directly or indirectly, where full consideration (measured in money or money's worth) is not received in return.
What can be excluded from gifts? The general rule is that any gift is a taxable gift. However, there are many exceptions to this rule. Generally, the following gifts are not taxable gifts.
1. Gifts that are not more than the annual exclusion for the calendar year. 2. Tuition or medical expenses you pay for someone (the educational and medical exclusions). 3. Gifts to your spouse. 4. Gifts to a political organization for its use.
In addition to this, gifts to qualifying charities are deductible from the value of the gift(s) made.
May I deduct gifts on my income tax return? Making a gift or leaving your estate to your heirs does not ordinarily affect your federal income tax. You cannot deduct the value of gifts you make (other than gifts that are deductible charitable contributions). If you are not sure whether the gift tax or the estate tax applies to your situation, refer to Publication 950, Introduction to Estate and Gift Taxes.
How many annual exclusions are available? The annual exclusion applies to gifts to each donee. In other words, if you give each of your children $11,000 in 2002-2005, $12,000 in 2006-2008, and $13,000 on or after January 1, 2009, the annual exclusion applies to each gift.
The gift tax is only due when the entire $1000000 lifetime gift tax amount is surpassed.

Starting pay is $2065-$2507/month Given that I have a bachelor's degree when an 8th grade diploma is required, have 2 years experience when 6 months is suggested (not required), the fact I have family that works there, I am fluent in Spanish, and that I personally know two people on the interview committee, I think I should be able to get this job

I can't believe any job would pay over 2 grand a month and not require at least a High School Grad or GED Holder It's the state. That's why they're broke. A psychiatric technician out there (requires HS Diploma/GED and 1 year of paid training) pays over $50,000/yr. Also, $2000 a month isn't much in this area. You can't get an apartment for less than about $800

Even so
Jobs should require a HS Diploma or GED
I agree that a good job should. This job pays too much. Ideally, a job like this would pay less but require the same experience. I mean sure everyone should have a GED or HS Diploma, but some people don't and they should have some opportunities - just not good ones. Actually, here's the best solution (one that would never be implemented): Allow people without their GED to have this job and get the pay they get, but force them to be in GED training and get their GED in an agreed upon time. The state has a 20-20 program where you get your pay and work 20 hours a week while going to school. Once you graduate you have to work there for I don't know how long. This job should have something like that.

It went pretty well although I fucked up majorly when I forgot to mention I speak Spanish at any point in the interview They asked if I was related to Debby Donahue (she's my mom) and when I answered the question their reply was sometimes it's good having family working there if you're trying to get a job. There are 17 openings - 2 full-time and 15 part-time. I don't really care which I get if hired because everyone tells me that with a degree they won't let me keep that job long - there's too many other positions they could give me.

| All our past relatives, who cane to America, had to learn English in able to function in society, so why should we have to change. And I would rather see the money go to teaching new immigrants English, than all the money we waste on having to put 2 or more languages on EVERYTHING we get, or all signs.
CA, NM, and AZ are the main states with a Spanish language problem.... Look how many people immigrated through NY, yet they were able to learn English.

| Go to New York. As John Rocker infamously said you can walk two blocks without hearing a word of English. I wouldn't say the three states you mentioned are the only three.
From what I understand, my great-grandparents on my mother's side died speaking very little English (they were Italian).
It is very difficult to learn a second language as an adult. I spent seven years studying Spanish. While I am generally able to communicate effectively with people who speak Spanish, I wouldn't dare give an interview in Spanish.
I've also spent significant time in Spain and Mexico to improve my skills.
Many people who do not speak English "fluently" have a basic understanding of the language and make an effort. Some do not which is a shame.
I have no problem with legal documents and what not being in several languages. Technical writing is very difficult to understand in a foreign language.
I do agree that there should be more resources to help people learn though. Back when I worked in fast food a lot of the cooks were generally interested in learning English but didn't know where to go. School was very expensive (several hundred dollars for just one semester) and when you're making minimum wage that's not really feasible. Not being able to speak English makes it rather difficult to get a non-minimum wage job.

There are 17 openings - 2 full-time and 15 part-time. I don't really care which I get if hired because everyone tells me that with a degree they won't let me keep that job long - there's too many other positions they could give me.
English should be the language in this country
Enough of this bilingual BS The inmates often don't speak English. Would you like your tax dollars to fund language classes for them?
Also, you get extra money if you're a bilingual employee. We outta send those inmates back to their own countries I bet most of them are illegal Why the fuck they here in the first place INS needs to deport them
