Weber Goes The Distance in 2-1 Win
07/23/2010 9:38 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves, behind a complete game performance by Thad Weber, took down the Binghamton Mets in the second game of a four-game series at NYSEG Stadium by a score of 2-1.

Binghamton struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Weber. With one out, Nick Evans turned on a Weber pitch and homered to left. The solo shot was the 17th for Evans and it gave the Mets 1-0 advantage.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the third inning when Chris White, in his second game since returning from Class-A Lakeland, homered to left off of Mets starter Mark Cohoon, tying the game at 1-1.

Erie then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Shawn Roof led off and was hit by a pitch. Cesar Nicolas then singled to left putting two on for Rawley Bishop. Bishop laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing the runners into scoring position. The Mets walked Audy Ciriaco setting up a potential double play ball. Kody Kaiser put the 'Wolves ahead with an opposite-field single, scoring Roof for a 2-1 lead.

The one-run advantage would prove to be plenty for Weber as he tossed his first complete game since throwing a no-hitter last August. He faced three over the minimum allowing a run on four this with no walks and four strikeouts while throwing 115 pitches.

It was the third time in four starts and fourth time in his last six starts that he did not issue a walk. The complete game was the third of Weber's career.

Weber, the league leader in innings pitched (133.1) has worked at least five innings in all 20 of his starts and has gone at least 6.2 innings in 13 of his last 16 starts.

The SeaWolves will look to make it two consecutive wins on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Duane Below (3-9, 4.57 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Chris Schwinden (4-6, 5.37 ERA).

'Wolves Fall to Mets in Slugfest
07/25/2010 1:21 AM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves failed in their attempt to win back-to-back games, falling in the third game of the four-game series at NYSEG Stadium to the Binghamton Mets 13-8.

Binghamton struck for an eight-spot in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Duane Below and reliever Cory Hamilton. In the inning, the Mets sent 12 hitters to the plate against the two Erie pitchers. Heavy rains played an issue as both Erie pitchers had trouble with footing on the hill, walking a season-high six hitters in the inning. Five of the eight runs were charged to Below while the other three were charged to Hamilton.

In the top of the second, Erie had a leadoff double by Deik Scram and a one-out walk by Jeff Kunkel before the umpires called for the tarp. A one hour and 49 minute rain delay followed. When the game resumed, Chris White blasted a three-run home run to right making it an 8-3 game.

Erie cut the Mets lead down to a pair in the top of the third against reliever Edgar Ramirez. Rawley Bishop single and Audy Ciriaco walked with one out bringing Scram to the plate. Scram laced his second double of the game left, scoring Bishop. Both Ciriaco and Scram would come home to score on a groundout by Kody Kaiser and a single by Kunkel to make it 8-6.

The Mets went back ahead by five in the bottom of the third when Kirk Niewenhuis connected on a two-out, three run home run against reliever Jose Ortega for an 11-6 lead.

Erie cut into the lead once again in the fifth when Alden Carrithers singled home Scram and Kaiser with the bases loaded making it an 11-8 game.

Erie would get no closer as the Mets added two more runs in the sixth against Josh Rainwater to go ahead 13-8.

Below (3-10) allowed five runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work. It was his shortest outing of the season.

Erie looks to salvage a series split on Sunday afternoon...1:05 First Pitch.

Shawler Strong as 'Wolves Earn Series Split
07/25/2010 4:49 PM ET

Recap Box

Three Erie pitchers held down one of the most potent offenses in the league as the 'Wolves earned a series split with a 4-1 win over the Binghamton Mets on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the fifth against Mets starter Mike Antonini. Deik Scram led off the inning with a bloop double to right. He would come home to score on a one-out single by Andy Bouchie for a 1-0 lead.

The 'Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning against reliever Eric Niesen when Bouchie blasted an opposite-field solo home run, his eighth.

Binghamton got on the board against Erie starter Anthony Shawler in the bottom of the seventh. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off with a double off the wall in left. He would come home to score on a one-out double by Josh Satin making it a 2-1 game. Shawler would get out of the inning with the lead as the Mets stranded the tying run at third.

The 'Wolves add to the lead in the eighth. Cesar Nicolas drew a four-pitch, one-out walk brining Rawley Bishop to the plate. Bishop slammed an opposite-field, two run home run around the right field foul pole, his fourth, for a 4-1 lead.

Shawler gave way to Zach Simons who tossed a scorless eighth inning. Lester Oliveros earned his second save by striking out the side in the ninth, preserving the Erie victory.

Shawler (2-2) earned his first win as a starting pitcher in five games. He allowed a run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a season-high seven innings of work. It was Shawlers longest outing since September 7, 2009 when he tossed eight innings in a loss to Fort Wayne while pitching with West Michigan.

The SeaWolves return home to Jerry Uht Park on Monday night to take on the Altoona Curve...7:05 First Pitch. It will be BUCK NIGHT. Righty Brooks Brown (8-6, 3.89 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against lefty Jeff Locke (1-0, 0.82 ERA).

Nine-Run Eighth Dooms SeaWolves
07/26/2010 10:54 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves failed in their attempt to win back-to-back games as they surrendered nine runs in the top of the eighth inning and fell to the Altoona Curve by a score of 11-2.

Altoona struck first against Erie starter Brooks Brown in the top of the fifth. Brandon Jones led off with a single and he was doubled home by Yung Chi Chen for a 1-0 lead. Chen would come home to score on a one-out single by Anthony Norman for a 2-0 lead.

The 'Wolves battled back against Altoona starter Jeff Locke in the bottom of the sixth. Locke had retired nine of his first 15 outs via strikeout but the 'Wolves finally cashed in against the lefty in the sixth. Shawn Roof blooped a single to right and Billy Nowlin was hit by a pitch to put two on base for Rawley Bishop. Bishop singled up the middle, scoring Roof to make it a one-run game at 2-1. Deik Scram followed and extended his current hitting streak to four straight on a base knock to center, scoring Nowlin, tying the game at 2-2.

The game would remain tied until the top of the eighth when Altoona exploded for nine, putting the game out of reach. Brown faced the first three hitters of the inning. Anthony Norman led off with a double and he advanced to third on a single by Chase d'Arnaud. Matt Hague singled to left, scoring Norman for a 3-2 Curve lead. Brown would exit for reliever Luis Marte. Jordy Mercer laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing the runners into scoring position. Erie then intentionally walked Chris Watts to set up a potential double play against Miles Durham. The plan did not work as Durham turned a Marte pitch into Altoona's first grand slam for the season and a 7-2 lead. Jones followed with his second hit and Chen followed with his first home run for a 9-2 advantage. Altoona would push two more runs across for an 11-2 lead.

Brown (8-7) allowed five runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work.

Erie and Altoona meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. RHP Brayan Villarreal (0-1, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Bryan Morris (4-4, 4.78 ERA).

Iorg Walkoff Gives Erie the Win in 13
07/27/2010 11:04 PM ET

Recap Box

It took 12 and a half innings before either team scored a run on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park but the SeaWolves prevailed on a walkoff home run for a 2-0 win over the Altoona Curve.

Both starting pitchers, Altoona's Bryan Morris and Erie's Brayan Villarreal were stellar in taking no-decisions. Morris went five allowing two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Villarreal, in his second Double-A start, went 7.2 innings, allowing four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The only threat against Villarreal came in the eighth inning when Miles Durham led off with a double. Erie got out of the threat as Villarreal retired the next two and Zach Simons finished off the inning.

Simons would stay in the game and throw 2.1 innings of one-hit ball allowing a walk with two strikeouts.

Altoona threatened against Cory Hamilton in the top of the 13th. With two outs, Anthony Norman singled and stole second. Deik Scram made a shoe string catch on a fly ball off the bat of Chase d'Arnaud to send the game to the bottom of the 13th with no score.

In the bottom of the 13th, Altoona turned the ball over to reliever Derek Hankins. With one out, Alden Carrithers connected on a single up the middle putting the wining run on base for Cale Iorg. With Iorg hitting, Carrithers stole second, his second steal of the game. Iorg then crushed a game-winning, two-run home run giving the SeaWolves a 2-0 win in 13. The home run for Iorg was his first since June 22 against Trenton.

The walkoff was Erie's second against Altoona and it snapped a five-game losing streak to the Curve. The 'Wolves first win of the season came on a walk-off home run by Max St. Pierre against the Curve on April 18.

Erie and Altoona meet in the rubber game of the three game series on Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Righty Thad Weber (7-10, 3.85 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against lefty Justin Wilson (7-6, 3.15 ERA).

Brown Hurls Complete Game Shutout Against Reading
08/06/2010 9:56 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves, behind Brooks Brown league leading fourth complete game, shut out the Reading Phillies 3-0 on Friday night at First Energy Stadium en route to their second straight win.

Erie got on the board in the top of the second against Reading starter J.C. Ramirez when Billy Nowlin led off and connected on a solo home run to left-center, his third, for a 1-0 lead. Erie would go on to load the bases in the inning but failed to score any more runs.

In the fourth, Bryan Pounds walked with one out bringing Jeff Kunkel to the plate. Kunkel connected on a two-run home run to right, his fourth, for a 3-0 lead.

The three runs would be enough for the Erie starter Brown. Reading would not get more than two baserunners on in an inning as Brown faced four over the minimum in the game. In the third, the Phillies got back-to-back two-out singles by Michael Spidale and Harold Garcia. Kunkel eliminated the threat as he threw out Spidale attempting to steal third. Kunkel was 2-for-2 in the game throwing out would be base stealers.

In the fifth, the Phils would again get two on with a Kyle Overbeck base hit and a hit batter in Tuffy Gosewisch. Brown induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Brown would face one over the minimum over the final three innings of the game. In the ninth, Spidale led off and grounded out to Pounds for the first out. Harold Garcia singled for his second hit of the game. With a man on, Timo Perez flew out to left. With two down, left fielder Brandon Jones made a game-ending diving catch off the bat of Tagg Bozied, preserving the shutout and the win.

Brown (10-7) becomes Erie's first 10-game winner since Josh Rainwater in 2008. He went the distance allowing six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. It was Brown's second complete game shutout and with four complete games, he is now tied with Seth Etherton (1999) and Randy Leek (2001) for third all-time in SeaWolves history. The all-time leader in complete games for Erie was Brian Cooper who threw six in 1999.

Akron struck in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Anthony Shawler when Lonnie Chisenhall connected on a two-out, solo home run, his 17th for a 1-0 Akron lead.

In the third, Jason Kipnis singled with two outs and moved into scoring position on a Chisenhall base hit. Jerad head grounded to third and an errant throw by Bryan Pounds allowed Kipnis to score for a 2-0 Akron advantage.

Akron would go ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Miguel Perez led off with a single and he came home to score on a two-run home run by John Drennen, his ninth.

Another two-run home run would put the SeaWolves down 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Beau Mills led off with a double and with two outs, Tim Fedroff connected on a tw-run home run to right.

The Aeros would put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Henry and Kipnis hit back-to-back singles off of reliever Erik Crichton. With one out, Head singled home Henry for a 7-0 lead. A walk to Mills loaded the bases for Perez. Perez singled home Kipnis and on a throwing error by left fielder Matt Mansilla, Head scored for a 9-0 Akron edge. Drennen followed with a two-run double making it 11-0. Drennen would later score on an error for a 12-0 Akron lead.

Erie mustered just four hits in the game. Rawley Bishop, Alden Carrithers and Brandon Douglas all had base hits while Bryan Pounds had a double.
