Kibler Sharp But 'Wolves Fall In Opener
04/08/2010 9:35 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves fell on Opening Day in Trenton, 4-0, despite a solid starting pitching performance by lefty Jon Kibler.

Kibler began the game retiring the first eight Thunder hitters before yielding an infield single off the bat of the nine-hitter Luis Nunez. Leadoff hitter Austin Krum followed with an RBI double to the gap in right-center for a 1-0 Trenton lead.

After two consecutive scoreless innings, Kibler came out to work in the sixth. Krum led off and reached on an error by second baseman Justin Henry. The 'Wolves would go to the bullpen bringing in righty Luis Marte. Marte surrendered back-to-back singles to David Adams and Austin Romine bringing Krum home to score for a 2-0 Trenton advantage. A Brandon Laird single would load the bases and Marte would give way to the second reliever of the inning, Brendan Wise. Wise induced a fielder's choice off the bat of Damon Sublett for the first out of the inning but surrendered a bases loaded walk to Reid Gorecki to make it 3-0. A second bases loaded walk to Daniel Brewer with two outs would give Trenton a 4-0 advantage.

Erie would never recover from the 4-0 deficit as the Thunder bullpen worked 3.1 scoreless innings. Trenton started Christian Garcia (1-0) went 5.2 innings allowing two hits with a walk and three strikeouts before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury.

The Trenton pitching staff limited the 'Wolves to just two base hits in the game, one by Andy Dirks and one by Wilkin Ramirez.

Kibler (0-1) worked five-plus solid innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

The SeaWolves and Thunder resume their four-game opening weekend series on Friday night at Waterfront Park...7:05 first pitch. RHP L.J. Gagnier will take the mound for the 'Wolves making his first start of the season.

Gagnier Strong, But Erie Falls 3-1
04/09/2010 9:55 PM ET

Recap Box

Despite a strong starting pitching performance for the second consecutive night, the SeaWolves could not take advantage, falling to the Trenton Thunder, 3-1 on Friday night at Waterfront Park.

The SeaWolves struck first against Trenton starter Ryan Pope in the top of the fourth inning. Cale Iorg led off with a single to center for his first hit of the season. With one out, Michael Bertram singled to left for his first hit of the '10 campaign putting two on base for Cesar Nicolas. Nicolas would drive in the Howlers first run of the year with an RBI base knock to left for the 1-0 lead.

SeaWolves starter L.J. Gagnier was sharp as he tossed five shutout innings in taking a no-decision in his first outing of the season. In the first, second and fifth innings he worked out of having a runner in scoring position with less than two outs, keeping the Thunder at bay. He would finish the night with no walks and five strikeouts.

Trenton would strike back against Erie reliever Zach Simons in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, David Adams and Austin Romine connected on back-to-back singles bringing Brandon Laird to the plate. Laird, the brother of Tigers catcher Gerald Laird, connected on a two-run triple to the gap in right-center, giving Trenton a 2-1 advantage.

In the seventh, reliever Jay Voss, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, gave up a leadoff double to Luis Nunez and an infield single to Austin Krum. With two on, Adams chopped a ball to Nicolas at third who turned an unconventional 5-6-3 double play. Erie would then bring in Luis Marte to face Romine. Romine sent a blooper to right that went off the glove of right fielder Josh Burrus. The error allowed Krum to score from second for a 3-1 Trenton lead.

In the ninth, Wilkin Ramirez led off with a single and Nicolas dropped in a single to right with one out putting the tying runs on base. Reliever Grant Duff followed with back-to-back strikeouts of Deik Scram and Burrus to end the game.

Simons (0-1) took the loss for the 'Wolves.

Erie and Trenton continue their four-game series on Saturday afternoon at Waterfront Park...5:05 first pitch. Lefty Duane Below takes the mound for Erie as the 'Wolves look for their first win of the season.

'Wolves Fall to Trenton 4-1
04/10/2010 7:56 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves have dropped to 0-3 following a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Trenton Thunder on Saturday afternoon at Waterfront Park.

The game marked the return of starting pitcher Duane Below, who made his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring.

Below was sharp early allowing one hit and striking out five in the first two innings. In the third however, the Thunder bats came alive. With one out, Luis Nunez double and was doubled home by Austin Krum for a 1-0 Trenton lead. David Adams followed with a two-run home run to left-center for a 3-0 Trenton advantage.

Below (0-1) would finish his day working a scoreless fourth inning finishing the day allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Trenton added a run against Erie reliever Ryan Ketchner in the bottom of the seventh. Nunez doubled with one out and was doubled home by Adams with two outs for a 4-0 lead.

Erie would finally get on the board in the top of the eighth against reliever Josh Schmidt. With one out, Jeff Kunkel tripled into the left field corner. For Kunkel, it was his first three-bagger since the 2007 season with West Michigan. Shawn Roof grounded out to short, scoring Kunkel, making it 4-1. Erie would get no closer.

The SeaWolves have now scored just two runs on 11 hits in the first three games. The loss gives the 'Wolves their first 0-3 start since 2006.

Erie looks to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon against the Thunder...1:05 First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber takes the mound for the 'Wolves making his first start of the season.

'Wolves Swept By Trenton
04/11/2010 11:40 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves offense struggled again on Sunday en route to a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Trenton Thunder. The loss drops Erie to 0-4 on the season.

Trenton struck first in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Thad Weber. Austin Krum led off with a walk and he would eventually score on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Thunder lead.

Erie tied the game in the top of the fourth against Trenton starter David Phelps. Andy Dirks led off with a double to the wall in center for his first extra-base hit of the season. Dirks moved to third on a Justin Henry groundout and scored on a Wilkin Ramirez groundout.

Trenton quickly regained the lead in the next half inning. David Adams and Brandon Laird connected on back-to-back singles to start the inning. A wild pitch moved the baserunners into scoring position for Reid Gorecki. Gorecki grounded out, scoring Adams for a 2-1 Trenton lead.

It would remain a one-run game until the bottom of the eighth when Trenton put the game out of reach. Justin Snyder singled off of reliever Jay Voss and Luis Nunez reached on a hit-by-pitch. Voss retired Krum and gave way to Zach Simons. Adams double home both baserunners to make it 4-1. Trenton would add one more run to make it 5-1.

The SeaWolves will look for their first win of the season on Monday night at Binghamton...6:35 First Pitch. Lefty Andy Oliver makes his professional debut for the 'Wolves.

Erie Drops Opener to B-Mets
04/12/2010 9:41 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves struggles continued on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium as they fell to the Binghamton Mets, 7-4, dropping their record to 0-5.

Lefty Andy Oliver made his professional debut for the SeaWolves but ran into trouble in the bottom of the first inning against the powerful B-Mets lineup. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off with a walk and with one out, Nick Evans connected on his first home run of the season over the wall in right. The two-run shot gave the Mets a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Zach Lutz walked and was doubled home by Marshall Hubbard for a 3-0 lead.

Binghamton added to the lead in the bottom of the second. Carlos Guzman led off the inning with a walk and moved over to second on a Luis Hernandez single. With one out, Jonathan Malo grounded to short but on an overthrow of second by Cale Iorg, Guzman scored to make it 4-0.

In the third, the B-Mets made it 5-0 as Lutz sent a solo home run over the wall in left, his first of the season.

The SeaWolves would get on the board in the top of the fourth against Binghamton starter Eddie Kunz. With one out, Michael Bertram walked. Cesar Nicolas followed with a ground ball to short and on an error by Malo on a botched double play, both runners would reach safely. Deik Scram stepped in and blasted his first home run of the season. The three-run shot made it a 5-3 game.

In the fourth, Binghamton would make it a three-run game once again. Hernandez walked with one out and advanced to second on a groundout by Nieuwenhuis. Malo singled home Hernandez to make it 6-3.

Erie responded in the bottom of the inning as Santo De Leon connected on his first home run of the season, making it a 6-4 game. Erie, however, would get no closer.

The Mets added a run to make it 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Evans connected on his second home run of the game off of reliever Zach Simons.

Binghamton pitchers combined to 15 of the final 16 Erie batters securing the win.

Oliver (0-1) went 3.2 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The SeaWolves continue their three-game series with the Mets on Tuesday night...6:35 first pitch. Lefty Jon Kibler (0-1, 1.80 ERA) takes the mound for the Howlers making his second start of the season.

Kibler Strong Again But Erie Falls
04/13/2010 9:51 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves offensive woes continued on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium as they were shut out by the Binghamton Mets, 2-0. The loss drops the Howlers to 0-6 on the season.

Erie lefty Jon Kibler put together another solid performance in a losing effort. Kibler started the game with four shutout innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Jose Coronado doubled with one out and came home to score on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis base hit for a 1-0 Binghamton lead. Kibler would then get out of a bases loaded jam after walking two with two outs to keep it a one-run game.

Kibler would come out to work the sixth and shut down the side in order with a pair of strikeouts ending his day going six strong, allowing a run on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Binghamton would add a run in the eighth against the Erie bullpen. Lefty Jay Voss began the inning facing Coronado. Coronado sent a fly ball to center that went off the glove of Wilkin Ramirez. Following the error, Coronado would steal second. Voss struck out Nieuwenhuis for the first out of the inning. Erie would turn to the bullpen again bringing in Luis Marte. Marte induced a fly ball off the bat of Luis Hernandez for the second out. After walking Nick Evans, Lucas Duda doubled home Coronado for a 2-0 lead.

While the Binghamton starter Eric Niesen struggled going 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, one hit batter and five walks but the 'Wolves could not take advantage. The Mets bullpen worked the final 4.1 innings of the game allowing just two baserunners. John Lujan picked up his first save working a perfect 1.1 innings.

The 'Wolves were limited to just three hits for the second straight night and the club stranded 10 on base, four in scoring position.

Kibler (0-2) has allowed just two earned runs over his first 11.0 innings pitched but has been on the wrong end of two shutouts.

The 0-6 start continues what is the worst start in club history.

Erie will again look for its first win on Wednesday night in the final game of the road trip in Binghamton...6:35 First Pitch. Righty L.J. Gagnier, who tossed five shutout innings in his first start, takes the mound for the 'Wolves.

SeaWolves Fall in Home Opener to Altoona
04/16/2010 12:38 AM ET

Recap Box

The second-best Opening Day crowd in Erie SeaWolves history watched the 'Wolves fall, 13-5, to the Altoona Curve.

Altoona struck first in the top in the top of the first inning when Hector Gimenez doubled home a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead.

The 'Wolves responded in the bottom of the first as Andy Dirks connected on his first home of the season, a solo home run off of Curve starter Tim Alderson, making it a 2-1 game.

Altoona struck for three to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the third when Miles Durham homered to left-center, scoring Jim Negrych and Jordy Mercer. The Curve added to the lead in the top of the fourth when Matt Hague homered to left, his first, to make it 6-1.

The SeaWolves then roared back in the fifth. With one out, Justin Henry laid down a bunt and beat it out for a base hit. Max St. Pierre walked to put a pair on base. After a Dirks flyout, Wilkin Ramirez stepped to the plate and ended a four-game hitless streak as he homered off the top of the batters eye in center. The home run for Ramirez was his first of the season and it made it a 6-4 game.

The 'Wolves then made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh. St. Pierre singled with one out and was tripled home by Dirks, making it 6-5. That would be as close as the Howlers would get.

Altoona struck for seven in the top of the ninth against the Erie bullpen to take a 13-5 lead.

Erie's starter Duane Below did not make it passed the first inning, allowing two runs. He took the loss, dropping his record to 0-2.

St. Pierre Blasts Away Losing Streak!
By Nick Underhill
04/17/2010 4:59 PM ET

Recap Box

Max St. Pierre can't bunt, but he sure can hit.

Celebrating his 30th birthday, the 14-year minor league veteran hit a pair of home runs, including a walk-off, to lead the Erie SeaWolves to their first win of the 2010 season, a 6-5 victory over the Altoona Curve before 1,034 fans at Jerry Uht Park.

After Cale Iorg worked a walk off Altoona reliever Ronald Uviedo to start the bottom of the ninth, St. Pierre twice attempted to bunt him over to second, but both times the ball rolled foul. Down 0-2, St. Pierre launched a change-up over the left field wall to give Erie its first win.

"I'll be working on bunting tomorrow for sure," St. Pierre said. "This doesn't happen a lot, I got lucky I got a good pitch."

Erie entered game marred in a franchise worst 0-8 start.

"It feels great," manager Phil Nevin said. "From day one these guys have battled every single day. I'll go to war with these guys."

Erie cruised early behind a strong performance from starter Thad Weber. In his first appearance back in Erie since throwing a no-hitter against the Akron Aeros on August 22, Weber threw six innings, while allowing one run on one hit. He walked and struck out three.

"I wouldn't say it was anywhere close to where I need to be, but it was good enough," Weber said. "The end was scary, but it was a huge win for us."

But late inning dramatics from both clubs would leave him with a no-decision.

After Erie reliever Ryan Ketchner gave up a pair of runs in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3, Erie fought back to reclaim the lead.

Deik Scram led the inning off with a triple down the right field line that curved into the Altoona (7-2) bullpen, and was then brought home on a broken bat single by Josh Burrus that flared over the shortstops head into shallow leftfield.

Burrus, who was signed over during the offseason after Atlanta cut him, entered the at-bat hitless in 14 previous attempts.

"I was putting pressure on myself being the new guy coming in," Burrus said. "Hits are contagious, it feels good to get that first one."

Weber was able to keep Altoona out of the hits column through the first four innings, before Matt Hague led off the fifth with a line drive down the leftfield line that became lodged under the fence.

Weber nearly escaped the inning on a ball hit by Jose De Los Santos, but the double play attempt failed when the throw to first base by Cale Iorg pulled Michael Bertram off the bag, allowing Hague to score.

"That's when you learn who you are is when you don't really have your best stuff," Weber said. "I have a lot more confidence moving forward after this one."

His stellar outing went to dust after Ryan Ketchner gave up a two-run home run to Jim Negrych in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3 and stick Weber with the no-decision.

Erie broke the game open in the third inning. St. Pierre and Shawn Roof started the rally by leading off with a pair of singles. The thid batter, Andy Dirks, then brought St. Pierre home on another single. Roof scored on a fielder's choice by Wilkin Ramirez.

"Someone is going to have to do something for Max after this one," Weber said. "Two-homers -- We have to do something."

Erie plays Altoona tomorrow at 1:05. Andy Oliver (0-1, 12.27 ERA) will take the mound for the SeaWolves, with Justin Wilson (1-0, 1.80 ERA) throwing for the Curve.

Kibler...'Wolves Down Bowie In Series Opener
By Nick Underhill
04/19/2010 10:34 PM ET

Recap Box

Don't look now, but the SeaWolves are on a winning streak.

One night after manufacturing their runs by playing small ball, the SeaWolves (3-8) decided to extend their batting practice into regulation by hitting three home runs to fuel them to their third straight victory, a 5-3 win over the Bowie Baysox before 2,438 fans at Jerry Uht Park.

"We'll do it anyway we can," manager Phil Nevin said. "Obviouly in this ball park if you get a hold of it and it will get out. We got into a couple early today."

Wilkin Ramirez led the charge with a homer in the first inning, followed by two more in the third inning by Andy Dirks and Deik Scram.

"If you score a run in the first inning the team is going to try and get together and keep it going," Ramirez said. "We already had one run on the board and everybody started to do the same thing."

As important as that initial run was, the shot of the day came from Scram. After Ramirez laced a single up the middle, Scram came to the plate and blasted Baysox pitcher Steven Johnson's first offering over Holland Street and onto the roof of the Erie Civic Center's storage building that sits beyond the right field wall.

"He threw me a fastball and I was able to capitalize on it," Scram said. "If we continue to swing the bats good things are going to happen. Now that we are here, at home, with these great crowds behind us - we feed off them."

Tuesday's game also saw Jon Kibler's third consecutive quality start. The left handed pitcher threw seven innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while walking one and striking out four.

Kibler started out strong, getting through the first four innings on 45 pitches while facing just one batter above the minimum, but struggled through the fifth and sixth inning.

"I felt great in the beginning. I was getting a lot of ground balls and throwing a lot of strikes. In the middle there I stiffened up and couldn't find the zone, which led to me getting into deeper counts and getting hit around a little bit," Kibler said.

The Baysox were able to take advantage of him in the fifth inning after he began to struggle with his command. Behind a pair of singles by Joel Guzman and Caleb Joseph to lead off the inning, Bowie (9-3) cut into the SeaWolves 5-0 lead by scoring a run on a fielding error by Cale Iorg and a sacrifice double play that ended the inning.

They added a third run on a Miguel Abreu homer that led off the sixth.

Kibler, who is now 1-2 with a 2.00 ERA, was aided by a pair of spectacular defensive plays from Iorg and 2B Justin Henry.

Iorg reminded everyone why is considered one of the best defensive talents in the minor league's when he made a diving catch on a ball that was hit behind second base and into shallow centerfield in the third inning one play after recording a throwing error.

"That was unbelievable. I never thought that he was going to make that catch, there was no way," Ramirez said.

Then, not to be outdone, Henry fielded a ball hit into the hole behind second base and flipped it behind his back to Iorg at second to record the third out in the seventh inning.

"That was a great play. That was a much needed play because there would have been a guy on first and second. That was just incredible," Kibler said.

Notes: Nevin announced after the game that Audy Ciriaco (wrist) was activated from the disabled list and will be in the lineup tomorrow and play third base against Bowie. Santo De Leon was tendered his outright released to make room on the roster for Ciriaco.

De Leon, 26, was hitting .207 with a home run prior to be being released.

"It's the first time I've had to do that. Santo's been a great part of this organization for a long time," Nevin said.

Gagnier, Ciriaco Shine in 'Wolves Win
By Nick Underhill
04/20/2010 11:09 PM ET

Recap Box

It was a long and perfect day for Audy Ciriaco.

In his first game with the Erie SeaWovles after starting the season on the disabled list with a wrist injury, the recently converted third baseman went 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases to lead the Erie SeaWolves to a 7-2 victory over the Bowie Baysox.

"I saw him for five or six days in spring training and he impressed me everyday there, as well as tonight," SeaWolves manager Phil Nevin said.

Ciriaco's day started at 4:30 a.m. when he caught a flight from the Tigers Player Development Complex in Lakeland, Fla., and his travels ended when he landed in Erie at 2 p.m.

"It was a long day today," Ciriaco said. "With packing stuff and saying bye to some of the players, I was only able to sleep about an hour and half last night."

That didn't affect his performance, though.

Ciriaco singled in the first and then stole second, eventually scoring when Cale Iorg hit into a double play. He walked in the third, and again singled and stole a base in the fifth. He grounded out to short in his final two at-bats.

"The guys were telling me to relax and not to try to do too much and to just make contact," Ciriaco said. "That's what I did and I got a couple hits."

Ciriaco, who was converted from shortstop to third during spring training, had one defensive chance in the contest, throwing out Joel Guzman at first to end the game.

Last season with Lakeland he hit .262/.296/.397 with 11 home runs. He also played seven games with Toledo, where he hit .160/.192/.352.

L.J. Gagnier continued a string of stellar outings by the SeaWolves starting pitchers by striking out seven batters over 7 2/3 innings while walking one and allowing two runs.

"It just shows what you can do when you throw a lot of strikes and get ahead of hitters," Nevin said. "He has great movement on his fastball and when they make contact they don't hit it very hard."

All of Gagnier's strikeouts came among the first 12 batters he faced, including three in the fourth inning.

"I just wanted to jump ahead and throw a lot of strikes," Gagnier, who threw 101 pitches, said. "I knew I was on a pitch count, so I knew if I struck out too many guys I wouldn't last as long in the game. So later on I started trying to pitch to contact and rely on the defense."

Bowie (8-4) finally solved him in the sixth when Paco Figueroa hit a two-run homer after Gagneir issued his lone walk of the contest to Pedro Florimon.

Gagnier is now 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He has recorded 15 strikeouts over 18 1/3 innings.

Erie once again reeked havoc on the base paths and worked counts to get to get their runs. The SeaWolves stole six bases and collected seven walks and a hit-by-pitch Tuesday night.

"We're just getting good at-bats," Nevin said. "When we get those opportunities we are going to take them. It makes my job a lot easier when I don't have to tell them when to go."

This brand of baseball was on full display in the fourth inning. After Iorg reached first base on an error, he stole second and was bunted to third by Justin Henry. He finally scored on sacrifice fly by Andy Dirks.

Then in eighth, after a pair of walks and a double loaded the bases, they picked up a few insurance runs on a single by Wilkin Ramirez and a sacrifice fly to left field by Deik Scram. Another walk and a wildpitch by Wilfredo Perez gave Erie a 7-2 lead.

"This offense is going to score a lot of runs this year," Gagnier said.

Erie closes out its home stand against Bowie tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. Duane Below (0-2, 9.64 ERA) will take the hill for the SeaWolves, with Ryohei Tanaka (1-0, 1.50 ERA) throwing for the Baysox.

Ciriaco Homers But Win Streak Ends
By Nick Underhill
04/21/2010 4:38 PM ET

Recap Box

They can't win them all.

The Erie SeaWolves saw their four game winning streak come to a close with a 5-3 loss against Bowie Wednesday at Jerry Uht Park before 1,019 fans.

The SeaWolves (4-9) fell behind early as Duane Below struggled through his second consecutive start as he continues to attempt to return from Tommy John Surgery.

The left handed pitcher lasted just three innings while giving up six hits and four runs. He struck out and walked two hitters each.

"He's trying to figure out his arm - he has a new arm," manager Phil Nevin said. "I'm not worried about Duane, I watch him throw in the pen, I watched him throw in spring training. He has a heck of an arm, it's just location."

Below gave a run in the first inning, but his struggles began in the second inning after Ryan Adams hit a comebacker that hit in his left hand. He struggled through the rest of the order, needing 30 pitches to record three outs.

"I'm not sure if it was that ball, but his velocity dropped a little bit after that," Nevin said.

In the third inning, the game got out of hand after Below surrendered back-to-back home runs to Brandon Waring and Joel Guzman on three pitches to put Bowie ahead 4-1.

"He didn't have his best stuff obviously," catcher Jeff Kunkel said. "You expect him to have more. He's obviously a better pitcher than he was today."

In his last outing, Below, who is just 10 months removed from Tommy John surgery, lasted only 2/3 of an inning after giving up two runs. He is now 0-3 with a 10.57 ERA.

"He was awesome in spring training," Kunkel said. "This time he left some balls up and missed his spots. Just some small adjustments and he'll be fine."

Bowie starter Ryohei Tanaka stifled the SeaWolves bats in the early going of the game, facing just two batters above the minimum through the first four innings.

In the fifth, they began to chip away at Bowie's lead when Audy Ciriaco led off the inning with a home run that landed just beyond the left field wall to pull Erie within two at 4-2.

"I'm just trying to do my best and hit the ball hard," Ciriaco said.

They added another run in the seventh, but couldn't find enough offense to overcome to deficit.

Even though their home stand ended with a loss, Nevin is encouraged with the progress that the team has made thus far.

"We preach winning series and we had a heck of a home stand," Nevin said. "I'll take four out of six. You throw out those first eight games, there's no looking at the standings and records yet. Just keep winning series and look up in mid-May and we'll see where we are at."

Road Woes Continue In Altoona
04/22/2010 9:50 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves dropped their second consecutive ballgame on Thursday night, 3-2, to the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark.

The Howlers struck first in the top of the second inning against Altoona starter Rudy Owens. Audy Ciriaco led off with a base hit to right. He moved to second on a walk by Max St. Pierre. A sacrifice bunt by Cale Iorg moved the runners into scoring position for Shawn Roof. Roof sent a bouncer deep in the hole at third, bringing home Ciriaco for a 1-0 lead.

Altoona tied the game against Erie starter Thad Weber in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Jordy Mercer connected on a solo home run to left, his first, for a 1-1 tie.

The Curve would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Gorkys Hernandez led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase d'Arnaud. With two outs, Mercer came up big again as he doubled down the left field line, scoring Hernandez for a 2-1 lead.

Altoona then went up 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth. Mercer led off with a triple and came home on a single by Matt Hague.

The SeaWolves threatened in the ninth inning but could not complete a comeback against Daniel Moskos. Josh Burrus led off and doubled down the left field line. Ciriaco then singled to center, scoring Burrus, making it a 3-2 game. St. Pierre laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Ciriaco to second but a groundout by Iorg and a strikeout by Roof ended the game.

Weber (0-2) took the loss going six innings allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and a season-high five strikeouts.

The loss for Erie is the clubs eighth straight road loss of the season and 13th consecutive road loss dating back to 2009. Erie's last road win came in a doubleheader sweep of Harrisburg, September 2, 2009.

The SeaWolves and Curve will meet in the second game of the four-game series on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark...6:30 First Pitch. Lefty Andy Oliver takes the mound for the 'Wovles against left Justin Wilson.

Scram Homer Ends Road Losing Skid
04/23/2010 10:06 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves snapped a season-long road losing streak in Altoona on Friday night with a 6-4 win over the Curve at Blair County Ballpark.

Altoona struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Andy Oliver. Gorkys Hernandez walked with one out and stole second. Jim Negrych then singled home Hernandez for a 1-0 Curve lead.

The SeaWolves struck right back in the top of the second against Altoona starter Justin Wilson. Cesar Nicolas, Josh Burrus and Audy Ciriaco each drew walks to load the bases. With one out, Cale Iorg connected on an opposite-field single to right plating Nicolas and Burrus for a 2-1 Erie lead. Shawn Roof then grounded home Ciriaco to make it 3-1.

The Howlers added to the lead in the third. With two outs, Nicolas and Burrus both walked to put a pair on for Ciriaco. Ciriaco doubled down the left field line, plating Nicolas to make it 4-1.

Altoona would tie the game against Oliver in the bottom of the fifth. Wit one out, Hector Gimenez, Jose De Los Santos and Chase d'Arnaud each single to load the bases. Oliver struck out Hernandez for the second out but yielded a bases clearing double to Negrych, tying the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning. Altoona went to Jeff Seus who had not given up a run in 2010. Roof started the inning extending his hitting streak to five straight with a base knock to center. Andy Dirks followed and hit into what looked to be a 4-6-3 double play. Altoona retired Roof at second, but on the relay to first, d'Arnaud fired an errant throw into the dugout allowing Dirks to safely get to second. Dirks would advance to third on a flyout by Wilkin Ramirez to right. Then Deik Scram stepped to the plate with the change to be a hero. Scram worked the count even at 2-2 before belted an opposite-field, two run home run to make it 6-4. The home run for Scram was his third.

Luis Marte came into the game in the ninth and shut down Altoona in order to record his second save in as many chances.

Brooks Brown picked up the win for the 'Wolves going three scoreless innings in relief of Oliver. Brown retired the first eight he faced before giving up a pair of singles in the eighth. He struck out Miles Durham to end the Altoona threat.

The win not only snapped an eight game road losing streak this season, but it snapped a 13-game road losing streak dating back to last September.

St. Pierre Blast Leads Erie To Victory
04/24/2010 9:07 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves used a late home run for the second straight night to take down the Altoona Curve, 4-3, at Blair County Ballpark on Saturday night.

The SeaWolves struck first against Altoona starter Mike Crotta in the top of the third. Max St. Pierre led off with a walk and moved over to third base on a single to right off the bat of Cale Iorg. With one out, Josh Burrus grounded home St. Pierre for a 1-0 lead.

Erie starter Jon Kibler held Curve hitters at bay until the bottom of the fourth inning when Matt Hague connected on a solo home run to left, his second, tying the game at 1-1.

Altoona would take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Alex Presley and Jose De Los Santos each singled. Kibler then hit Gorkys Hernandez, loading the bases for Jim Negrych. Negrych, who had four RBI on Friday night, singed home Presley and De Los Santos for a 3-1 Curve lead.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh. Altoona turned it over to the bullpen bringing in reliever Dustin Molleken. Cesar Nicolas led off with a single bringing the tying run to the plate in Audy Ciriaco. Ciriaco grounded to short and Altoona got the force at second eliminating the lead runner. Ciriaco then stole second, his third steal, and Michael Bertram walked to put the tying runs on base for St. Pierre. St. Pierre slammed a three-run home run, his third, over the bleachers in left field to make it a 4-3 game in favor of the 'Wolves. All three of St. Pierre's home runs have come against Altoona.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kibler retired the first two hitters before walking Negrych and Jordy Mercer. Kibler gave way to Ryan Ketchner who retired Hague for the final out of the inning.

Ketchner worked perfect eight and ninth innings preserving the Erie win, picking up his first save of the season.

Kibler (2-2) has now won back-to-back starts. He went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kibler has now worked at least six innings in three consecutive starts.

Erie looks for the series win on Sunday afternoon against the Curve...2:00 First Pitch. Righty L.J. Gagnier (1-0, 1.96 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against righty Jared Hughes (3-0, 1.72 ERA).

'Wolves Explode For 10...Take Series Over Curve
04/25/2010 5:08 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves offense exploded on Sunday afternoon, scoring a season-high 10 runs, in a 10-3 drubbing of the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark.

Erie struck first against Altoona starter Jared Hughes in the top of the second. Cesar Nicolas led off drawing a walk and Audy Ciriaco doubled to put runners on second and third. With one out, Max St. Pierre grounded out, scoring Nicolas for a 1-0 lead. Cale Iorg followed with a two-out single to right, plating Ciriaco for a 2-0 lead.

The 'Wolves then blew open the game in the top of the third. Justin Henry led off with a single, Josh Burrus was hit by a pitch and Wilkin Ramirez reached on an infield single to load the bases. Andy Dirks grounded out to first, scoring Henry for a 3-0 lead. Nicolas followed and laced a double to the wall in center, scoring Burrus and Ramirez for a 5-0 lead. Ciriaco reached on a fielder's choice with Nicolas being retired at third for the second out. Michael Bertram singled to left putting two on for St. Pierre. St. Pierre answered the call once again as he singled home Ciriaco and Bertram for a 7-0 lead. Iorg then doubled to the wall in right, scoring St. Pierre for an 8-0 lead.

Altoona got on the board in the bottom of the third against Erie starter L.J. Gagnier. Matt Hague started the inning with a walk. Jordy Mercer followed with a ground ball to Ciriaco. Ciriaco misplayed the ball and threw the ball into right allowing both runners to reach safely. Kris Watts single home Hague to make it 8-1 and on an error by Ramirez in center, brought home Mercer to make it 8-2. Both runs were unearned against Gagnier who followed the single by retiring the side in order.

In the fourth, Ramirez stepped in with one out and put the 'Wolves ahead 9-2 after he crushed his third home run of the season over the bleachers in left.

Erie scored its 10th run in the top of the sixth when Burrus slammed his first home run of the season.

Altoona would plate one in the ninth but get no closer as the 'Wolves held on for a 10-3 win.

Gagnier (2-0) has won back-to-back starts. He worked five innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The road series win was the first for the SeaWolves since taking two of three in Binghamton July 4-6 last season.

The Howlers have the day off on Monday and will get back to action on Tuesday night in Bowie.

Below K's 10 as 'Wolves Win Fourth Straight
04/27/2010 10:22 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves opened up a three-game series against the Bowie Baysox on Tuesday night with a 7-2 win at Prince George's Stadium. The win was the 'Wolves fourth straight.

Erie struck first in the top of the second inning against Royhei Tanaka with one out as Michael Bertram slammed his first home run of the season over the wall in right for a 1-0 lead.

Erie would go ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth. Audy Ciriaco singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Bertram. With runners on the corners, Max St. Pierre hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Ciriaco.

The Baysox tied the game against Erie starter Duane Below in the bottom of the fourth. Below had not allowed a hit through the first three innings, striking out seven of the first 10 hitters he faced. With one out, Tyler Hensen walked and Brandon Waring singled putting two on for Joel Guzman. Guzman hit into a fielder's choice and Hensen came home to score on an error to make it 2-1. With two outs, Caleb Josheph doubled home Guzman, tying the game at 2-2.

Below battled right back in the bottom of the fifth striking out two of the final three he faced.

Erie regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Cesar Nicolas sent a laser over the wall in left for his first home run of the season, giving the Howlers a 3-2 lead.

The 'Wolves then broke the game open in the top of the seventh. With one out, Shawn Roof and Josh Burrus drew back-to-back walks, knocking Tanaka out of the game. In came Eddie Gamboa who immediately gave up an RBI double to Ramirez down the left field line to make it a 4-2 game. The Baysox intentionally walked Andy Dirks bringing Nicolas to the plate. Nicolas singed up the middle, scoring Burrus and Ramirez to make it 6-2. Ciriaco finished the inning with a single to right-center, scoring Dirks for a 7-2 lead.

The Erie bullpen, Zach Simons for three and Luis Marte for one, shut down the Baysox over the final four innings of the game allowing just one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.

Below (1-3) picked up his first win since his last start of 2009 (May 24). He went five innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits with three walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts. The 10 K's is the most by an Erie pitcher in a game this season.

It's the SeaWolves second four-game winning streak of the season and the first four-game winning streak on the road in two seasons.

The 'Wolves will go for a season-high five straight wins on Wednesday night at Bowie...7:05 First Pitch. RHP Thad Weber (0-2, 2.12 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Tim Bascom (2-0, 1.00 ERA)

'Wolves Batter Baysox 9-7
04/28/2010 10:27 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves slugged their way to their fifth consecutive win on Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium, 9-7, against the Bowie Baysox.

The Howlers struck first against Bowie starter Tim Bascom in the top of the first inning. With one out, Wilkin Ramirez cracked his fourth double of the season. Andy Dirks then stepped in and took Bascom yard over the wall in right for a 2-0 lead. Bascom had allowed just two runs over his first three starts.

The 'Wolves added to the lead in the top of the second, Michael Bertram led off and extended his hitting streak to four straight games with a double down the right field line. Max St. Pierre sacrificed Bertram over to third and Cale Iorg sent a single up the middle to score the run to make it 3-0. Iorg has now hit safely in five straight.

In the third, Dirks led off with his second hit of the came. Consecutive singles by Cesar Nicolas and Audy Ciraco brought Dirks home for a 4-0 lead.

Bowie struck back against Erie starter Thad Weber in the bottom of the fourth. Robbie Widlansky led off with a double and moved to third on a two-out single by Danny Figueroa. Pedro Florimon singled then single to right, scoring Widlansky to make it a 4-1 game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Adams led off with a single and was tripled home by Tyler Hensen, cutting the Erie lead in half a 4-2. Brandon Waring followed with an RBI single, scoring Hensen to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

In the top of the sixth, Betram reached on a walk with one out. St. Pierre followed and hit was looked to be an inning-ending double play ball to Florimon at short. Florimon booted the ball, allowing both runners to reach safely. Iorg followed with a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Josh Burrus crushed a bases-clearing double down the left field line for a 7-3 Erie lead. Ramirez then followed and crushed his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall for a 9-3 lead.

Bowie would respond with three in the bottom of the sixth, all with two outs against reliever Brooks Brown to make it 9-6.

Jared Gayhart then entered and held the Baysox scoreless until two outs in the ninth when Miguel Abreu connected on a solo home run to right, making it a 9-7 game. Gayhart then induced a pop out off the bat of Danny Figueroa to end the game, picking up his first save.

Weber (1-2) earned his first win of the season going five innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits with a walk and five strikeouts. He was the last of the five Erie starters to pick up a victory.

The five-game winning streak is the longest for Erie this season and the longest road winning streak for Erie since the club won five straight August 20-24 during the 2008 season.

The 'Wolves will go for six straight and a series sweep on Thursday morning...11:05 AM First Pitch. Lefty Andy Oliver (1-1, 6.14 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against lefty Zach Britton (1-1, 5.03 ERA).

'Wolves Sweep Baysox...Win Sixth Straight
04/29/2010 2:19 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves completed a three-game sweep of the Bowie Baysox on Thursday afternoon with a 4-3 win at Prince George's Stadium. The Howlers have now won a season-high six straight games.

The 'Wolves would add to their lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Bowie's Zach Britton hit Jeff Kunkel to put a man on. With two outs, back-to-back walks by White and Ramirez loaded the bases for Josh Burrus. Burrus grounded to the shortstop Pedro Florimon who booted the ball, allowing everyone to reach safely, scoring Kunkel for a 2-0 lead. Cesar Nicolas then extended his hitting streak to five straight games lining a two-run single to left-center for a 4-0 lead.

Bowie struck back for a run in the bottom of the fifth against Erie starter Andy Oliver. Phil Britton walked and Florimon doubled putting runners in scoring position. Oliver then struck out the next two hitters before yielding a single to Tyler Hensen, scoring Britton, making it 4-1.

The Baysox closed the gap to two in the seventh against reliever Brooks Brown. With one out, Paco Figueroa connected on his second triple of the game and came home to score on a Ryan Adams groundout.

In the eighth, Bowie again closed the gap against reliever Brendan Wise. Brandon Waring led off and reached on an Audy Ciriaco error. Joel Guzman then singled and Robbie Widlansky walked to load the bases with no outs. Wise struck out Miguel Abreau for the first out. Britton then grounded out to short but brought home Waring making it a 4-3 game. Wise then walked Florimon before inducing an inning-ending and game saving groundout off the bat of Figueroa.

Luis Marte came into the game in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season. He allowed a one-out single to Hensen but got Waring to fly out to deep center and Guzman to strike out to end the game.

Oliver (2-1) worked five innings for the 'Wolves allowing a run on five hits with four walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts in picking up his second win. The 10 strikeouts equals the season-high by an Erie starter. Duane Below struck out 10 in the series opener.

After starting the season 0-8, the SeaWolves have been the hottest team in the Eastern League winning 10 of their last 12, getting their record back to .500 at 10-10.

The SeaWolves will take their season-long six-game win streak back to Jerry Uht Park on Friday night as the Trenton Thunder come to town for a three-game series...6:35 First Pitch. Lefty Jon Kibler (2-2, 2.55 ERA) goes for his third straight win against RHP Ryan Pope (0-2, 4.87 ERA)

Six Game Win Streak Snapped By Trenton
By Nick Underhill
04/30/2010 11:30 PM ET

Recap Box

The best fielding performance at Jerry Uht Park came between innings when a fan made an amazing one-handed snag on a foul ball hit into the right field seats.

That's more than can be said for the SeaWolves defense during the late innings of Friday's game.

The SeaWolves just didn't play well as they attempted to extend a season long six-game winning streak. The offense exploded early and held a 5-2 lead through five innings behind a solid start from Jon Kibler, but lost focus and gave the game away in the later innings, falling 11-5 to Trenton.

"It was just a bad time of day, we lost some balls. It happens," Nevin said. "We'll go get 'em tomorrow."

The SeaWolves night was perfectly defined by a pair of miscues on back-to-back plays that led to three runs for Trenton in the seventh inning and Erie's undoing.

With two outs, Michael Bertram, Justin Henry and Josh Burrus went in pursuit of a David Adams pop fly that carried into shallow right field. All three stopped short as the ball fell in between them, allowing Trenton to score two runs on the play and take the lead at 6-5.

"It's tough to see the ball in the twilight. I went back on it and Josh lost it out there in the outfield. I looked back and saw that he lost it, and tried to catch up to it again and it fell in there," Henry said. "I started out for it and looked at him and he was standing there like, 'I didn't see it', and I took off again but it dropped in."

Austin Romine then came to the plate and hit a ball softly to right center that Burrus and Wilkin Ramirez went in pursuit of, but both players again stopped short, allowing the ball to fall in as Adams scored from second to give Trenton a 7-5 lead.

"It's one of those rough times in the twilight hour right there. It's unfortunate that it happened at that time with runners in scoring position," Burrus said. "I heard guys saying that it was back over my head and stuff like that, but I couldn't find it.

"It's frustrating. You want to make the play, but I couldn't see those balls and they caught a break right there."

The meltdown continued in the eighth inning as Trenton tacked on four more runs to its lead.

"Little things like that can steamroll an offense," Nevin said. "One mistake defensively -- good offenses capitalize on that. Those kind of things snowball on you."

The poor defense wasn't limited to just the outfield. Erie had three errors charged to the infield, including two by Audy Ciriaco.

Ciriaco, who moved to third base during spring training, extended both the fourth and sixth inning with two out errors, and now leads the Eastern League with seven over 37 chances spanning ten games.

Pedro Florimon of Altoona leads with eight errors over 97 chances.

It wasn't Kibler's best start of the season, but he was effective enough to keep Erie in the game and exit with the lead. The lefty scattered seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, while allowing four runs. He struck out three and walking none.

It marked the first time this season that he had allowed more than three runs in an outing.

Jay Voss came in relief in the sixth inning and was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs, including the three in the seventh inning.

Henry collected both his first RBIs and home run of the season when he hit an 0-1 fastball off Trenton starter Ryan Pope over the left field wall for a three-run home run to give Erie a 4-0 lead.

"It felt good and it's nice to feel good and barrel up some baseballs," Henry said.

Ramirez Blasts Off Against Trenton
By Nick Underhill
05/01/2010 7:29 PM ET

Recap Box

When the SeaWolves start struggling, like they certainly did Thursday against Trenton, they've learned that they can usually turn to their wily veteran, Wilkin Ramirez, to help them bounce out of it.

On Saturday the center fielder went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to help lead the SeaWolves to a decisive 10-3 victory over Trenton at Jerry Uht Park.

Ramirez also singled and scored in the first. He then walked in the second and scored on a Cesar Nicolas single.

"He's just been taking good at bats. He's come here with a good attitude, it has to be difficult going from the big leagues and back to Double-A," Ramirez said.

After five strong minor league seasons, Ramirez, 24, had positioned himself as the top outfield prospect in the Tigers minor league system. But after scuttling through Toledo last year, he fell out of favor with talent evaluators and wound up starting the 2010 season with the Erie SeaWolves.

It would have been easy for him to put his head down and just simply go through the motions or show up with scowl on his face, but has done anything but.

"He's a high energy guy and what he can do at the plate, we try to ride it as much as we can," Cesar Nicolas said. "He's always having fun and enjoying himself, a lot of guys feed off that."

Over his last ten games, Ramirez is hitting .324/.432/.568 with four homers and 10 RBIs.

On an overcast day with strong winds blowing out to center field, Jerry Uht Park had no trouble living up to it's billing as being a hitter friendly park. Both teams combined for four home runs, including one each for Trenton's Austin Romine and Reid Gorecki.

"I think you could see in the first couple innings that it was not going to be a typical day here," Nevin said.

Thanks to a rough outing by highly touted Trenton starter Jeremy Bleich, who struggled with his command all afternoon and was subsequently knocked out of the game after allowing seven runs over 2 2/3 innings, Ramirez was able to get to the plate in each of the first three innings.

With Bleich knocked out of the game after walking Josh Burrus to load the bases, Ramirez welcomed Trenton reliever Eric Wordekemper to the game in the third inning by hitting grand slam over the center field wall to put Erie up 8-2.

"I put a good swing on that ball and hit it hard," Ramirez said.

With Wordekemper still on the mound, Ramirez ended his day by crushing a ball over the screen in center to put the SeaWolves up 10-2.

Bleich entered the game with a 2.38 ERA, the 10th best mark in the Eastern League among pitchers with four or more starts. By the time the SeaWolves were done with him it stood at 4.62.

Upset about surrendering the homer to Ramirez, Wordekemper was ejected after his next pitch, a fastball that ran up and in, hit Andy Dirks in the shoulder.

"I didn't show off after the home run, I ran as fast as I could," Ramirez said. "It was a stupid play for them. So when a guy hits a home run you're going to hit the next one? That's unprofessional."

The fireworks didn't end there for the Thunder. After Jared Gayhart plunked Austin Krum in the forearm in the seventh inning, Trenton manager Tony Franklin had a meltdown and was ejected from the game after arguing with the home plate umpire for several minutes.

"We weren't trying to hit anyone," Nevin said. "We're up by all those runs, why would you hit someone?"

This marked Erie's first win over Trenton in six attempts this season. Trenton took four straight from Erie to start the season.

Two-Out Thunder Downs Trenton In Series Finale
By Nick Underhill
05/02/2010 5:08 PM ET

Recap Box

Cancel the calling hours and flowers; Duane Below is back.

After a rocky start to the 2010 season following elbow surgery last June, Below strung together his second solid start by allowing one run on two hits, striking out four, and walking none to lead Erie to a 4-3 victory over Trenton Sunday.

"The first couple starts were struggles, It's a mind game mostly," Below said. "You have to overcome it, throw strikes and give your team an opportunity to win."

Below cruised through the first six Trenton (10-12) batters, retiring them in order, before surrendering a leadoff home run to Jose Gil, who hit a 1-1 pitch that narrowly scaled the shallow left field wall in the third inning. From there he allowed one hit to next eight batters he faced.

"I had the adrenaline going a little bit, so I made an adjustment and calmed myself down," Below said. "That's the biggest part right now for me is making adjustments."

However, the hero in Sunday's game was once again Max St. Pierre.

The Thunder struck for two runs against Erie (12-11) reliever Ramon Garcia, and held onto the lead until the ninth inning when St. Pierre came to the plate with one man on.

He fouled off the first pitch he saw and then took a strike. Down to his last pitch, he got a fastball down in the zone and took it over the left field wall for his second walk-off homer of the season.

"It barely went out, but it was a big one. I was just trying not to strike out," St. Pierre said.

St. Pierre hit a walk-off homer on his 30th birthday to give Erie its first win of the season April 17 against the Altoona Curve.

In his first three outings Below surrendered nine runs over 7.2 innings, never pitching past the fourth inning, for a 10.53 ERA.

"I wasn't worried about him. I know how hard he's worked to get to this point," manager Phil Nevin said. "He's limited on the pitches he can throw, but the reason I wasn't worried about him is that I watch his side sessions and he's succeeded at this level before."

Something clicked for Below in his last start on the road against Bowie and he has now since has allowed one earned run over 10 innings while striking out 14.

"I slowed things down the last couple starts and tried to explode through the strikezone and find my balance point. That's a big thing and it helps me throw strikes."

Erie has now won five straight series after dropping two to start the season; they are also now about .500 for the first.

"You win series. That's what we talk about in here," Nevin said. "We want to win series. You build momentum and things snowball when you (take series)."

'Wolves Fall to B-Mets in Extras
By Nick Underhill
05/03/2010 10:35 PM ET

Recap Box

Late inning dramatics are becoming an everyday experience at Jerry Uht Park.

For the second night in a row the Erie SeaWolves produced ninth inning magic. Unfortunately, this time they didn't have enough left in the tank to carry it into the tenth inning as they fell to Binghamton in the series opener 7-5.

Down 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the SeaWolves offense manufactured a pair of runs to force extra innings. But their hard work was undone after Brooks Brown walked a batter and surrendered a home run to Mets' designated hitter Marshall Hubbard in the tenth.

"Yes (I think all of our games will be this dramatic), because of the way this team plays," manager Phil Nevin said. "This team always battles. I'm proud of the way we played."

The SeaWolves defeated Trenton with on a walk-off homer by Max St. Pierre on Sunday.

Cale Iorg had his best game of the season going 3-for-4 with a double and Andy Dirks went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Erie starter Thad Weber threw 7 1/3 innings while allowing four earned runs with three strike outs.

The SeaWolves started a furious rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, trailing by two runs.

Iorg started things off by hitting a double down the left field line off Roy Meritt and was brought home on a single to right by Shawn Roof, who was in the bullpen catching Brooks Brown when he got the call from Nevin to pinch hit for second baseman Justin Henry.

"I pretty much always got to be ready in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning. The guys on the bench - we're always looking for a situation like that," Roof said.

After a pitching change by Binghamton, Wilkin Ramirez came to the plate with two-outs and Roof on third. He hit a pitch off Clint Everts to left field that initially looked like a pop-up, but sailed into the outfield and nearly made it out of the park before hitting the top of the wall, allowing Roof to score and tie the game at 5-5.

"I didn't think that ball was even going to hit the wall," Ramirez said.

But the rally was ended in the tenth inning when Brown surrendered the home run.

"It's always tough to lose a game especially after the we clawed back," Roof said. "We fought, but they came out ahead."

Max St. Pierre was pulled from the game in the eighth inning after taking a ball off his right thumb. It is currently believed to be dislocated, but he was taken to the hospital for x-rays.

This led to an interesting development in the seventh inning. Jeff Kunkel, who was brought in for St. Pierre, led off the inning with walk and then took second on an Iorg single. Justin Henry came to the plate, and after fouling off two bunt attempts, laid down another with two strikes and successful sacrificed him to third. He eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

"I have all the faith in the world in Henry, but with Wilkin hitting in the two hole, we want to try and get him up with guys on," Nevin said.

Erie is yet to win a series opener at home this season.

'Wolves Drop Two Straight to B-Mets
By Nick Underhill

Recap Box

A string of victories following an awful start left a giddy feeling among the Erie SeaWolves that has now given way to a brimming sense of frustration.

The SeaWolves lost 4-3 to Binghamton on Tuesday and have now dropped consecutive games in the wake of winning seven of their last eight.

Erie reliever Jared Gayhart gave up the decisive run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the seventh inning when he took a 3-2 pitch over the leftfield wall to give Binghamton its sole and final lead of the game.

"You're never happy when you lose a game, but the way it happened the last two days is a little frustrating," Andy Oliver said.

On Monday Erie (12-13) put together a furious rally and scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra-innings only to lose in the tenth when Binghamton hit a home run to win 7-5.

On the heels of his strongest start of the season, Oliver, the fourth ranked prospect in the Tigers' organization according to Baseball America, pieced together another strong game by allowing three runs over 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and striking out four.

The lefty ran through the Mets' line-up the first three innings with little trouble, needing to face just 11 batters to record the first ten outs.

But he began to run into trouble in the fourth when he lost command of his breaking ball. TheMets (16-9) finally broke Oliver's his armor when Nick Evans hit a homer that landed on the roof of the Erie Civic Center to Erie's early lead in half at 2-1.

"The first couple innings I felt good, but towards the fourth inning I couldn't get my breaking ball over the plate and they just started sitting on fastballs," Oliver said.

After allowing the two leadoff men to score in the sixth, Oliver was pulled in favor of Gayhart, who gave up what proved to be the winning run.

"As far as hitters go, (Nieuwenhuis) probably impressed me the most the month I've been here," Nevin said. "I think that was just one pitch that go away from (Gayhart) and to a great hitter."

Erie tried to fight their way back late, but got little going as the Binghamton bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to close out the game. The SeaWolves managed to put just two men on during the span.

"We got the leadoff hitter on a couple times and weren't able to do anything with it," Nevin said. "It's a credit to them; they did a good job."

Justin Henry had his best game of the year going 2-3 with a run scored. He helped Erie take a 3-1 lead when he led off the third inning with a triple on a ball hit down the leftfield line that careened off the wall into the bullpen, and later scored on an Andy Dirks double.

"I felt good today. I hit the ball hard and got a few to drop in there," Henry. "I felt better here the past few games, I've been hitting the ball hard lately. When you start hitting the ball hard, it starts falling in consistently."

By dropping consecutive games to Binghamton, Erie is in jeopardy of losing of its first series after winning its last five. The best they can do now against Binghamton is tie.

"It is frustrating. We played a good game today, but they got one more big hit than we did," Henry said. "Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow."

'Wolves Split Series With 7-6 Win
By Nick Underhill
05/06/2010 3:56 PM ET

Recap Box

The Erie SeaWolves were in jeopardy of limping out of town having lost three of its last four to Binghamton. Exhausted after playing deep into the night before having to back to Jerry Uht Park for Thursday's 11:05 a.m. start, the SeaWolves offense surged late to give Erie a 7-6 victory.

As a result, the SeaWolves will instead enter their three game stand against Altoona with momentum on their side, having took the last two against Bighamton to return above .500 for just the second time this season at 14-13.

On paper, this contest was set-up to be a pitchers duel. Binghamton (16-11) starter Scott Shaw is coming off a solid season at Class High A St. Lucie where he posted a 3.73 ERA, while Erie starter L.J. Gagnier entered the contest with the fifth lowest ERA in the Eastern League at 2.10.

It was anything but.

Gagnier last five innings, scattered ten hits, allowed four runs and surrendered two homers, while Shaw went 5 1/3, gave up four runs on six hits, and also allowed two home runs.

"He keeps us in the game, he always does that. No, it probably wasn't his best stuff," manager Phil Nevin said. "If they're going to hit them out of the park, make them solo-shots. For the most part he kept the ball in the park on a tough day to pitch."

Gagnier, who recorded five strikeouts, exited the game with Binghamton leading 4-3, but the Erie offense clicked late for four runs over the next two innings.

Wilkin Ramirez led off the sixth with his league leading seventh homer to tie the game up, then in the seventh, after a two-out Andy Dirks double, the Mets decided to try their fate against Cesar Nicolas by intentionally walking Ramirez.

"Tim played a match-up. If they punch out Cesar, we aren't talking about this," Nevin said. "Cesar got one up in the wind, maybe on another day that might be an out and then it's a good move."

Nicolas made them pay for their decision by taking a 3-0 pitch over the left field wall for his third home run of the year to put the 'Wolves up 7-4.

"It says a lot of our skipper that he shows a lot of confidence in us (that he let me swing there) and it stills confidence in us," Nicolas said. "I was just trying to be aggressive on a good pitch and fortunately I got it up in that jet stream and it took off."

Some late inning dramatics nearly gave Binghamton the victory. With Luis Marte on the mound in the ninth, the Mets rallied for a pair of runs after second baseman Justin Henry bobbled a softly hit ground ball that would have went for a inning ending double play.

Instead, a walk, a sacrifice fly and single brought home two before Marte struck out Zach Lutz to end the game and pick up his fourth save.

"You're trying to play damage control there in that spot," Nevin said. "When a closer comes in and they get runners on -- it's the fact that the third one doesn't score."

Cale Iorg, who has been a terror of late hitting .324/.395/.471 over his last ten games, had a scheduled day off. Audy Ciriaco, the regular third baseman, moved to short and Shawn Roof played third.

Josh Burrus, who had Wednesday off, was back in right field and responded by hitting a home run in the third inning.

By going two-for-four with a double, Michael Bertram extended his hitting streak to ten games. After being marred in an awful start, he is now hitting .309 over his last ten games.

"It's just a confidence thing. I made a few adjustments and the results are starting to come," Bertram said. "I made some changes with my hands and my lower half. I was kind of jumping at the ball, a little anxious. I was trying to do much, but now I'm letting it come to me."

Erie travels to Altoona for a three game set beginning Friday. They are 6-1 against the Curve this season.

"They're a good team. They know we swept them before, so they'll be looking for us," Nevin said. "But we know we swept them too."

Below...'Wolves Shut Out Curve 3-0
05/07/2010 9:58 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves won their third straight game on Friday night against the Altoona Curve, 3-0, at Blair County Ballpark. The shutout for was the first of the season for the Howlers.

The 'Wolves struck first against Altoona starter Justin Wilson in the top of the first inning. With one out, Andy Dirks singled but was retired at second when Wilkin Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice. Cesar Nicolas then connected on an opposite-field double down the right field line, scoring Ramirez for a 1-0 lead.

The one run would prove to be just plenty for the SeaWolves pitching staff, paced by starter Duane Below who was making his sixth start of the season. Below allowed just four base runners through his first five innings of work.

Below would then work into the sixth inning for the first time this season. With one out, he allowed a single to Josh Harrison and on a fielder's choice off the bat of Gorkys Hernadnez, an error allowed both runners to reach safely. Below then handed the ball off to Ramon Garcia. Garcia struck out Jordy Mercer for the second out before giving up a two-out single to Matt Hague. With the bases loaded, Garcia induced a groundout off the bat of Jim Negrych to end the inning.

The SeaWolves would tack on a pair of runs in the ninth inning. Former SeaWolf Corey Hamman worked two scoreless innings and retired the first hitter in the ninth before hitting Michael Bertram with one out. After a Max St. Pierre strikeout, Cale Iorg walked to put two on for Shawn Roof. Altoona went to the bullpen bringing in Michael Dubee. Dubee walked Roof to load the bases. Josh Burris then sent a single through the left side, scoring both Bertram and Iorg, giving the 'Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Brooks Brown worked a scoreless eighth and came out to work in the ninth. He retired Negrych on a groundout for the first out and struck out Miles Durham for the second. Alex Presley then singled and Hector Gimenez walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Pinch hitter Chris Watts then struck out to end the game. Brown picked up his second save.

Below (2-3) picked up his second win in his last three starts going a season-high 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Below has now worked at least five innings in each of his last three starts. After starting the season 0-3, he is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three starts.

The SeaWolves have now won seven consecutive road games which is the best road winning streak in the last eight seasons.

The win takes the SeaWolves to a season-high two-games over .500 and improves their record to 6-2 against Altoona.

The two clubs play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday evening at Blair County Ballpark...5:00 First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber (1-2, 3.38 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Tim Alderson (2-0, 5.84 ERA).
