Turner Shines, Holaday Slugs Erie to Win
04/07/2011 10:44 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves started the 2011 campaign off with a bang as they took down the Altoona Curve, 3-2 in dramatic fashion on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park.

The SeaWolves broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Curve starter Bryan Morris. With one out, Deik Scram drew a four-pitch walk bringing Ben Guez to the plate. Guez, who struck out in his first at-bat, turned on a Morris fastball and slammed a two-run home run to the left-field power alley for a 2-0 lead.

Erie starter Jacob Turner held the Curve in check, allowing just two hits over the first six innings, but did not factor in the decision.

The lead held until the top of the eighth when the Erie bullpen faltered. Reliever Matt Hoffman walked back-to-back hitters in Brock Holt and Starling Marte putting the tying runs on base. A Jordy Mercer sacrifice bunt pushed the runners into scoring position. With runners on second and third, Lester Oliveros walked Tony Sanchez, loading the bases. After Oliveros struck out Miles Durham, Quincy Latimore followed with his second double of the game, plating the tying runs.

In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Michael Bertram singled to right, putting the winning run on base. Pinch runner Justin Henry then stole second and moved to third on a Francisco Martinez groundout. With two down, Brian Holaday jumped on the first pitch he saw from reliever Michael Dubee and singled to left, scoring Henry, giving Erie a 3-2 win.

Turner got the no-decision, finishing his night with nine strikeouts and only one walk. The righty retired the final nine batters he faced and both hits he allowed came in the second inning.

Oliveros (1-0) earned the win.

The SeaWolves continue the four-game series with the Curve on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park...6:35 First Pitch. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free magnetic schedule courtesy of Delta Sonic.

NOTE -
For the second consecutive season, Erie's first win of the year came on a walkoff by a catcher against Altoona. Last year, Max St. Pierre broke an eight-game winless streak with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth against the Curve.

Opportunistic 'Wolves Win Second Straight
04/08/2011 10:20 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves had trouble getting the offense started on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park. However, one inning was the difference as they seized the opportunity to plate runs courtesy of Altoona miscues in a 2-1 win.

The Curve struck first in the top of the second inning against Erie starter L.J. Gagnier. With two outs in the inning, Erik Fryer jumped on the first pitch of the at bat and homered to left-center, giving Altoona a 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, Rawley Bishop and Bryan Pounds started the inning with back-to-back singles putting runners on first and second. Francisco Martinez grounded out, moving both runners into scoring position. Bryan Holaday followed with a ground ball back to the mound and Altoona starter Jeff Locke alertly threw to the plate, nailing Bishop for the second out. Locke then struck out Audy Ciriaco which would have been the last out of the inning, however a wild pitch and an errant throw by catcher Tony Sanchez allowed Pounds to come around to score, tying the game at 1-1. With Deik Scram hitting, a second wild pitch allowed Holaday to score, giving the 'Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The strong pitching staff would then take over. Gagnier, along with relievers Jared Gayhart, Austin Wood and Chance Ruffin, limited the Curve to just one hit over the final five innings of the game.

Gagnier (1-0) allowed a run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings to earn the win.

Ruffin, in his first professional appearance, retired the side in order in the ninth for his first career save.

The SeaWolves and Curve continue their four-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park...1:05 First Pitch.

Curve Pitching Stymies SeaWolves Hitters
04/09/2011 4:28 PM ET

Recap Box

The Altoona pitching staff stymied the SeaWolves offense on Saturday afternoon, handing the Howlers their first loss of the season, 6-2 at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie struck first for the second time in the series in the bottom of the first inning against Altoona starter Aaron Thompson. Jamie Johnson led off with a single for his first Double-A hit. A balk moved Johnson to second and a Brandon Douglas sacrifice bunt pushed Johnson to third. Johnson scored on a Rawley Bishop groundout, giving the 'Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Altoona tied the game in the top of the third against Erie starter Luke Putkonen. Eric Fryer led off, walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Fryer moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Brad Chalk and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.

Putkonen worked five innings, allowing one run with two walks and two strikeouts in his first start. He took a no-decision.

Altoona would take the lead in the sixth against reliever Rob Waite. Starling Marte led off and doubled. He scored on a Jordy Mercer base knock for a 2-1 Curve lead. Mercer would eventually come home to score on a Jordan Farrell base hit for a 3-1 advantage.

In the seventh, Chalk tripled with one out and scored on a Brock Hold single for a 4-1 Altoona lead. Altoona added two more runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead by five.

The SeaWolves got one back in the bottom of the eighth but missed out on a golden opportunity to get back into the game. Justin Henry led off with a walk. Johnson singled with one out putting two on for Brandon Douglas. Douglas singled home Henry making it a 6-2 game. Bishop walked to load the bases, however, Bryan Pounds grounded into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play to thwart the Erie threat.

The 'Wolves went quietly in the ninth against Michael Dubee (S-1) en route to their first loss of the season.

Waite (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in relief over two innings of work.

The 'Wolves and Curve wrap up their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park...1:05 First Pitch.

Its Wendy's Scratch & Win Sunday as all fans in attendance receive a guaranteed winning scratch off card. Fans can also play catch in left field following the game presented by Verizon Superpages.

'Wolves Drop Slugfest to Curve
04/10/2011 5:18 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves failed to take the opening series of the season and were left with a split as they fell in a slugfest on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park to the Altoona Curve, 10-7.

Altoona got on the board first in the top of the first inning against Erie starter Casey Crosby. Brock Holt led off the game with a single and moved to third on a Starling Marte double. Jordy Mercer grounded out, scoring Holt for a 1-0 Curve lead. Altoona would never trail in the game.

In the top of the second, Altoona opened up a 5-0 advantage. Jose Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position on a Holt single. Marte grounded home Hernadez for the second Curve run. Mercer doubled home Holt and Tony Sanchez capped off the inning with a two-run home run, his first.

The 'Wolves got on the board in the bottom of the second. Michael Bertram doubled to lead off the inning and he came around to score on a Bryan Holaday base knock to make it a 5-1 game.

In the third, Jeremy Farrell reached base on a one-out error and came home to score on a Hernandez two-out double, extending the Curve lead back up to five runs.

Erie cut into the lead once more in the bottom of the third. Justin Henry walked and moved over to third on a Jamie Johnson double. Henry and Johnson would score on consecutive groundouts to make it 6-3.

In the fourth, Marte led off and homered off of reliever Jared Gayhart for a 7-3 Altoona advantage.

The 'Wolves made it a three-run game once more in the sixth when Henry tripled home Audy Ciriaco who reached on a hit by pitch.

A two-run home run with two outs in the seventh by Farrell gave the Curve a lead of five once more at 9-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Holaday lead off and homered for his first Double-A long ball. A one-out single by Ben Guez extended the inning and Johnson went opposite-field for his first home run to make it 9-7.

Altoona added one more run in the ninth and won by a three-run margin at 10-7.

The SeaWolves open a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets on Monday night...6:35 First Pitch. It will be the first Buck Night of the 2011 season!

Big Seventh Leads to SeaWolves Win
04/11/2011 10:40 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves snapped a two-game skid on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park as they took game one of a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets 7-3.
