SeaWolves Drop Two Straight to Aeros

The SeaWolves dropped their second straight game on Friday night at Canal Park to the Akron Aeros by a score of 5-2. Erie has now lost four of its past five games.

Akron broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Erie starter Brayan Villarreal. With two outs, Juan Apodaca and Cristo Arnal each singled and Jordan Henry walked, loading the bases. Jason Kipnis drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Apodaca for a 1-0 Akron lead. A wild pitch followed with Lonnie Chisenhall at the plate, scoring Arnal for a 2-0 Akron edge.

Erie cut the lead in half in the sixth against Akron starter Corey Kluber. Brandon Douglas led off with a single and moved to third on a Brandon Jones double. Douglas came home to score on a one-out groundout by Bryan Pounds making it 2-1.

In the seventh, the Aeros struck again against reliever Jay Voss. With two outs, Arnal singled, Henry walked and Kipnis singled loading the bases for Chisenhall. Chisenhall drew Akron's second bases loaded walk, scoring Arnal for a 3-1 lead. Jerad Head then doubled against reliever Jose Ortega, plating Henry and Kipnis for a 5-1 lead.

Erie attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth against reliever Connor Graham. Douglas led off with a double down the right field line for his second of three hits. Douglas now has 14 multi-hit games in 25 games played. He moved to third on a groundout by Jones and scored on a Bishop single to make it 5-2. Erie would load the bases with consecutive walks by Pounds and Deik Scram but they could get no closer as Graham induced a fly out off the bat of John Murrian and got a groundout off the bat of pinch hitter Billy Nowlin.

Villarreal (0-4) took the loss allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The SeaWolves and Aeros continue their four-game series on Saturday night at Canal Park...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Jon Kibler (4-5, 5.65 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against LHP Matt Packer (0-2, 4.50 ERA).

Kibler Struggles as 'Wolves are Shut Out

The SeaWolves were shut out for the second time in the last three games as they dropped the third game of a four game series to the Akron Aeros 9-0.

Akron jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Jon Kibler. Jordan Henry walked, Jason Kipnis was hit by a pitch and Lonnie Chisenhall walked to load the bases for Jerad Head. Head hit into a fielder's choice scoring Henry for a 1-0 lead. With tow outs, John Drennen singled home Kipnis for a 2-0 lead.

Akron would continue to build its lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, Christo Arnal and Henry each walked. With two outs, Chisenhall walked loading the bases for head for the second time in the game. Head doubled home Arnal and Henry for a 4-0 lead. Beau Mills then singled home Chisenhall and Head for a 6-0 lead.

Akron took a 7-0 lead in the fourth and knocked Kibler out after four innings of work. Kipnis doubled with one out and moved to third on a Chisenhall base hit. Kipnis scored on a head sacrifice fly.

Akron would add an unearned run in the seventh for an 8-0 against reliever Rob Waite when Head scored on an error. In the eighth, Chisenhall grounded home Arnal for a 9-0 lead against reliever Matt Hoffman.

Kibler (4-6) took the loss in his first start since returning from Class-A Lakeland. He allowed seven runs on seven hits with a season-high six walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.

The SeaWolves have now lost 19 consecutive games at Canal Park dating back to the 2009 season. Erie's last win in Akron was May 24, 2009.

The 'Wolves will look to avoid a four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park...1:35 First Pitch. Lefty Duane Below (5-12, 5.04 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against LHP Scott Barnes (6-9, 4.77 ERA).

'Wolves Take Down Aeros 7-4 on Sunday

The SeaWolves jumped ahead early and held on for a 7-4 victory, salvaging the final game of a four-game series against the Akron Aeros at Canal Park on Sunday afternoon.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second inning against Akron starter Scott Barnes. Rawley Bishop led off with a single to center on the first pitch of the inning. Billy Nowlin doubled home Bishop for a 1-0 lead. With one out, Andy Bouchie walked putting two aboard for Matt Mansilla. Mansilla laid down a bunt, beat it out for a single and on a throwing error by Barnes, Nowlin scored and the runners advanced to scoring position. Kyle Peter was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Brent Wyatt. Wyatt singled home a pair to make it 4-0 and that was followed by a two-run double off the bat of Brandon Douglas for a 6-0 lead.

In the fourth, Wyatt walked with one out and moved to third on Douglas second double of the game. Wyatt came home to score on a sacrifice fly off the bay of Bryan Pounds for a 7-0 lead.

Akron got on the board breaking up the shutout against Duane Below in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Jason Kipnis doubled home Jordan Henry making it a 7-1 game. With Kipnis in scoring position, Lonnie Chisenhall singled home Akron's second run, bringing the Aeros to within five at 7-2. Beau Mills walked to load the bases for Miguel Perez. Perez reached on an infield single against reliever Jay Voss, scoring Chisenhall making it 7-3. Head would score on a John Drennen groundout cutting the Erie lead down to three at 7-4.

Lester Oliveros worked a scoreless ninth for the SeaWolves earning his 12th save of the season.

Below (6-12) picked up the win allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

The victory was Erie's first in Akron since May 24, 2009, snapping a 19-game losing streak at Canal Park.

Erie begins the final homestand of the 2010 season on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park against the Richmond Flying Squirrels...7:05 First Pitch. It will be BUCK NIGHT. Lefty Adam Wilk (1-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against LHP Jake Stevens (4-3, 2.38 ERA).

Wilk Dazzles as 'Wolves Beat Squirrels

The SeaWolves won their second consecutive game as they took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels in the opener of a four-game series at Jerry Uht Park.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the bottom of the first inning against Richmond starter Jake Stevens. Brent Wyatt led off with a single to left and he moved into scoring position on a Brandon Douglas double. Bryan Pounds singled home Wyatt for a 1-0 lead. Douglas came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Billy Nowlin for a 2-0 advantage.

The Flying Squirrels struck back in the top of the second against Erie starter Adam Wilk. With one out, Clay Timpner connected on a solo home run to left, cutting the Erie lead down to a run at 2-1.

Following the home run, Wilk would settle down, keeping the Flying Squirrels off the scoreboard for the next six innings.

Erie would take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Douglas led off with a single for his second of three hits. Pounds walked putting two on with no outs. After reliever Ronnie Ray retired the next two batters, Deik Scram laced a two-run double to the gap in right center, extending the Erie lead.

Richmond would not go quietly in the ninth against reliever Lester Oliveros. The Squirrels loaded the bases with back-to-back singles from Brock Bond and Sharlon Schoop and a walk by Connor Gillaspie. Thomas Neal cut the Erie lead in half bringing home Bond on a fielder's choice. Oliveros got the final two outs striking out Brad Boyer and inducing a game-ending pop out off the bat of Timpner. The save for Oliveros was his 13th in 14 chances.

Wilk (2-0) was stellar in his second Double-A start allowing a run on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work. In two starts with Erie, Wilk has allowed a run on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in 18 innings of work.

The SeaWolves and Flying Squirrels meet in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. RHP Anthony Shawler (4-3, 4.84 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Craig Westcott (3-2, 5.40 ERA).

Nowlin Pounds SeaWolves to Third Straight Win

The SeaWolves won their third consecutive game on Tuesday night as they took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2 in the second game of a four-game series at Jerry Uht Park.

The SeaWolves struck in the first inning for the second consecutive night. Alden Carrithers led off with a single and moved into scoring position on Brandon Douglas 17th double against Richmond starter Craig Westcott. Bryan Pounds singled up the middle, plating both baserunners for a 2-0 lead.

The 'Wolves would take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Billy Nowlin led off and connected on his fourth home run. The solo shot was Erie's first long ball since August 20.

Erie went ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Nowlin led off and connected on an opposite-field home run to right for his fifth homer of the season. He is the first SeaWolf to have a multi-home run game since Pounds accomplished the feat July 6 against Bowie.

Richmond cut the Erie lead in half in the top of the fifth against 'Wolves starter Anthony Shawler. With two outs, Ryan Lormand and Brock Bond each singled. Brad Boyer doubled to the gap in left field, bringing home both Lormand and Bond, making it a 4-2 game.

Shawler gave way to the bullpen in the eighth. Righty Jose Ortega tossed a scoreless eighth while Jay Voss earned his first save tossing a scoreless ninth.

Shawler (5-3) allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts while equaling a season-high tossing seven innings. Erie has now won four of the last five games started by Shawler.

The SeaWolves will look for their fourth consecutive win on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. Righty Brayan Villarreal (0-4, 4.06 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Felix Romero (4-3, 3.55 ERA).

'Wolves Take Down Squirrels to Win Fourth Straight

The SeaWolves won their fourth consecutive game on Wednesday night, taking down the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-1 at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie struck first for the third straight game in the bottom of the third. Brent Wyatt led off the inning with his first triple. With one out, Wyatt came home to score on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Brandon Douglas for a 1-0 lead.

Richmond tied the game against Erie starter Brayan Villarreal in the top of the sixth when Tyler La Torre led off and hit a solo home run to left making it a 1-1 game.

The SeaWolves regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Daryl Maday. With two outs and Douglas hitting, Alden Carrithers stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher La Torre. Douglas sent a soft roller towards the shortstop Brad Boyer. Boyer bare handed but could not get Douglas at first. Carrithers scored giving the 'Wolves a 2-1 advantage.

Erie added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan Pounds led off with a single and Billy Nowlin was hit by a pitch putting two on for Deik Scram. Scram laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing the runners into scoring position. With the infield drawn in, John Murrian lined a two-run double passed a diving Connor Gillaspie at third giving Erie a 4-1 edge.

Reliever Matt Hoffman, who spelled Villarreal in the seventh, worked 2.2 scoreless innings allowing a walk in picking up his first Double-A win.

Cory Hamilton earned his first save by retiring the final out of the ninth.

Villarreal took a no-decision allowing a run on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

The win evened Erie's home record to .500 at 33-33.

Squirrels Fly Away With Big Win Over Erie

The SeaWolves could not complete a series sweep as the Richmond Flying Squirrels ended Erie's four-game winning streak with a 14-0 win at Jerry Uht Park on Thursday night.

Richmond struck for two in the top of the first against Erie starter Jon Kibler when Brad Boyer and Connor Gillaspie each connected on solo home runs for a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, the Flying Squirrels would knock Kibler out of the game. Juan Ciriaco doubled and Tlyer La Torre reached on a sacrifice bunt and an error. Ryan Lormand doubled home Ciriaco for a 3-0 lead. Brock Bond doubled home La Torre and Lormand for a 5-0 lead. An RBI double by Thomas Neal and two-out RBI single off the bat of Clay Timpner drove in two more runs giving Richmond a 7-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Richmond would put the game out of reach against reliever Rob Waite. La Torre led of with a single and Bond walked with one out. On a boucer back to the mound off the bat of Boyer, Waite threw the ball away at second allowing the Squirrels to load the bases. Neal and Gillaspie followed with back-to-back run scoring singles for a 9-0 lead. Timpner singled home two with two outs and Ciriaco homered off of reliever Eric Crichton making it 14-0.

The SeaWolves were shut out for the 10th time this season. Offensively, Erie had a three-hit game from Brent Wyatt and two-hit games from Bryan Pounds and Billy Nowlin.

Kibler (4-7) took the loss allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with no walks and a strikeout in four-plus innings of work.

With the win, the Flying Squirrels won the season series over the Howlers 8-6.

Erie will begin its final series of the season on Friday night against the Akron Aeros at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Duane Below (6-12, 5.11 ERA) takes the mound for the Howlers in the opener.

The SeaWolves brought out their hitting shoes on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park, doubling up the Akron Aeros 10-5 in the opener of a four-game series.

The SeaWolves delivered the opening punch in the first inning as Brandon Douglas reached base with a walk, advanced to second on a steal, and to third on a single by Brandon Jones. Douglas came in to score on a Rawley Bishop sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The Howlers would add onto their lead in the third inning as Douglas got on base with another walk and would come into score on an RBI Double from Jones for a 2-0 edge.

Erie would continue its dominating night in the sixth inning as Billy Nowlin reached base with a single, while Deik Scram and John Murrian each got on with a walk. After Akron starter Scott Barnes was pulled with a 104 pitch count, newcomer Kyle Peter got a two RBI single. Nowlin and Scram would come in to score, while a fielding error on Jordan Henry allowed Murrian to advance to third, while Peters advanced to second. Brent Wyatt followed with a three-run home run to left for a 7-0 Erie lead. Erie completed its scoring as Bishop hit an RBI Double, bringing in Douglas. Jones would also come in to score (while Bishop went to third) on a throwing error from Henry.

In the seventh, the Aeros would finally get on the board as Lonnie Chisenhall led off the inning with a triple and would come in to score with help from Miguel Perez, who got on first due to a fielding error from Douglas.

In the eighth inning, the SeaWolves would get some insurance as Douglas reached base with his fourth walk of the evening, advanced to second and third on wild pitches, and came in to score on a fielder's choice from Bishop, making the score 10-1.

Akron tried to rally in the ninth as Perez would get on base after getting hit on a pitch, advanced to third on a Trent Baker double, and scored courtesy of Cristo Arnal reaching base on an error. Ron Rivera followed with a three-run home run, bringing in Baker and Arnal, making the score 10-5. Akron would get no closer. SeaWolves starter Duane Below (7-12) would get his lone home win, going 6.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Erie and Akron meet in the second game of the four-game set on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Adam Wilk (2-0, 0.56 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Eric Berger (5-5, 4.70 ERA).

The SeaWolves used a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 10th inning for a walkoff win over the Akron Aeros, 5-4, on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Akron struck first in the top of the second inning against Erie starter Adam Wilk. Miguel Perez led off with a double and moved to third on a John Drennen double. Perez came home to score on a one out, ground out from Lucas Montero for a 1-0 Aeors lead.

In the fourth, Akron extended its lead. Perez walked with one out and advanced to scoring position on a Drennen single. Perez came home to score on a two out single off the bat of Montero for a 2-0 lead.

Erie came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Jones led off with walk and Rawley Bishop singled to put two on for Bryan Pounds. Pounds walked to load the bases. Billy Nowlin walked to bring home Erie's first run. Later in the inning, a John Murrian sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2.

The game would remain tied until the top of the 10th inning. With one out and a man on second, the 'Wolves intentionally walked Lonnie Chisenhall setting up a righty righty matchup with Perez coming to the plate. Perez laced a pop fly to shallow right, Brent Wyatt dropped the ball allowing a run to score. On a throwing error later in the play, another run came home to score made it a 4-2 game in favor of the Aeros.

Trailing by two in the bottom of the 10th, Murrian led off and homered to left off of Omar Aguilar. The solo blast made it a 4-3 game and it was Murrian's first Double-A home run. Matt Mansilla followed with a bloop single to right bringing the winning run to the plate in Wyatt. Wyatt, who homered on Friday night, lifted a game-winning, two-run home run over the wall in right for the 5-4 win.

Cory Hamilton (4-1) picked up the win allowing tow unearned runs on one hit in 2.1 innings of work with three walks and no strikeouts.

Wilk took the no-decision allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.

Brown Shut Down Aeros as 'Wolves Win Third Straight

The Seawolves pitchers came out to shine on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park with a 1-0 victory over the Akron Aeros.

The Howlers would get the game's lone run in the fifth inning. Alden Carritehrs singled with one out and advanced to scoring position on a two-out single from Brandon Douglas. Brandon Jones knocked in Carrithers for a 1-0 lead.

The Erie pitching staff then took control. SeaWolves starter Brooks Brown (12-9) would get the win in his first start coming off the disabled list. He shut the Aeros out for six innings allowing two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. With the 12-win season, Brown is now tied for fifth all-time with Nate Cornejo and Dallas Trahern for wins in a single season.

Lester Oliveros picked up his 14th save tossing a scoreless ninth.

Aeros starter Steven Wright (2-2) would get the loss, going five innings and giving up one earned run on five hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.

The Howlers will wrap up their season tomorrow against Akron at 1:05 p.m. in a Buck Day.

'Wolves Fall In Season Finale

The SeaWolves ended the 2010 season with a 9-2 loss at the hands of the Akron Aeros on Monday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.

Akron would strike first against Erie starter Anthony Shawler in the fourth. Jordan Henry led off with a single and stole second. Henry moved to third on a Jason Kipnis groundout and came home to score on a Lonnie Chisenhall single for a 1-0 lead.

Erie responded in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Bryan Pounds walked, Billy Nowlin singled and Brent Wyatt was hit by a pitch loading the bases for John Murrian. Murrian put Erie ahead with a two-run single to center for a 2-1 lead.

Erie would hold the lead until the top of the seventh when the Aeros offense exploded for seven runs. Miguel Perez and Lucas Montero each singled and were brought home on a Juan Apodoca three-run home run for a 4-2 lead. With one out, Trent Bakcer double, Daniel DeGeorge walked and Henry singled loading the bases for Kipnis. Kipnis and Chisenhall each connected on two-run singles for an 8-2 Akron edge.

Akron would go ahead 9-2 on a Kipnis solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Shawler (5-4) took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The 'Wolves finished the 2010 season with a 66-76 record.
