Hens lose in 11; 7-4 to PawSox
By Kyle Rowland
07/30/2010 8:30 PM ET

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens fell to 0-4 in extra inning games this season, losing 7-4 to Pawtucket in 11 innings Friday night at Fifth Third Field.

A Ryan Shealy three-run homer in the top of 11th was the difference.

The Red Sox scored first for the fourth straight game. The runs began today in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Lars Anderson.

The Hens responded in the home half of the inning as Casper Wells hit a solo shot to deep center. Pawtucket centerfielder Josh Reddick gave chase, but could not reach it as he leaped into the wall.

The game wasn't tied for long, however. Former Mud Hens Jack Hannahan homered on the first pitch of the fifth inning to put Pawtucket in front 2-1.

Once again, though, the Hens came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Shawn Roof walked to begin things. After a sacrifice bunt by Chris White, Justin Henry came through with an RBI single to tie the game at two apiece.

For the third consecutive inning, the Red Sox scored on a solo home run. This time it came from Dusty Brown and it put Pawtucket back in the driver's seat with a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Toledo took the lead with two runs. With one out, Roof walked. After a stolen base and strikeout by pinch hitter Scott Sizemore, Roof was on second with two outs. An RBI double by Henry tied the game at three. Ryan Strieby put the Hens in front, 4-3, with an RBI single coming on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. He fouled off five two strike pitches before the base hit.

As they did all night, Pawtucket followed up Toledo's runs with runs of their own. Brown hit a leadoff double. He scored on an RBI single by Aaron Bates, which tied the game at four. Toledo would keep the Red Sox from taking the lead.

The PawSox took the lead in the 11th on a three-run home run by Shealy. Hannahan and Niuman Romero reached base via a single and sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice.

Jay Sborz (1-5) took the loss, while Dustin Richard son (3-0) picked up the win. Robert Manuel collected his ninth save of the season.

The Hens fall below .500 to 53-54.

The Hens start an eight-game road trip tomorrow with a game at 7:05 p.m. at Gwinnett. Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score

Toledo loses wild one, 9-6, to Gwinnett on Saturday
By Kyle Rowland
07/31/2010 8:17 PM ET

GWINNETT, Ga. - The Toledo Mud Hens dropped their third straight game Saturday night, falling 9-6 to the Gwinnett Braves.

The Hens began the scoring in the second on a two-run home run by Ben Guez. Casper Wells, who led off the inning with a double, scored on the play.

Gwinnett answered in the home half of the inning with two runs of its own. Diory Hernandez hit a leadoff double. Matt Young followed it with an RBI triple to make it 2-1. A Joe Thurston groundout was all the Braves needed to tie it at two.

Much like last night, though, the Hens responded to retake the lead. Shawn Roof led off with a double and scored on an RBI double by Justin Henry to put Toledo up 3-2.

The Hens made it 4-2 on an RBI double by Max Leon in the fourth. After Max St-Pierre walked, Toledo had two on and one out. Leon would score when Shawn Roof hit a ground ball that Gwinnett tried to turn into a double play. However, the throw to first was wild, allowing Leon to advance to home.

Gwinnett cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Hernandez tripled with one out and scored on a ground out by Young.

It quickly became 5-4 when Brandon Hicks hit a home run to begin the bottom of the fifth. Clint Sammons and Nate McLouth followed with back-to-back singles. Barbaro Canizares smacked an RBI single to tie the game at five. The Braves would take a 6-5 lead on a ground rule double by Hernandez.

The Hens were able to bounce back and tie the game in the sixth. Brent Dlugach was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then sacrifice to second. Dlugach then stole third. He would score on a sac fly by St-Pierre, making it 6-6.

Like each team had done all night, the Braves answered with a run. Joe Thurston singled to lead off the inning. He stole second, but St-Pierre's throw went into center field. Attempting to throw Thurston out at third, Wells' throw was wild, too, allowing Thurston to score and give Gwinnett a 9-6 advantage.

The Braves added to its lead with two runs in the seventh. Wes Timmons reached base on a throwing error by Dlugach. He would make the most of it as he scored on an RBI single by Canizares. Freddie Freeman, who walked, rounded the bases on a Hernandez line drive base hit, which put the Braves in front by three.

Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth to close the game out, collected his 14th save of the season. Michel Broadway (1-0) got his first win of the year, while Scot Drucker falls to 4-5.

The Hens and Braves continue their series Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score

Game Notes

GWINNETT, Ga. - The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Gwinnett Braves, 9-3, Sunday afternoon to move back to .500 on the season.

It was an error plagued afternoon as the teams combined to have seven errors.

Gwinnett was limited to just three hits on the afternoon.

The Hens got on the board with three runs in the second. Casper Wells led off the frame with a walk before Ben Guez lined out. A single by Max Leon moved Wells to second. Robinzon Diaz cleared the bases with a two-RBI double. Diaz scored to make it 3-0 when Chris White hit a ground ball that couldn't be fielded by Diory Hernandez.

Well then doubled to start the third. He would score three batters later on an RBI single by Shawn Rood to put the Hens up 4-0.

Gwinnett came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Joe Thurston led off with a single before advancing to second on a bulk by Toledo starter Charlie Furbush (). He was moved over to third on a ground out by Brandon Hicks. A walk to Clint Sammons put two on with one out. Nate McLouth hit a grounder back to Furbush. However, his throw to first was off target. Thurston scored and Sammons moved to third. He would score to cut the lead to 4-2 on a ground out by Wes Timmons.

The Braves made it a one run game in the fifth. Hicks singled with one out and advanced to second on a stolen base and third on a throwing error by Diaz. A sac fly by McLouth made it 4-3.

The Hens got a run in the eighth to put some breathing room in. White singled and scored on an RBI single by Dlugach.

Toledo got four more insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Wells and Guez walked to begin the inning. Max Leon followed with a two-RBI single to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Then Diaz scored on a wild pitch by Scott Proctor.

In the top of the fifth, Wladimir Balentien's ground-rule double scored Todd Frazier to give the Bats a 4-3 lead, but the Mud Hens would re-tie the score in the bottom of the frame. Wells tripled to lead off the inning, and after Ben Guez reached on a fielder's choice that did not result in an out, Bertram drove in Wells with a fielder's choice of his own.

The Bats responded in the top of the sixth inning with their final runs of the night. Chris Valaika singled off new Mud Hens pitcher Josh Rainwater (2-4), moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on a single by Castillo. After Rainwater struck out Cozart, Yonder Alonso doubled to deep center to make it a 6-4 game.

By Kyle Rowland
08/10/2010 8:46 PM ET

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens lost a high scoring, back and forth affair, 8-7, over the Louisville Bats Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Bats took command early, scoring two runs in the first. Wilkin Castillo led off the game with a double. A strikeout by Chris Valaika was followed by a Yonder Alonso single. After Todd Frazier was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded for Wladimir Balentien. He hit a two-RBI double to put Louisville up 2-0. Eric Eymann grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Hens battled back, though, scoring five in the bottom of the third. Four of the runs came with two outs. Brent Dlugach led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by Castillo at second. Dlugach was then thrown out at third on a double steal. After a strikeout by Robinzon Diaz there were two outs. Scott Sizemore put the Hens on the board with an RBI single, scoring Henry from second. Will Rhymes followed with an RBI double as Sizemore came all the way around from first base to tie the game at two. Casper Wells walked and Any Dirks singled to give the Hens the lead as Rhymes scored. A two-RBI double by Ben Guez put Toledo up 5-2. A flyout by Mike Bertram ended the carnage for Louisville.

After Valaika was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded with none out. The Bats got one run on a double play ball by Alonso. They cut it to 5-4 on an RBI single by Frazier, scoring Castillo. Balentien followed with an RBI single of his own to tie it at five. Guez threw a strike to home plate to get Frazier, but Diaz couldn't get the tag down. A third consecutive RBI single, this time by Eric Eymann put Louisville in front 6-5. A strikeout to Denove ended the inning.

The Hens tied it at six runs apiece in the home half. Rhymes singled and stole second to start the inning. He tied the game with a run on an RBI single by Dirks. Consecutive strikeouts to Guez and Bertram squelched the threat.

Hens battle, but lose 4-3 to Louisville
By David Schoenholtz
08/11/2010 10:12 PM ET

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens lost their third consecutive one-run game, 4-3, to the Louisville Bats on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Bats scored an unearned run in the first inning against Toledo starter Ryan Ketchner. After Michael Griffin grounded out to begin the game, Zack Cozart reached on an error by Mud Hens shortstop Brent Dlugach. Yonder Alonso popped out for the second out of the inning, but Cozart stole second base and came home on an RBI single by Todd Frazier. Wladimir Balentien followed with a double and Corky Miller drove a ball to deep left field, but Andy Dirks made a nice running catch at the warning track to limit the damage.

In the bottom of the inning, Dirks hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Scott Sizemore, who had led off with a double and moved to third on a Will Rhyme single, tying the game at 1-1.

Dirks gave the Mud Hens a 2-1 lead with his first home run at the Triple-A level in the bottom the third.

The Bats would tie the game and take the lead in the fifth against Louisville starter Micah Owings. A walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Griffin, who grounded into a fielder's choice, with Toledo getting the force at home. Cozart then lifted a fly ball to left; Dirks caught the ball and made a very strong throw to the plate, but Chris Valaika got his foot in just ahead of the tag of Mud Hens catcher Max St-Pierre. After Ketchner walked Alonso to re-load the bases, Frazier hit an infield single to make it a 3-2 game in favor Louisville.

In the sixth, Scott Sizemore's RBI groundout plated Dlugach to tie the game at three.

An RBI double by Louisville's Danny Dorn off Casey Fien (1-3) scored Frazier and gave the Bats a 4-3 advantage in the top of the eighth.

The Mud Hens put the potential tying and winning runs on base against Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth, but did not score.

Fien took the loss for Toledo, whose record now stands at 56-62.

The Hens conclude their series with Louisville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Click for Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score

Mud Hens can't overcome white-hot Bats, lose 10-4
By Kyle Rowland
08/12/2010 8:37 PM ET

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens lost to the Louisville Bats, 10-4, Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. It is the first time in Fifth Third Field history that Louisville has completed a four-game sweep of the Hens.

The Bats had a big inning in the second, scoring four runs on four hits. Todd Frazier flew out to start the frame before Wladimir Balentien singled and Corky Miller walked. After a fielder's choice by Danny Dorn that forced Miller out at second, the Bats had runners on first and third with two out. An RBI single from Chris Valaika put Louisville up 1-0. They took a 4-0 lead on a three-run home run by Eric Eymann. The Hens finally got out of the inning when Zack Cozart popped out.

The Hens cut it to 4-1 on an RBI double by Mike Bertram in the bottom of the fourth that scored Brent Dlugach from first base. They got two more on a two-run shot to deep left by Scott Sizemore in the fifth, which cut the lead to 4-3.

Louisville came right back in the sixth with two runs to take a 6-3 lead. Frazier grounded out to begin in the inning and like the second, Balentien followed him up with a single. He then stole second and Miller singled to advance Balentien to third. After Dorn walked, the bases were loaded. Valaika hit a two-RBI double that was cut off nicely by Dirks in centerfield, saving a run.

The Bats blew the game wide open with three runs in the eighth. Dorn doubled and Valaika singled to start things. After a sac fly by Eymann, it was 7-3 Louisville. They made it a 9-3 ballgame when Yonder Alonso hit a two-RBI double.

Toledo got one run in the eighth on an RBI single by Chris White. Dlugach scored after doubling to lead off the inning.

Louisville added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Chad Reineke picked up his ninth win of the season, improving to 9-7, while Charlie Furbush took the loss for the Hens (2-2).

The Hens welcome the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees to town Friday. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens lost their sixth straight game, 3-2, to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in front of a sold-out crowd on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Yankees took advantage of poor defense to take the lead in the second inning against Toledo starter Andy Oliver (1-3). With one out, Reid Gorecki doubled and stole third base. The Mud Hens got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Ivan Nova (11-3), who retired the first 13 hitters he faced. Ben Guez drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Mike Bertram, and came home on a Brent Dlugach sacrifice fly.

The Yankees got on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Colin Curtis doubled to begin the inning before advancing to third on a wild pitch from LJ Gagnier (5-6). After Curtis singled, Laird popped out for the third out.

The Yankees got another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Nunez. Gagnier got the first two batters of the frame out but then hit Moeller. Russo followed with a single and Gagnier was then replaced by Zach Simons. Nunez then got his RBI single before Miranda grounded out.

Back-to-back doubles by Vazquez and Curtis added to the Scranton lead. Eventually the bases would get loaded and Moeller came through with an RBI single to put the Yankees up 7-0.

The Hens finally got on the board when Casper Wells smacked his 20th home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh. After an out, Ben Guez tripled and scored on a ground out by Brent Dlugach.

By David Schoenholtz
08/15/2010 9:23 PM ET

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens ended their seven-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in front of a sold-out crowd on Sunday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Yankees got on the board in the top of the first inning against Toledo starter Alfredo Figaro (10-6) on three singles - the first by Kevin Russo, the second by Juan Miranda, and the third by Jorge Vazquez.

A home run by Colin Curtis extended the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but the Hens responded with some offense of their own in the bottom of the inning. Yankee starter Lance Pendleton walked Will Rhymes, and after Scott Sizemore struck out, Andy Dirks deposited his third home run of the year over the right-field fence. After Casper Wells popped out, Ben Guez drew a walk, stole second base, and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Justin Henry to make it 3-2.

In the fifth, the Yankees tied the game on three straight hits: a Russo single, a Greg Golson double, and a Jesús Montero RBI single.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had runners on second and third with none out in the seventh, but Figaro struck out Jesús Montero and got Miranda and Vazquez to fly out to put an end to the threat.

Max St-Pierre broke the tie with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Toledo added three insurance runs in the eighth. Sizemore and Dirks opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and after Wells flied out, Guez hit a three-run home run to make it 7-3 in favor of the home team.

The Yankees scored a run against Casey Fien in the top of the ninth on a home run by Eric Bruntlett, but Fien retired the next three hitters to nail down the victory.

Figaro went seven strong innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out 11, to earn the win for the Mud Hens. Toledo is now 1-6 on the homestand.

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens lost their series finale to the visiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 7-4, Monday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on Eric Bruntlett's solo home run in the top of the third. They made it a 2-0 ballgame when Jorge Vazquez homered to deep center in the fourth.

The Hens tied it at two in the home half of the fourth. Ben Guez and Mike Bertram hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning before Justin Henry struck out. Max St-Pierre followed with a two-RBI double to gap in left-centerfield. Outs from Will Rhymes and Scott Sizemore ended the threat.

Scranton answered, though, in the fifth, retaking the lead with two runs. Chad Huffman reached base when St-Pierre dropped a pop up. After Kevin Russo walked and Bruntlett singled, the bases were loaded. Greg Golson hit a sacrifice fly and Jesus Montero grounded out to put the Yankees back in front by two at 4-2. Andy Dirks got the third out with an outstanding catch in center.

In the seventh, Brunlett was hit by a pitch and Russo walked to begin the frame. They were sacrificed to second and third on a bunt by Golson. Montero then hit a sac fly that scored Bruntlett, who barely beat Casper Wells' throw from left. Juan Miranda followed with a two-run home run to put the Yankees up 7-2.

With two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Sizemore hit a two-RBI single to get the Hens within three. Dirks followed with a line drive, but it was hit right to Huffman in leftfield.

Hens beat Clippers in 12
By David Schoenholtz
08/25/2010 10:22 PM ET

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens won in dramatic fashion, 5-4 in 12 innings, over the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Hens jumped on Yohan Piño in the bottom of the second inning. After Ben Guez struck out, four straight hits - a Mike Bertram single, a Chris White infield single, a Robinzon Diaz RBI double, and a Shawn Roof two-run single - gave the Mud Hens a 3-0 lead.

Columbus got one run back in the top of the third on an Ezequiel Carrera triple and an L.J. Gagnier wild pitch.

A Wes Hodges solo home run made it a 3-2 game in the fourth, and the Clippers tied the game in their next turn at-bat. Josh Rodriguez singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Constanza, and came home on an error by Jeff Frazier.

Toledo re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a triple by Diaz and a Justin Henry sacrifice fly, and Columbus tied it again in the top of the sixth on a Jordan Brown double, a passed ball by Diaz, and a Luke Carlin sacrifice fly. Frazier atoned for his misplay earlier in the game by throwing out Drew Sutton at the plate to end the inning. Sutton, who had walked and stolen second base, was trying to score on a single by Rodriguez.

The Hens and Clippers traded zeroes for the next six innings. Columbus threatened in the top of the 12th as Cord Phelps hit a long fly ball that went for a triple, but Casey Fien got Jared Goedert to ground out to keep preserve the tie.

In the bottom of the 12th, Roof drew a one-out walk but was caught stealing. With two down and nobody on base, Henry singled, Cale Iorg was hit by a pitch, and Scott Sizemore hit a ground ball up the middle that Rodriguez fielded. Sizemore beat the throw to first, and Henry raced around third and scored to end the game.

Fien earned the win for the Mud Hens.

The Hens head to Indianapolis for a two-game series with the Indians before traveling to Louisville for three games with the Bats. They return to Toledo to host the Bats at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31. Click for Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score
