Hens shut out 8-0 in Columbus
By David Schoenholtz
09/02/2010 10:18 PM ET

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens were shut out by the Columbus Clippers, 8-0, on Thursday afternoon at Huntington Park.

Columbus scored in each of the first three innings off Charlie Furbush (3-4). Jose Constanza led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, and was forced at second on an Ezequiel Carrera fielder's choice. After Drew Sutton flied out, Carrera stole second and scored on an RBI single by Wes Hodges.

In the second, Jared Goedert drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came home on a Josh Rodriguez RBI double. Damaso Espino followed with an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.

The Clippers knocked Furbush out of the game in the bottom of the third. Sutton and Hodges began the inning with back-to-back doubles, and after Matt McBride walked, Goedert hit an RBI single to plate Hodges. Furbush then got Rodriguez to fly out, but Espino's second RBI single of the game brought an end to Furbush's night. Scot Drucker came in and was greeted by an Argenis Reyes RBI single. Constanza then reached on an error by Shawn Roof to load the bases. Drucker struck out Carrera, but walked Sutton to force in a run and make it 8-0. The inning came to a merciful end when Hodges popped out.

David Huff (8-2) went seven scoreless innings for the Clippers, and Aaron Laffey and Jess Todd each threw a scoreless inning to complete the shutout.

The Hens continue their series with Columbus on Friday. They return to Toledo to host the Clippers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Click for Upcoming Game Tickets | Box Score

Lead-off hits key in 5-3 Hens' win
By Philipp Levering, Toledo Mud Hens

Columbus, OH - After a shut-out loss the night before in Columbus, Toledo looked to lefty Andy Oliver to keep the Clippers' bats in check, but it was the Hens offense that got it going just enough to "clip" the hosts Friday night, 5-3.

Toledo got started early when Scott Sizemore led off the game with a triple to deep center field. With one out, the run scored on an RBI groundout by Andy Dirks for the 1-0 lead. Toledo doubled the lead in the fourth after Dirks led off the inning with an extra-base hit of his own, a double, extending his hitting streak to five games. Dirks scored later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Bertram.

Columbus tied the game in the bottom half of the frame as Oliver struggled with his control on the mound for the Hens. Two walks in the inning set the stage for a two-out, two-run double by Jerad Head to knot the score. Oliver held on for the win despite finishing with five walks - and allowing a Wes Hodges home run later in the game - because of a huge inning that proved to be just enough for the visitors.

All-Star outfielder Jeff Frazier led the sixth inning off with a missled double down the left field line. He scored on a Justin Henry base knock, who was then driven home by Max Leon's one-out triple. Chris White closed the scoring with another extra-base hit, a double, to give the Hens a three-run cushion.

After Andy Oliver (3-4) departed, the HenPen stepped up to preserve the victory; Brendan Wise continued his late-season brilliance with a two inning hold to set up Casey Fien's (7) perfect ninth inning save as the Hens held on for the 5-3 win.

GAME NOTES | Box Score

Wise-Not-Cracking: No joke! RHP Brendan Wise has thrown 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings to shrink his ERA to a stunning 2.13 for the year. He struck out 8 during that span.

Reachin' Base: The Hens had lead-off runners on base in all but one inning - the third - courtesy of 7 hits in the 8 innings they reached base to start a frame.
