2008 Erie Sea Wolves Season Tracker

The SeaWolves fell in the series opener to the Trenton Thunder on Monday night at Waterfront Park, 4-3. The 'Wolves allowed a pair of unearned runs which proved to be the difference in the game.

Trenton jumped ahead against Erie starter Josh Rainwater in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Jackson and Colin Curtis connected on back-to-back singles with one out to put runners on the corners for Edwar Gonzalez. Gonzalez singled home Jackson for a 1-0 Thunder lead.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the second. Jeff Frazier and Dusty Ryan connected on back-to-back singles with one out. Kody Kirkland then singled to left and on an error by Colin Curtis, Frazier scored, tying the game at 1-1.

Trenton regained the lead in the bottom of the second. Jose Tabata and P.J. Pilittere led off with singles and Chris Malec walked to load the bases. Rainwater struck out Reegie Corona for the first out bringing Ramiro Pena to the plate. Pena grounded to first and on Ryan Roberson’s throw the plate, Ryan dropped the ball. The error allowed Tabata to score, giving Trenton a 2-1 advantage.

Erie again tied the game in the top of the third. Danny Worth led off with a single and moved to second with two outs on a walk by Wilkin Ramirez. Justin Justice followed with a single to left, scoring Worth from second, tying the game at 2-2.

The game would continue to go back and forth as in the bottom of the fifth, Trenton would regain the lead at 3-2 when Reegise Corona led off with a solo home run over the wall in right. The home run for Corona was his first of the season.

The ‘Wolves tied the game in the top of the sixth. Frazier led off with a double into right field for his second hit of the game. He now leads the team with 23 multi-hit games. Frazier moved over to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan to make it a 3-3 game.

Trenton would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Pilittere singled with one out. Chris Malec followed and grounded a ball back to the mound. On the play, Rainwater made an errant throw to second allowing both runners to reach safely. Corona followed with his second hit of the game, an RBI-single, scoring Pilittere, giving Trenton a 4-3 lead.

Thunder reliever Mark Melancon tossed three scoreless innings of relief to close the game, picking up his first save of the season. The only hit Malancon gave up in the final three innings was a two-out single to Ryan in the eighth.

Rainwater (5-3) was the touch luck loser for Erie. He went six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Reliever Anthony Tomey tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Rainwater.

The loss drops Erie to 6-16 in one-run games and to 0-7 in Monday games.

The Trenton Thunder down the SeaWolves on Tuesday night by a score of 6-2 at Waterfront Park. The 'Wolves have dropped two straight games and are 2-6 on their current road trip.

Trenton struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Andrew Kown. Ramiro Pena and Colin Curtis hit back-to-back singles. Kown then walked Austin Jackson to load the bases and issued a bases loaded walk to P.J. Pilittere for a 1-0 Trenton lead. Cody Ehlers then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that scored Curtis from third for a 2-0 Thunder lead.

In the bottom of the second, Trenton would strike again, going ahead 3-0. Chris Malec and Edwar Gonzalez reached on back-to-back singles. Malec would come in to score on a fielder’s choice by Curtis.

The ‘Wolves would cut the Trenton lead down to a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Caonabo Cosme singled with one out to get the inning started. With two outs, Kody Kirkland kept the inning alive with his second single of the game, putting two on base for Jeff Frazier. Frazier laced a single to the gap in left center, bringing home Cosme, making it a 3-1 game in favor of the Thunder.

Trenton added to their lead to go ahead by four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Gonzalez led off with his fourth home run of the season. The solo-shot put the Thunder up 4-1.

The Thunder would take their largest lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Reegie Corona singled with one out and stole second for his 13th steal of the season. Corona scored on a two-out single by Curtis for a 5-1 lead.

Erie cut the lead back down to three runs in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Eric Wordekemper. Wilkin Ramirez led off the inning with a walk and he moved over to second on a one-out single by Frazier. Frazier, who finished the night 2-for-4, has four hits in the series and leads the team with 24 multi-hit games. Ryan Roberson stepped in and hit a bloop single to center, scoring Ramirez, making it a 5-2 game. The hit for Roberson extended his hitting streak to 17-consecutive games which ties New Britain’s Luke Hughes for the longest in the Eastern League this season.

Trenton would add a run in the bottom of the eighth to go ahead 6-2 and they would go on to win by that margin.

Phil Coke (5-3) picked up the win for Trenton going seven innings, allowing a run on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Kown (4-9) took the loss for Erie working 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. It was Kown’s third straight loss.

The loss drops the SeaWolves to 0-6 against the Thunder in 2008.

The Trenton Thunder pitchers baffled Erie’s hitters for the third straight night as they took down the ‘Wolves 7-0 on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park.

Trenton went ahead for the third straight night in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Ben Fritz. Colin Curtis doubled with one out to put a man in scoring position. With two outs, P.J. Pilittere grounded a ball to short that was booted by Caonabo Cosme. The error allowed Curtis to score, giving Trenton a 1-0 lead. Cody Ehlers walked and Jose Tabata doubled home a pair to make it 3-0. All three runs were unearned against Fritz.

Trenton added to the lead in the bottom of the second. Edwar Gonzalez led off and was hit by a pitch. Reegie Corona walked to put a pair on for the top of the lineup. Ramiro Pena successfully sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Erie then intentionally walked Curtis to set up a potential double play ball. Austin Jackson followed and hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gonzalez for a 4-0 Thunder lead.

The Thunder would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Corona led off with a double and Pena singled to put runners on the corners for Curtis. Curtis doubled home both Corona and Pena for a 6-0 lead. Curtis would be thrown out scampering back to second for the first out of the inning. With two outs, Pilittere singled and was brought home on an Ehlers double for a 7-0 lead. The seven-run advantage would prove to be enough for the Thunder pitching staff.

Trenton starter Eric Hacker (2-1) went 6.2 innings, allowing four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. A pair of Trenton relievers, Zach Kroenke and Anthony Clagged kept the ‘Wolves hitless over the final 2.1 innings of the game to preserve the shutout.

Fritz (2-3) went six innings for Erie, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Offensively, Erie was limited to just four hits in the game. Jeff Frazier went 2-for-4, Justin Justice went 1-for-3 as did Ryan Roberson. All four of Erie’s hits were singles and they did not get a runner passed second base in the game.

One bright spot for the offense was Roberson’s one-out single in the second. The base knock extended his season-best hitting streak to 18-straight games. The 18-game streak is the longest hitting streak in the Eastern League in 2008. Roberson edged passed New Britain’s Luke Hughes who hit in 17-straight April 21-May 15.

The SeaWolves avoided a four-game sweep against Trenton with a 6-1 win at Waterfront Park on Thursday afternoon.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the top of the fourth inning, taking their first lead of the series. Wilkin Ramirez tripled for the fifth time with one out. Jeff Frazier followed with his seventh hit of the series, an RBI double, scoring Ramirez for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Roberson then reached on an error by the shortstop Ramiro Pena to put a pair on. With two outs, Dusty Ryan doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring Ramirez and Roberson for a 3-0 ‘Wolves advantage.

In the top of the sixth inning with two outs, reliever Bo Hall yielded a double to the gap in left field off the bat of Roberson. The hit extended his league-best hitting streak to 19-straight games.

The ‘Wolves would add to their lead in the top of the seventh against Hall. Kody Kirkland singled to center with one out and on a hit-and-run, Danny Worth singled to right to put runners on the corners for Will Rhymes. Rhymes singled to the gap in right-center, scoring Kirkland for a 4-0 lead. Worth advanced to third on a base hit by Rhymes and he would score on a sacrifice fly by Deik Scram to put the ‘Wolves up 5-0.

Trenton got on the scoreboard against Erie’s starter Danny Christensen in the bottom of the seventh. Edwar Gonzalez led off and doubled to the wall in center. Chris Malec followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Jose Tabata. Tabata grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and on the play, Gonzalez scored to cut Erie’s lead down to four runs at 5-1.

The Howlers would go back ahead in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Roberson stepped in against Hall and hammed the first pitch of the at bat down the left field line but it was foul. The very next pitch, Roberson did not miss as he connected on his second hit of the game. This time, it was a solo home run, his 12th, over the wall in left-center to put Erie up 6-1.

Christensen (5-5) was stellar in picking up his fifth win of the season. He tossed eight innings, allowing a run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. It was the second time this season that Christensen has worked eight innings in a game. It was the fourth straight start where he worked six or more innings. Christensen is now 5-1 with three no-decisions in his last nine starts.

Erie SeaWolves left fielder Wilkin Ramirez has been selected to the World Team roster at the 10th Annual Future’s Game to be played at Yankee Stadium.

In 63 games for the SeaWolves in 2008, the 22-year old Ramirez is hitting .290 with nine home runs and 32 RBI. He also collected 16 doubles and five triples.

Ramirez is the 14th best prospect in the Tigers organization according to Baseball America.
The Future’s Game will be a part of Major League Baseball All-Star festivities on Sunday, July 13 at 12:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN 2.

The SeaWolves won a thriller at Jerry Uht Park, 2-1 over the Harrisburg Senators in the opener of a three-game weekend series.

Erie got on the board in the bottom of the third against Harrisburg starter Craig Stammen. Jeff Kunkel led off with his first Double-A hit and Casper Wells walked to put two on with no one out. Will Rhymes followed with a single to right center, scoring Kunkel, putting the ‘Wolves ahead 1-0. On the play well moved from first to third and he scored on a Wilkin Ramirez sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.

The Senators cut the lead down to a run in the top of the fourth. Luis Jimenez stepped in with two outs and connected on a solo home run over the wall in left field. The home run was his 12th of the season and it made it a 2-1 game in favor of the ‘Wolves.

Luke French (5-7) picked up his fifth win and second victory over Harrisburg going eight innings, allowing a run on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. French lowered his ERA down to 4.50 and is 2-1 with a no-decision in his last four starts. It also marked the second straight day where an Erie starting pitcher worked eight innings.

Casey Fien entered the ballgame in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Jimenez. Ofilio Castro laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Jimenez into scoring position. Fien struck out Andrew LeFave for the second out. On a Garrett Guzman intentional walk, Fien tossed a wild pitch allowing Jimenez to reach third. He then struck out pinch-hitter Marco Yepez for the final out of the game, picking up his seventh save of the season.

The SeaWolves were limited to just three hits in the game but made the most of them as they never trailed in the game.

Ryan Roberson went 0-2 with a walk and his 19-game hitting streak came to an end.

The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Harrisburg starter Bobby Brownlie when Wilkin Ramirez homered for the 10th time to put Erie ahead 1-0.

In the top of the second, the Senators tied the game against Erie starter Josh Rainwater. Devin Ivany led off with a single and he was doubled home with two outs on a double by Andrew LeFave.

The Senators would take the lead in the top of the third. Rainwater walked the first three batters of the inning to load the bases. Luis Jimenez connected on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Mike Daniel, for a 2-1 lead. Rainwater retired the final two batters of the inning to minimize damage.

Harrisburg would take a two-run lead in the top of the fifth. William Bergolla led off with a walk and was doubled home by Marco Yepez for a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Will Rhymes led off with a single and he stole second for his 13th stolen base of the season. Ramirez singled for his second hit of the game to put runners on the corners. Ryan Roberson then came to the plate and struck out swinging, but on the play, a wild pitch allowed Roberson to reach and Rhymes to score to cut the Sens lead down to a run at 3-2.

The SeaWolves would regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jeff Frazier led off with a single and he would come home to tie the game 3-3 on a triple by Dusty Ryan. Ryan would come home to score on a sacrifice fly by Justin Justice for a 4-3 Erie advantage.

Ramirez led off the bottom of the seventh with a monster home run over the Civic Center in left-center for a 5-3 Erie lead. The home run was his second of the game and 11th of the season. The home runs were his first two since returning to the ‘Wolves from Triple-A Toledo.

Juan Cedneo (3-1) worked 1.1 scoreless innings and picked up a win in relief of Rainwater.

Rainwater took the no-decision going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Casey Fien came into the game in the top of the ninth inning and worked a 1-2-3 frame with a pair of strikeouts, one of Yepez to end the game. Fien picked up his eighth save of the season and his second in as many nights.

The Erie SeaWolves won their fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park, completing a three-game series sweep of the Harrisburg Senators by a score of 11-5.

The Senators jumped ahead on Erie starter Andrew Kown in the top of the first inning. Garrett Guzman led off the game with a base hit and he scored on a Marco Yepez double to put the Sens ahead 1-0. Harrisburg would load the bases in the inning, but Kown battled out of the jam with an inning-ending double play.

The SeaWolves would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Shawn Roof singled with one out and he scored on an RBI double by Will Rhymes, tying the game at 1-1. With two outs, Wilkin Ramirez stepped in and connected on an opposite-field solo home run to put the ‘Wolves ahead 2-1.

Harrisburg would come back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Andrew LeFave, Ofilio Castro and Seth Bynum all walked to load the bases with no outs. Guzman connected on a fielder’s choice, scoring LeFave, tying the game at 2-2.

Erie responded in a big way in the bottom half of the fifth as they would take the lead for good. Roof led off with a base hit and Rhymes singled to put two on for Ramirez. Ramirez singled, scoring Roof, putting Erie back ahead at 3-2. A double steal on a strikeout of Ryan Roberson put a pair in scoring position for Deik Scram. Scram singled to right, bringing home Rhymes and Ramirez for a 5-2 lead. Jeff Frazier followed with a double, scoring Scram for a 6-2 advantage. Reliever Jack Spradlin entered the game following a walk to Dusty Ryan and with two on base got Justin Justice to ground out for the second out. Spradlin then struggled to find the strikezone as he walked Kody Kirkland to load the bases and walked Roof to bring home Frazier for a 7-2 lead. Will Rhymes followed with a bases loaded walk to score Ryan for an 8-2 lead. In the inning, Erie sent 12 to the plate, scoring six times.

The Senators cut into the lead in the top of the sixth. Luis Jimenez connected on his 13th home run of the season with one out to make it 8-3. Kown walked back-to-back hitters and was lifted for Brendan Wise who gave up a two-run double to Ofilio Castro to make it an 8-5 game in favor of the ‘Wolves.

The ‘Wolves battled right back to add to their lead in the top of the sixth. Roberson led off with a double and was doubled home by Scram for a 9-5 lead. Frazier singled for his third hit of the game to put runners on the corners for Ryan. Ryan singled home Scram to give Erie a 10-5 lead. Later in the inning, Frazier would score on a groundout by Kirkland to make it 11-5.

Wise combined with Danny Zell and Matt Rusch to not allow a hit over the final three innings of the game, sealing the Erie victory.

Kown (5-9) picked up his first win since June 7 and his second home win of the season. He went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

The sweep was Erie’s third of the season and the club has won four straight for the first time since April 25-29.

The SeaWolves four-game winning streak came to an end on Monday night at the hands of the Akron Aeros, 6-5, at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Akron starter Frank Herrmann. Ryan Roberson singled with two outs and Deik Scram walked to put a pair on for Jeff Frazier. Frazier singled to right and on the play, right fielder Bronson Sardinha misplayed the ball allowing both runners to score, giving Erie a 2-0 lead.

Akron responded in the top of the second against Erie starter Ben Fritz. Wes Hodges led off with a single and Matt Whitney walked with one out to put a pair on for Ryan Goleski. Goleski struck out for the second out bringing Wyatt Toregas to the plate. Toregas homered for the second time this season, over the wall in left, giving the Aeros a 3-2 lead.

The ‘Wolves struck right back in the bottom half of the second. Kody Kirkland singled with one out and got to second on an error by Herrmann. With two down, Will Rhymes stepped in and connected on his second home run of the season over the wall in right. The two-run blast put Erie back ahead 4-3.

Akron would again take the lead in the next half inning. Jose Constanza led off with a single and was doubled home by Josh Rodriguez, tying the game at 4-4. Sardinha then doubled home Rodriguez to give Akron a 5-4 lead.

The Aeros added a sixth run in the top of the sixth when Toregas picked up his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, scoring Stephen Head, for a 6-4 advantage.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth inning. The Aeros went to their closer Randy Newsom. Dusty Ryan led off with a walk and Justin Justice singled to put runners on the corners for Kirkland. Kirkland singled through the right side, scoring Ryan, making it a one-run game in favor of Akron at 6-5. Shawn Roof followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position for the top of the Erie lineup. Newsom intentionally walked Rhymes to load the bases with one out. Wilkin Ramirez struck out for the second out and Roberson lifted a ball to right field that Sardinha made a running grab on to end the game.

Fritz (2-4) took the loss for Erie going six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Herrmann improved to 8-3 going six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Akron Aeros shut down the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park by a score of 9-1. Akron scored early and often and the ‘Wolves could not combat the top hitting team in the lead.

In the top of the first, Trevor Crowe led off the game with a single and Josh Rodriguez walked against Erie starter Danny Christensen. A flyout by Bronson Sardinha allowed Crowe to advance to third and score on a groundout by Wes Hodges for a 1-0 Akron lead. Stephen Head followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0 Aeros.

Akron would strike again in the top of the second when Ryan Goleski led off with his seventh home run over the wall in left for a 3-0 lead. Wyatt Toregas followed with a double and he would score on a one out sacrifice fly by Rodriguez, putting Akron ahead 4-0.

The SeaWolves cut the lead down to three in the bottom of the fourth when Dusty Ryan hammered his 13th home run of the season to the deepest part of “The Uht” to make it a 4-1 game. It would be the only run Erie would score in the game.

The Aeros would put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth. Crowe led off with a double, his third hit of the game. An error at short off the bat of Rodriguez would put runners on the corners. With one out, Wes Hodges singled home Crowe to put Akron back up by four at 5-1. Head then doubled home a pair for a 7-1 lead. Matt Whitney capped off a four-run inning when he doubled home head for an 8-1 Akron advantage.

Akron finished the night’s scoring in the top of the seventh when Head connected on his third hit of the game, a solo home run off of reliever Brendan Wise for an 8-1 lead.

Christensen (5-6) took the loss for the ‘Wolves going 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. It was the first time since May 18 where Christensen did not work at least five innings in a ballgame. The eight runs were also the most he has given up this season.

FAN SELECTIONS – Fans of each Eastern League club voted for one pitcher and one position player for the All-Star Game. The position player selected by the SeaWolves faithful is catcher Dusty Ryan and the pitcher is right-handed reliever Casey Fien.

C – DUSTY RYAN – Dusty has been one of the most dominant catchers in the league this season and has helped the SeaWolves to the best caught-stealing percentage in the league (52.2 percent). Dusty is the team leader and is tied for fifth in the league with a career-high 13 home runs. In 58 games, Ryan is batting .273 with 12 doubles, a triple and 40 RBI (Team RBI leader). He is in his first season with the SeaWolves and is playing in his fifth in pro ball. Dusty was tabbed as the best defensive catcher in the Tigers organization following the 2007 season by Baseball America. Ryan was the Tigers 48th round selection in the June 2003 draft out of Merced Junior College (CA). He joins Max St. Pierre and Mike Rabelo as former Erie catchers to be named to the EL mid-summer classic.

RHP – CASEY FIEN – Casey made the jump to Double-A in 2008 after a dominant 2007 season with Class-A West Michigan. Fien leads the SeaWolves with 31 appearances and has a 2.68 ERA. In 37.0 innings pitched, he has allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, on 31 hits with 10 walks and 35 strikeouts. Fien has allowed just one run in his last 15 outings (14.2 IP). He did not allow a single run in the month of June (10.2 IP). Fien was the Tigers 20th round selection in the June 2006 draft out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is in his third season of pro ball.

OF – WILKIN RAMIREZ – Wilkin has come into his own in 2008 as a power-hitting corner outfielder for the SeaWolves. In 68 games for the ‘Wolves, Ramirez is hitting .297 with 16 doubles, six triples, 12 home runs (Tied for second on the club) and 37 RBI. He also leads the team with a .538 slugging percentage. Ramirez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Tigers on February 3, 2003. The 22-year old received an invited to Major League spring training with Detroit in 2008 and is the 14th-best prospect in the Tigers organization according to Baseball America. Ramirez is in his sixth season of pro ball and his second with Erie. He appeared in 34 regular season games for the ‘Wolves in 2007 and in one game of the Eastern League Southern Division Championship series where he collected a pair of hits. Ramirez was also recently named to the World Roster for the 2008 Future’s Game to be played at Yankee Stadium on July 13.

1B – RYAN ROBERSON – After a slow start in 2008, Ryan has emerged as one of the most consistent hitters in the SeaWolves lineup. He raised his batting average from .251 at the end of May to .276 following a monster June. In 18 games in June, Roberson batted .343 (23×67) with four home runs and 15 RBI. On the season, Roberson is batting .273 with 12 doubles, 12 home runs (Tied for second on the club) and 38 RBI. He had an EL-best 19-game hitting streak from May 28-June 26. Roberson is in his fourth season of pro ball and his first with the SeaWolves. He was the Tigers 30th round selection of the June 2005 draft out of George Washington University (DC).

The SeaWolves dropped their third straight game to the Akron Aeros, 10-6 on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Akron jumped ahead of Erie starter Luke French in the top of the first inning. Brandon Pinckney led off the game with a solo home run for a 1-0 Aeros lead.

Akron would build a 3-0 lead in the second. Wyatt Toregas homered for the third time and Bronson Sardinha singled home Pinckney.

In the top of the third, the Aeros would strike again. Matt Whitney led off with a base knock and he scored on Ryan Goleski’s eighth home run of the year. With two down in the inning, Pinckney homered for the second time in the game. The two-home run inning gave Akron a 6-0 lead.

Akron added a seventh run on Toregas’ second home run in the game in the top of the seventh with two outs.

Erie got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. EL All-Star Ryan Roberson led off with his 13th home run of the season against Akron starter Kevin Dixon. The solo-shot over the batters eye in center made it a 7-1 game. Roberson is now tied with teammate and EL All-Star Dusty Ryan for the team lead with 13 long balls. With two outs in the inning, Jeff Kunkel crushed a solo home run, his first in Double-A, off of reliever Reid Santos to make it 7-2.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Erie would have a scoring opportunity with the bases loaded with no outs but they could not convert. Will Rhymes and Wilkin Ramirez both singled and Jeff Frazier walked to load the bases. Santos induced a pop fly to center and a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

Following a three run Akron top of the ninth, Erie would strike back in the bottom half against Jim Deters. Kody Kirkland led off with his fourth triple of the season and scored on a Kunkel sacrifice fly to make it 10-3. Shawn Roof and Will Rhymes both singled to put a pair on for Ramirez. Ramirez popped out for the second out. Frazier then grounded to short, and on the play, an error by Pinckney at short allowed Roof to score to make it 10-4. Deik Scram walked to load the bases for Roberson. Roberson singled to the right-center gap, plating both Rhymes and Frazer to make it 10-6. Deters got out of the inning with a strikeout to end the game.

French (5-8) failed to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. He went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

The SeaWolves and Aeros wrap up their four-game series on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. RHP Josh Rainwater (5-3, 4.65 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against LHP Scott Lewis (3-1, 5.63 ERA).

The SeaWolves shut out the Akron Aeros 2-0 on Thursday night, avoiding the four-game sweep. The ‘Wolves were paced by a brilliant starting pitching performance by Josh Rainwater in the victory.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead on Akron starter Scott Lewis in the bottom of the fourth. Wilkin Ramirez led off with a single for the first Erie hit of the game. With one down, Ryan Roberson laced a liner into center. On the play, the ball got passed a diving Bronson Sardinha all the way to the wall. Ramirez would score and Roberson would reach third for his first triple of the year to give Erie a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Kody Kirkland singled to left, scoring Roberson for a 2-0 Erie advantage. The two runs would stand up in the game as Rainwater slammed the door.

The Aeros threatened against Rainwater in the fifth inning when Ryan Goleski led off with a hit by pitch and Wyatt Toregas walked to put two on with no outs. He battled back to strikeout Brandon Chaves and induce a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Brandon Pinckney.

Rainwater (6-3) finished the game going eight innings (longest outing of the season) allowing just three hits with walk and a season-high nine strikeouts. It was the first time since July 7 of 2006 when Rainwater struck out nine in a game against Clinton while playing for West Michigan. His career high in strikeouts is 11, which he did twice in 2004 and 2005. He is the first Erie pitcher to get to six wins.

Casey Fien came into the game in the top of the ninth inning and slammed the door to pick up his ninth save of the season.

The SeaWolves battle two rain delays and three errors as they fell to the Bowie Baysox in the series opener at Prince George’s Stadium, 6-4 on Friday night.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Bowie starter Chris Tillman. Wilkin Ramirez singled up the middle with one out. With two outs, Ryan Roberson doubled over the right fielder’s head, scoring Ramirez, giving Erie a 1-0 lead. The RBI was Roberson’s team-leading 43rd.

After a lengthy rain delay, Andrew Kown came back out to work in the bottom of the second and the Baysox would take advantage of the layoff. Ryan Finan led off and connected on his seventh home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Jonathon Tucker followed with a walk and was doubled home by Sebastion Boucher to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead. Blake Davis followed with a double that scored Boucher, putting the Baysox up 3-1. Later in the inning, Davis would score on a wild pitch to put the Baysox ahead 4-1.

The SeaWolves struck back in the top of the fourth inning. Kody Kirkland led off the inning against Bowie reliever Rommie Lewis and slammed his seventh home run of the season. The solo-shot cut the Baysox lead in half at 4-2. Casper Wells followed with a walk and Shawn Roof singled to put a pair on for the top of the lineup. Will Rhymes singled home Wells to make it a one-run gave at 4-3. Ramirez walked to load the bases bringing Jeff Frazier to the plate. Frazier grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Roof, tying the game at 4-4.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the eighth inning. Reliever Angel Castro, in his third inning of work, walked Tucker and Boucher with one out. A wild pitch would move both runners ahead, giving Bowie two in scoring position for Davis. With the infield in, Davis grounded to Rhymes at second. On an errant throw passed catcher Dusty Ryan, Tucker scored the first run of the inning. On the same play with no one covering home, Boucher scored to put Bowie up 6-4 and Davis reached third. Danny Zell came in to get the final two outs of the inning.

Julio Manon came into the game in the top of the ninth and shut down the side in order for his 20th save of the season.

Castro (1-2) took the loss for the SeaWolves. He tossed two scoreless innings prior to giving up a pair in the eighth. It was his first outing since rejoining the ‘Wolves from Class-A Lakeland.

Kown took the no-decision for Erie. He worked one-plus innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Kown left the game in the bottom of the second due to an injury.

Juan Cedeno was stellar in relief of Kown, tossing four scoreless innings allowing just two hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

For the second straight night, a big eighth inning by the Bowie Baysox sent Erie to a 6-4 loss at Prince George’s Stadium.

The Baysox grabbed a lead against Erie starter Ben Fritz in the bottom of the third inning. Jonathon Tucker led off with a walk and got to second on a wild pitch. Nolan Reimold doubled down the left field line, scoring Tucker for a 1-0 Bowie lead. With two outs, Ryan Finan doubled home Reimold for a 2-0 lead.

Erie responded against Bowie starter Jason Berken in the top of the fourth. Kody Kirkland reached on an error to start the inning. A single by Jeff Frazier put runners on the corners for Ryan Roberson. Roberson singled home Kirkland to make it a 2-1 game. The RBI for Roberson was his team-leading 44th. He has also hit safely in 26 of his last 28 games. Pedro Cotto followed with a single to left to load the bases for Dusty Ryan. On the first pitch of his at bat, Ryan doubled home Frazier and Roberson to put Erie ahead 3-2.

The ‘Wolves added to their lead in the top of the seventh against reliever Ryan Keefer. Shawn Roof doubled off the wall in right with one out. Will Rhymes followed with a bloop single in-between three Bowie fielders. On the play, Roof hustled home from second to give Erie a 4-2 advantage.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth inning. Reimold led off with his third hit of the game. It was an infield single with a bang-bang play at first where Reimold was called safe. The play resulted in the ejection of Tom Brookens. Reliever Brendan Wise who tossed a scoreless sixth was lifted after the leadoff single and Danny Zell entered. Matt Weiters singled to put runners on first and second with no outs for Finan. Finan laid down a sacrifice bunt and on an errant throw by Kirkland at third, all three runners would reach safely. Pinch-hitter Steve Torrealba connected on a grand slam, putting the Baysox ahead 6-4.

Julio Manon shut the door in the ninth to pick up his 21st save and second in as many nights.

Fritz took the no-decision for Erie going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The SeaWolves dropped their third straight game to the Bowie Baysox on Sunday night by a score of 7-3 at Prince George’s Stadium.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second against former SeaWolf, Randor Bierd, who was with the Baysox on Major League rehab. Ryan Roberson led off with a single and was doubled home by Kody Kirkland for a 1-0 lead. Roberson has now hit safely in 27 of his last 29 games. Kirkland advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jeff Kunkel single to right to put the ‘Wolves ahead 2-0.

Bowie would respond in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Danny Christensen. Matt Wieters led off with a single and with one out Steve Torrealba walked to put a pair on for Carlos Rojas. Rojas singled to load the bases for Blake Davis. Davis grounded a ball off the bag at first, scoring Wieters from third, cutting the Erie lead down to a run at 2-1. Roberson retired the runner at first for the second out of the inning. Travis Brown then walked to load the bases for Mike Rodriguez. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Torrealba, tying the game at 2-2.

Bowie would take the lead in the bottom of the third. Nolan Reimold led off with a double and he scored with one out on a double by Torrealba, giving Bowie a 3-2 lead.

The Baysox would go ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Wieters connected on his second home run of the season over the wall in right field.

Erie cut into the lead in the top of the sixth against Brad Bergesen. Dusty Ryan singled with one out. Pedro Cotto and Roberson followed with singles to load the bases for Kirkland. Kirkland hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ryan, making it a one-run game at 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Baysox would put the game out of reach. Rodriguez singed and was balked over to second by reliever Matt Rusch. With one out, Reimold doubled home Rodriguez for a 5-3 Bowie lead. Weiters was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play. Brian Peterson flew out for the second out but Torrealba came through once again has he doubled down the left field line, scoring Reimold for a 6-3 Bowie lead. Rojas capped off the night’s scoring when he singled home Wieters for a 7-3 lead.

Bergesen, the scheduled starter for Bowie, came into the game in relief of Beird and allowed one run in seven-plus innings of work en route to picking up his 10th win of the season.

Christensen (5-7) went six-plus innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts. It was the second consecutive loss for Christensen.

The SeaWolves offensive woes continued on Monday night as they were swept by the Bowie Baysox with a 4-3 final at Prince George’s Stadium.

The SeaWolves struck first against Bowie starter David Hernandez in the top of the second. Ryan Roberson led off with a walk and he stole second base with Pedro Cotto batting. The steal was Roberson’s sixth of the season. Cotto blooped a single into right, scoring Roberson from second, giving Erie a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox tied the game against Luke French in the bottom of the second. Nolan Reimold led off, singled and stole second. Reimold moved over to third on a one-out single by Jeff Nettles and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Rojas, tying the game at 1-1.

Erie regained the lead in the top of the third. Wilkin Ramirez walked with two outs. With Roberson batting, Ramirez stole second and moved to third on an error by catcher Matt Wieters. Ramriez scored on a wild pitch to put Erie back up 2-1.

The ‘Wolves added to the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Casper Wells led off and slammed his third home run of the season to put Erie ahead 3-1.

The Baysox struck back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Torrealba led off with a solo home run over the wall in left to cut the Erie lead down to a run at 3-2. Rojas walked and Blake Davis singled to put a pair on for Travis Brown with no outs. French got Brown to fly out for the first out of the inning. Mike Rodriguez followed, grounding a ball to first base and on an error by Roberson, Rojas scored to tie the game at 3-3. On the play Davis also advanced to third and he would score on a sacrifice fly by Lou Montanez to give Bowie a 4-3 lead. Two of the three runs went unearned against French.

The Baysox bullpen, Felix Romero, Gerardo Casadiego and Julio Manon limited the ‘Wolves to just one hit over the final 4.2 innings of the game. Manon tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his third save of the series and 22nd of the season.

French went six solid innings despite taking the loss for the ‘Wolves, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and a season-high six strikeouts. The loss drops French to 5-9 on the season and he has dropped two straight.

SeaWolves All-Star Catcher Dusty Ryan has been selected as one of six participants for the 2008 Irving Oil Home Run Derby at the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game!

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, today announced the six participants for the 2008 Irving Oil Home Run Derby, scheduled to begin at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 16 as part of the festivities surrounding the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats outfielder Travis Snider will be joined by fellow Northern Division All-Stars Luke Hughes, a third baseman for the New Britain Rock Cats, and Nick Evans, a first baseman for the Binghamton Mets. The Southern Division All-Star representatives include two members of the Bowie Baysox outfielder Lou Montanez and third baseman Jeff Nettles and Erie SeaWolves catcher Dusty Ryan.

Six lucky fans who entered the Irving Oil Home Run Derby contest at Fisher Cats' home games this season will be randomly paired with the six Home Run Derby participants. Irving Oil will present the winner of the Home Run Derby with a $1,000 grand prize, and the fan teamed with the Home Run Derby Champion will receive a $500 Irving Oil gas card. The runner-up in the competition will receive a $500 prize, and the fan paired with him gets a $250 Irving Oil gas card.

"The Irving Oil Home Run Derby will offer our fans the chance to see some of the league's top sluggers battle it out as a thrilling prelude to the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game," said Fisher Cats President/General Manager Rick Brenner. "The excitement should be ratcheted up by the financial benefits provided by our partners at Irving Oil."

The first two rounds of the 2008 Irving Oil Home Run Derby are scheduled to begin at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 16 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The finals will be held during a stoppage in play during the middle of the second inning of the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game later that night.

Snider, 20, is tied for the club lead in home runs (11) and leads the active roster with 47 RBI despite not being promoted to the Fisher Cats until April 21. The Everett, WA native is ranked the Blue Jays' number-one prospect by Baseball America.

Hughes, 23, is tied for third in the Eastern League in home runs (15), ranks first in slugging percentage (.605) and is third in the league in batting (.332). The Australia native will also represent the Eastern League in the MLB XM Satellite Radio Futures Game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, July 13.

Evans, 22, is tied for fifth in the Eastern League in home runs (14), ranks second in slugging percentage (.562) and is tied for fourth in RBI (53). The Glendale, CA native made his Major League debut on May 24 with the New York Mets, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Evans played nine games with New York before returning to Binghamton.

Montanez, 26, leads the Eastern League in home runs (18), hits (108), extra-base hits (43) and runs (61), and his 60 RBI rank third in the EL. The Puerto Rico native was the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 26.

Nettles, 29, rates second in the Eastern League in home runs (16). The Englewood, NJ native has 51 RBI and a .460 slugging percentage.

Ryan, 23, leads all active Eastern League catchers in home runs (13), slugging percentage (.514) and OPS (.879). The Merced, CA native is batting .270.

Errors Lead To Reading Win Over Erie

The SeaWolves dropped their fifth straight game on Tuesday night, falling in the series opener to the Reading Phillies by a score of 6-3. The loss is the fifth straight for the ‘Wolves.

The Phillies struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Josh Rainwater. Neil Sellers led off the inning, got ahead in the count, and connected on his 12th home run of the season over the wall in left for a 1-0 Reading lead.

Reading would add a run in the bottom of the third. Michael Spidale led off with a walk. With two outs, Spidale stole second and got to third on a throwing error. He scored on a single by Lou Marson for a 2-0 R-Phils lead.

The ‘Wolves made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth. Wilkin Ramirez led off and tripled for the seventh time off the wall in center. Ramirez would score on a Dusty Ryan groundout to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Reading.

Reading would take a three-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jason Donald reached on a fielder’s choice and Brad Harman singled with two outs. Lou Marson followed and lined a ball through the legs of Kody Kirkland at third allowing two runners to score to make it 4-1.

The SeaWolves cut into the Reading lead in the top of the eighth against reliever Pat Overholt. Casper Wells led off with a single and Shawn Roof walked to put a pair on base for the top of the lineup. A passed ball with Will Rhymes batting moved the runners to second and third. Rhymes hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Wells to make it a 4-2 game. With two outs, Ryan singled to left, scoring Roof, cutting the Reading lead down to a run at 4-3.

The one-run would be as close as the ‘Wolves would get as the Phillies would pad their lead in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Marcelo Perez. Jeremy Slayden led off with a single and Sellers followed with his second home run of the game. The two-run blast would put Reading ahead 6-3.

The SeaWolves would get two on base in the ninth inning against Overholt on walks but Sam Walls came into the game to strikeout the final three Erie batters to pick up his fifth save.

Rainwater (6-4) took the loss for Erie despite putting together another solid outing. He went 6.2 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on five this with four walks and a strikeout.

The ‘Wolves have now dropped eight of their last nine games.

The SeaWolves snapped a five-game losing skid at First Energy Stadium on Wednesday night with a 6-1 win over the Reading Phillies. The 'Wolves were paced by a strong starting pitching performance from Juan Cedeno and clutch hitting.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the third inning against Reading starter Tyson Brummett. Shawn Roof led off and blooped a single to right. Roof stole second and got to third on a Will Rhymes groundout. Wilkin Ramirez followed and grounded home Roof for a 1-0 Erie advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the ‘Wolves would add to their lead. Ryan Roberson and Jeff Frazier drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Pedro Cotto laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the runners in scoring position for Casper Wells. Wells grounded to short and on an error by Jason Donald, reached safely at first base. Also on the play, Roberson scored and Frazier advanced to third. Roof then grounded home Frazier for a 3-0 Erie lead.

Erie added another run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Dusty Ryan slammed his team-leading 14th home run to the deepest part of the park, over the wall in center, putting Erie ahead 4-0. The home run also gave Ryan his 45th RBI which also leads the club.

The SeaWolves would add two more runs in the top of the ninth inning against reliever Brett Harker. Wells walked to start the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Roof. Will Rhymes singled to right, scoring Wells, putting the ‘Wolves ahead 5-0. With two outs, Ryan walked to put two on for Deik Scram. Scram singled to right, scoring Rhymes as the ‘Wolves built a 6-0 lead.

The Phillies would get their lone run in the bottom of the ninth. Neil Sellers singled with one out against reliever Matt Rusch. A single by Mike Eylward put two on for Clay Harris. Harris grounded to short, Roof stepped on second for the second out, but an errant throw to first allowed Sellers to score to make it 6-1. Rusch would get Michael Spidale to fly out for the final out of the game.

Cedeno fell one out shy of picking up a decision. He worked 4.2 scoreless, allowing four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Cedeno lowered his ERA down to 2.61. He has now gone 19.1 straight innings without allowing a run.

Angel Castro (2-2) picked up the win for the ‘Wolves tossing 2.2 scoreless, allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Erie and Reading put on an offensive clinic at First Energy Stadium on Thursday night with the Phillies edging the SeaWolves 14-10.

The Phillies would take a commanding lead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Lauren Gagnier. Luke Appert led off with a walk, Jason Donald and Greg Golson both singled to load the bases. Lou Marson hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Appert, giving Reading a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Slayden walked to reload the bases for Neil Sellers. Sellers singled home a pair for a 3-0 Reading lead. Later in the inning, a catchers interference with the Clay Harris batting drove home the fourth Reading run. Jake Blalock followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home the fifth run. Appert, in his second plate appearance of the inning, drove home Brad Harman to make it 6-0 R-Phils. Reading capped off the inning with a three-run home run from Donald to make it 9-0.

The SeaWolves got on the board against Reading starter Edgar Garcia in the top of the second when Ryan Roberson connected on a monster home run over the wall in left to make it a 9-1 game. The home run for Roberson ties him with Dusty Ryan with 14 for the team lead.

The ‘Wolves again cut into the lead once again in the top of the third. Shawn Roof walked and Will Rhymes singled, both with one out. Wilkin Ramirez stepped in and clubbed his 13th home run of the season over the wall in center to make it a 9-4 game in favor of Reading.

The R-Phils would go back ahead by six in the bottom of the third inning. Blalock doubled with one out and scored on an Appert single to make it 10-4.

Erie again played long ball in the top of the fifth inning as they cut the Reading lead down to five at 11-7. Roof led off with a walk and Ramirez walked with one out. With two outs, Roberson connected on his second home run of the game. The three-run home run was his 15th of the season. It was the second two-home run game for Roberson this season. His first was on April 18 at Altoona.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Phillies would strike for three more runs against reliever Marcelo Perez. Appert walked and Donald singled both with one out to put two on for Golson. Golson connected on his eighth home run of the season to put Reading ahead 14-7.

The ‘Wolves responded once again in the top of the sixth. Jeff Kunkel led off with a single, Casper Wells was hit by a pitch and Roof walked to load the bases. With one out, Ramirez lined a single to the gap in left-center, plating Kunkel and Wells to make it a 14-9 game in favor of the Phils.

In the top of the eighth, Ramirez reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs for Deik Scram. Scram doubled off the wall in right, scoring Ramirez from first, cutting the Reading lead down to four at 14-10. That would be as close as Erie would get as they went down in order in the ninth, falling by four runs.

The SeaWolves built a 5-1 lead on the Altoona Curve after two innings on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park, but fell by a final score of 10-8. The loss was the second straight for the Howlers.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead of Altoona starter Derek Hankins in the bottom of the first inning. Will Rhymes and Wilkin Ramirez connected on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Ryan Roberson singled home Rhymes for a 1-0 Erie lead. Deik Scram followed with a walk to load the bases. Dusty Ryan stepped in and hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Ramirez for a 2-0 Erie advantage. Jeff Frazier then singled home Roberson to make it 3-0 ‘Wolves. Erie capped off a four-run first when Casper Wells singled home Scram for a 4-0 lead.

Altoona got on the board in the top of the second when Anthony Webster connected on a one-out solo home run, his fifth, to make it a 4-1 game.

Erie would go ahead by four once again in the bottom of the second. Roberson doubled and was doubled home by Scram to put the ‘Wolves ahead 5-1.

Altoona would battle back to tie the game in the top of the third. Jason Bowers led off and reach on an error by Shawn Roof at short. Melvin Dorta followed with a two-run home run, his fifth, to make it a 5-3 game in favor of Erie. With one out, Jonel Pacheco and Brad Corley connected on back-to-back singles. Jason Delaney doubled home Pacheco to make it a one-run game at 5-4. Webster singled home Corley, tying the game at 5-5.

The SeaWolves regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 6-5 lead. Rhymes led off with his fifth triple of the season and he scored on a Ramirez groundout.

The lead, however, would be short lived as Altoona would take their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Webster singled and got to second on an error with one out and he was brought home on a two-run home run by Luis Cruz for a 7-6 Curve advantage.

The Curve would go ahead by a pair in the top of the sixth against reliever Angel Castro. Miguel Perez singled with one out and he scored with two outs on Webster’s fourth hit of the game for an 8-6 lead over the ‘Wolves.

Altoona took a 9-6 lead in the top of the eighth. Bowers walked against reliever Matt Rusch with one out. He was tripled home by Dorta with his fourth hit of the game.

Erie would cut the Altoona lead down to a pair in the bottom of the eighth when Ramirez stepped in with two outs and crushed his 14th home run of the season to make it a 9-7 game. Ramirez has now homered in back-to-back games and has seven RBI in the last two.

Altoona again would strike in the top of the ninth against Casey Fien. Bowers doubled with one out and scored on Dorta’s fifth hit of the night for a 10-7 Curve lead.

The ‘Wolves would make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Ronald Belisario. With two outs, Frazier doubled for his fourth hit of the game and Kody Kirkland singled to bring the tying run to the plate in Wells. Wells roped a single down the right field line, scoring Frazier, cutting the Altoona lead down to a pair at 10-8. Pinch hitter Pedro Cotto lined out to left to end the game.

Fritz (2-5) took the loss for the ‘Wolves going five innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Saturday night's Erie SeaWolves game against the Altoona Curve has been suspended due to inclement weather in the bottom of the third inning with the SeaWolves ahead 5-4.

The two clubs will now play a doubleheader on Sunday, July 13 beginning at 1:05 p.m. Game one will be the conclusion of the Saturday’s game and will be a nine-inning affair. Game two will be a seven-inning ballgame, following 30 minutes upon the conclusion of game one.

All tickets from Saturday night’s game can be redeemed for any remaining game during the 2008 season. The SeaWolves box office is open on all game days and on non-game days, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The SeaWolves downed Altoona in the completion of a suspended game on Sunday by a score of 12-11. The win snapped Erie's two game losing slide.

The Curve struck first against Erie starter Danny Christensen in the top of the second inning. Brad Corley and Jason Delaney both singled to start the inning. Steve Lerud followed with an RBI single, scoring Corley, giving Altoona 1-0 lead. Luis Cruz doubled home Delaney for a 2-0 Curve advantage. With runners on second and third, Jason Bowers grounded out, scoring Lerud for a 3-0 lead. Miguel Perez followed Altoona’s fifth hit of the inning, and RBI single, scoring Cruz for a 4-0 lead.

The ‘Wolves responded in the bottom of the second against Altoona starter Luis Munoz. Ryan Roberson and Deik Scram connected on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Dusty Ryan hit into a fielder’s choice and Scram would be retired at second, giving the ‘Wolves runners on the corners for Pedro Cotto. Cotto lined a single to right, scoring Roberson, cutting the Altoona lead down to three at 4-1. Casper Wells grounded into a fielder’s choice, beating out a throw a first, scoring Ryan to make it 4-2. After a Shawn Roof single, Will Rhymes singled home Wells to make it 4-3 in favor of the Curve.

Erie would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Roberson led off with his second single of the game. Deik Scram followed with two-run home run off of the scoreboard in right center to put the ‘Wolves ahead 5-4. The home run for Scram was his sixth of the season and his first since June 8 at New Hampshire. Ryan then doubled and got to third on a wild pitch. Cotto few out for the first out of the inning bringing Wells to the plate. Wells walked and stole second with Roof batting to give Erie second and third with one out. Rain then became an issue and with the count 0-2 on Roof, the tarp was put onto the field.

Action resumed on Sunday afternoon in the bottom of the third. Roof grounded out to short, scoring Ryan for a 6-4 lead. Rhymes followed with a walk. With runners on the corners and Louis Ott batting, the ‘Wolves executed a perfect double steal. Rhymes got to second and Wells stole home to make it 7-4. Later in the inning, Frazier singled home Rhymes for an 8-4 Erie lead.

Erie would add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning against Josh Hill. With two outs, Cotto walked and Wells singled to put runners on first and second. Roof followed with his second hit of the game, an RBI single, scoring Cotto for a 9-4 Erie lead.

Altoona struck for a run in the top of the sixth inning against Juan Cedeno. Brad Corley led off with his ninth home run of the season to make it a 9-5 game. The run broke a 22.1 consecutive scoreless innings streak for Cedeno.

The Curve again cut into the lead in the top of the seventh. Perez and Dorta led off with singles. James Boone walked to load the bases with no outs. Anthony Webster grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Perez, making it a 9-6 game in favor of the ‘Wolves. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Corley scored Dorta to make it 9-7.

The ‘Wolves went back up by four in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Rhymes and Ott both walked and Hill would be lifted for reliever Dave Davidson. Davidson induced a ground ball from Frazier and Ott would be retired at second for the second out. In stepped Roberson and he slammed his third hit of the game, a two-run double to the gap in right center, putting Erie up 11-7. Roberson leads the ‘Wolves with 51 RBI.

Altoona continued to chip away, scoring runs in three straight to cut it to a one-run game in the top of the eighth. Lerud and Cruz led off with back-to-back singles. Erie would made a call to the bullpen to bring in Brendan Wise. Wise recorded the next two outs, but gave up a two-run double to Dorta to make it 11-9. Danny Zell came in and gave up a bloop double to Boone, scoring Dorta, making it 11-10 Erie.

Erie would add a much need insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Wells walked with two outs, stole second for his third steal of the game, and got to third on an error. He would later score with the bases loaded on an infield single by Louis Ott to make it 12-10 ‘Wolves.

In the top of the ninth against Matt Rusch, Delaney walked with one out. Lerud grounded to second and on an errant throw by Rhymes into the seats, both runners reached safely and advanced to second and third. A walk to Cruz loaded the bases for Bowers. Bowers singled to make it a 12-10 game in favor of Erie. Rusch struck out Perez for the second out and induced a groudout deep in the hole at short off the bat of Dorta to end the game. Rusch picked up his second save of the season.

The SeaWolves could not complete a doubleheader sweep on Sunday as they fell in game two to the Altoona Curve by a count of 4-2 at Jerry Uht Park.

The Curve broke a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning against Erie starter Luke French. Brad Corley walked with two outs and Jason Delaney followed with a two-run home run to right field to put the Curve ahead 2-0.

Altoona would take the lead by four runs in the top of the fifth. Once again with two outs, Miguel Perez and Melvin Dorta connected on back-to-back singles. James Boone then doubled to center, scoring both runners, giving the Curve a 4-0 lead.

The ‘Wolves responded in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Will Rhymes and Kody Kirkland singled bringing Ryan Roberson to the plate. Roberson, who already doubled in the game, connected on a two-run double to make it 4-2 in favor of the Curve. Erie, however, would get no closer, falling by that score.

French (5-10) took the loss despite tossing a complete game. It was his second complete game of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. French struck out three while walking a pair.

The loss gave the Curve a season-series victory over the ‘Wolves.

Erie SeaWolves first baseman Ryan Roberson has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 13th.

The 24-year old had an outstanding week for the SeaWolves, hitting .444 (12-for-27) with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored, four walks, one stolen base and a .815 slugging percentage over seven games.

Roberson, a native of Silver Spring, Maryland, finished the week with four consecutive multiple hit games, including a two home run performance at Reading last Thursday night. The 6’5”, 240 lb. slugger is currently tied for third in the league in homers (15), ranked seventh in slugging percentage (.507) and tied for eighth in RBI (53). Ryan, who has been named to the Southern Division roster for the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental All-Star Game in Manchester, New Hampshire on July 16th, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 30th round of the 2005 draft after hitting .423 with 16 home runs during his senior season at George Washington University.

Roberson has also hit safely in 33 of his last 36 games and he leads the SeaWolves with 53 RBI.

The SeaWolves fell in the final game before the Eastern League All-Star break to the Altoona Curve by a score of 2-1.

Altoona took the lead against starting pitcher Eddie Bonine in the top of the fourth inning. Steve Lerud lined an infield single off the shin of Bonine with two outs. Luis Cruz followed with a double off the wall in left-center, scoring Lerud from first, putting the Curve ahead 1-0. Cruz ended up on third following a throwing error by Jeff Frazier in left. Bonine then hit Jason Bowers with a pitch on the shoulder and was forced to exit the game with the injury. In came Marcelo Perez with runners on the corners and two outs. Perez threw over to first and threw the ball into the dirt passed Ryan Roberson. The ball squirted to the wall allowing Cruz to score from third.

The ‘Wolves lone run came in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Jeff Seus. Frazier led off with a walk and Dusty Ryan doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring Frazier from first, making it 2-1 in favor of the Curve.

Erie was stymied in the final two innings, down a run by relievers Josh Shortslef and Ronald Belisario (S-2).

Bonine took the loss for the ‘Wolves. He went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Marcelo Perez and Angel Castro tossed the final 5.1 innings of the game and combined to shutout Altoona, allowing just one hit with no walks and a combined seven strikeouts.

The loss dropped the SeaWolves to 0-10 on Monday’s.

It was an all to familiar situation for the Erie SeaWolves Thursday night in Canal Park… but that all changed with one swing of the bat.

It was the top of the eighth inning and the ‘Wolves were down by three. Akron elected to bring in relief pitcher Tony Sipp. Sipp allowed the first three batters to reach base, giving up two singles and issuing one walk. That’s when Casper Wells stepped up to the plate. On the night Wells was already 3-for-3 with three doubles and a run scored. But that was nothing compared to his eight-inning at-bat. Down in the count 1-2, Wells pulled a Sipp fastball to left-center for a game-changing grand slam. With the home run the ‘Wolves led by a score of 6-5.

Erie would add another run in the top of the ninth inning thanks to three consecutive two out singles, the final coming off of Kody Kirkland’s bat to give Erie an insurance run and a 7-5 lead.

Two runs would be all closer Casey Fien would need as he faced only four batters in the ninth to record his tenth save of the season.

Deik Scram also contributed to the victory, smashing a solo home run in the third inning and hitting an RBI single in the fourth.

The win went to SeaWolves reliever Brendan Wise. Wise picked up his second win of the season tossing 2.1 innings while only giving up one hit and striking out three.

With the win the ‘Wolves improved to 40-58 on the year and the Aeros dropped to 61-35.

The four-game set continues tomorrow night as Erie RHP Lauren Gagnier (0-1; 108.00 ERA) faces LHP Ryan Edell (5-5; 4.30 ERA) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The SeaWolves won their second consecutive game on Friday night against the Akron Aeros by a final of 3-1 at Canal Park.

The SeaWolves struck first against Akron starter Ryan Edell, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Shawn Roof led off with a double off the wall in right field to put a man in scoring position. With one out, Casper Wells lined a single to center, scoring Roof, giving the ‘Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Erie extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. Deik Scram led off with a walk. Scram moved over to third on a ground ball by Santo De Leon with the help of an error by the Akron third baseman Wes Hodges. Pedro Cotto followed with a base knock, scoring Scram for the second Erie run of the contest.

The Aeros got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Erie starter Lauren Gagnier. Brandon Chaves led off the inning with a walk and the stole second. Chaves moved over to third on a flyout by Trevor Crowe and he scored on a Josh Rodriguez groundout to make it 2-1 in favor of the ‘Wolves.

Erie would add to the lead in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Reid Santos. Wells walked with two outs setting up Dusty Ryan. Ryan fell behind in the count 1-2 and rocketed two deep foul balls. He then hammered a double off the wall in left field, scoring Wells from first, giving the ‘Wolves a 3-1 advantage.

Lefty Juan Cedeno came into the game to replace Gagnier in the seventh inning with a man on first base. Cedeno went on to retire the final three of the seventh and got out of the eighth with a 3-1 lead and no damage.

Casey Fien came into the game in the ninth inning and retired the Aeros in order to pick up his 11th save of the season and his second in as many nights.

Gagnier (1-1) picked up his first Erie win. He went six-plus innings, allowing a run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The SeaWolves two-game win streak came to a halt on Saturday night at Canal Park at the hands of the Akron Aeros by a count of 7-2.

The Aeros struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Danny Christensen. Trevor Crowe led off with a single. Crowe then stole second and third and scored on a Matt LaPorta sacrifice fly to center, giving Akron a 1-0 lead.

Akron would add to the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Wes Hodges led off and reached on an error by third baseman Santo De Leon. With one out, Wyatt Toregas clubbed his ninth home run of the season to put Akron ahead 3-0. Toregas has now homered five times against the ‘Wolves this season. Stephen Head followed with a single and Ryan Goleski walked to put two on for the nine-hitter Brandon Pinckney. Pinckney singled home Head for a 4-0 lead. Goleski would later score on a fielder’s choice by Crowe to put Akron ahead 5-0.

The ‘Wolves would get on the board in the top of the fifth against Fausto Carmona. Shawn Roof singled with two outs. Roof moved over to second on a single by Will Rhymes. Casper Wells then extended his season-long hitting streak to seven consecutive games with an RBI single, scoring Roof to make it 5-1.

Akron would add runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 7-1 lead. In the sixth, Toregas scored on a double play and in the eighth, Head singled home Bronson Sardinha.

Erie was able to muster one final run in the top of the ninth. Santo De Leon led off with a double down the left field line and he would score on Rhymes third hit of the game with two outs to make it a 7-2 game in favor of the Aeros.

Carmona, with the Aeros on Major League rehab, picked up the win going five innings, allowing a run on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Christensen took the loss for the Howlers, dropping his record to 5-8. He went four innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
