'Wolves Battle But Fall In Bottom of the Ninth

July 28, 2008

The SeaWolves fell on Monday night on a walkoff home run in the series opener at Canal Park against the Akron Aeros by a score of 8-7.

The Aeros struck first against Erie spot starter Juan Cedeno in the top of the first inning. Josh Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and Bronson Sardinha singled to put a pair on for Wes Hodges. Hodges lined a double down the left field line, scoring both baserunners, giving Akron a 2-0 lead. Stephen Head, with one out, doubled home Hodges for a 3-0 lead. Wyatt Toregas followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Ryan Goleski. Goleski connected on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Head for a 4-0 lead.

The SeaWolves would get on the board in the top of the third inning against Akron starter Ryan Edell. Santo De Leon led off and connected on a solo home run, his second, over the wall in left to make it a 4-1 game. The hit was Erie’s first of the game and for De Leon, it was his second home run at Canal Park.

Akron would go back ahead by four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hodges doubled for the second time with one out and was doubled home by Matt Whitney for a 5-1 Akron advantage. Whitney would be the last batter Cedeno faced in the game as reliever Rudy Darrow came in to get the final two outs of the inning. Darrow would retire all eight batters he faced in the game in his Double-A debut.

The ‘Wolves cut the lead in the sixth down to three runs when, with two outs, Casper Wells connected on a solo home run, his sixth, to make it a 5-2 game.

In the top of the seventh, the Aeros went to the bullpen to get reliever Reid Santos. Jeff Frazier led off and was hit by a pitch. Ryan Roberson singled and Dusty Ryan walked to load the bases. Deik Scram flew out for the first out of the inning. De Leon came in and doubled passed Hodges at third, down the left field line. Frazier and Roberson scored to make it a one-run game at 5-4. With runners on second and third, Caonabo Cosme, in his first game since returning from the disabled list, grounded home Ryan, tying the game at 5-5.

Akron regained the lead against reliever Ben Fritz in the bottom of the seventh. Whitney led off with a single and Head homered to right to make it 7-5. The home run for Head was his ninth of the year and his fourth against Erie.

The ‘Wolves again tied the game in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Frazier lined a single up the middle bringing Roberson to the plate. Roberson connected on a two-run, opposite field home run, his 19th, making it a 7-7 game.

The Aeros would win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Brendan Wise (2-1) when Hodges led off and connected on a line drive home run over the wall in left. The home run was the 12th of the season for Hodges and it gave Akron the 8-7 win.

The loss drops Erie to 7-9 against Akron and to 0-12 in Monday games.

WELLS HITS FOR CYCLE IN 'WOLVES WIN!

July 29, 2008

A night after falling on a walk-off home run, the ‘Wolves produced some magic of their own in an 11-5 win over the Akron Aeros. Erie not only notched a season-high 18 hits but center fielder Casper Wells hit for the cycle.

Dusty Ryan followed with a liner over the centerfielder Jose Constanza’s head that resulted in an RBI triple, putting the ‘Wolves back ahead by three runs at 5-2. De Lon followed with his second hit of the game, a single up the middle scoring Ryan from third for a 6-2 lead. With two outs, Rhymes walked to put a pair on for Wells. The Aeros got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Whitney singled with two outs and was brought home on a Wyatt Toregas two-run home run, his 11th, making it a 9-4 game in favor of the ‘Wolves. Toregas has hit six home runs against the SeaWolves this season.

In the top of the seventh, Erie added a 10th run for a 10-4 lead. Rhymes led off with a triple to the wall in right-center for his fourth hit of the game. The triple was his sixth. Wells brought home Rhymes on a double down the left field line for his third hit of the game.

Akron cut the Erie lead down to five runs at 10-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Whitney connected on a solo home run to center, his 10th.

With one out, Rhymes grounded out to second finishing the day 4-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. Wells then stood in and clobbered his seventh home run of the season over the wall in left, hitting for the cycle, giving Erie an 11-5 lead. Christensen took a no-decision for Erie going six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts. It was the second straight quality start for Christensen, only to get a no-decision.

Akron’s starter Lewis was equally as impressive in a no-decision. He went six innings, allowing am unearned run on five hits with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. Lewis remains 0-5 with four no-decisions in nine career starts against the ‘Wolves.

The game would head into the 10th inning. With one out in the top of the 10th, Dusty Ryan, who had been 0-for-4 in the game, connected on a solo home run on a 3-2 pitch, over the wall in left, putting the ‘Wolves back up by a score of 4-3. The home run for Ryan was his 15th and his first since July 9 at Reading.

Moscoso Dazzles as ‘Wolves Sweep Phils

August 3, 2008

Guillermo Moscoso starred in the Double-A debut as the SeaWolves completed a three-game series sweep of the Reading Phillies by a score of 4-3.

The SeaWolves racked up all four of their runs in the bottom of the first inning against Reading starter Fabio Castro. Will Rhymes led off with a double and he was tripled home on Casper Wells third triple of the season to put Erie ahead 1-0. Wilkin Ramirez followed with a walk and he stole second for his 21st steal of the season. Jeff Frazier stepped in and clubbed a two-run double to the right field gap to put the ‘Wolves up 3-0. Santo De Leon singled to put runners on the corners for Pedro Cotto. The base knock extended De Leon’s season-best hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. Cotto grounded home Frazier for a 4-0 lead.

Moscoso retired the first six hitters he faced en route to a win in his first Erie start. He faced one over the minimum through the first five innings of the game.

In the top of the sixth, Kevin Nelson walked to lead off the inning. With two outs, Greg Golson singled to right and on a Cotto error, the ball reached the wall, allowing Nelson to score from first to make it a 4-1 game.

The score would remain the same until the top of the ninth against reliever Brendan Wise. Jeremy Slayden walked and Neil Sellers singled putting two on base bringing the tying run in Mike Eylward to the plate. Eylward singled home Slayden to make it a 4-2 game. With one out, pinch-hitter Luke Appert singled home Sellers to close the gap to a run at 4-3. Erie would make a second call to the pen, bringing in Rudy Darrow. Moscoso (1-0) worked six innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. The 10 K’s tied a season-high and career-best for Moscoso. He struck out 10 on June 28 while playing with Lakeland against Daytona and on July 25, 2005, struck out 10 Aberdeen Ironbirds while playing with Oneonta.

Castro (8-2) settled down after the first inning and tossed the final seven scoreless in a complete game loss.

The sweep was the second of the year against Reading and the fourth series sweep of an opponent this season. Erie finished the home portion of the season series against the R-Phils 6-0 and they have won the season series with four game remaining.
