Notes: Brookens hired as Erie manager
Former Tigers infielder moves up to lead Double-A squad

DETROIT -- Tom Brookens' playing career ended in 1990, but he's rising through the Tigers farm system like a top prospect.

After guiding the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps to a Midwest League title in his first year there, the former Tigers player is headed to Double-A Erie, where he was named the SeaWolves' new manager on Friday.

The move fills the opening created when former SeaWolves manager Matt Walbeck, Baseball America's Minor League Manager of the Year, was hired as the new third-base coach for the Texas Rangers. It'll be a tough task, but Brookens already has experience succeeding Walbeck, having done it well at West Michigan last year.

Brookens is best known as a member of the Tigers' 1984 World Series champions, playing in 113 games as a versatile utility man. He spent 10 seasons in Detroit during his 12-year big league career. He acted upon his urge to get back into the professional ranks in 2005, when he took over as manager at short-season Class A Oneonta.

Working in his first professional coaching assignment, Brookens led the O-Tigers to the New York-Penn League title. After a second-place finish in 2006, Brookens earned a promotion to West Michigan, where Walbeck had managed the previous three seasons. Brookens not only added a Midwest League title to his resume, but he was also named the league's manager of the year.

When the Tigers had to decide how best to replace Walbeck at Erie, Brookens was the logical in-house candidate. One side benefit of the move is that it also brings Brookens closer to home. A native of Chambersburg, Pa., Brookens makes his home in Fayetteville, just west of Pittsburgh and about a two-hour drive down Interstate 79 from Erie.

The task of following up Brookens at West Michigan will fall upon someone from outside the organization. Joe DePastino takes over in his first professional managerial assignment following a 13-year catching career that included a brief Major League callup to the Mets in 2003.

The 2008 season opener for the Erie SeaWolves against the Bowie Baysox has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 beginning at 2:05 p.m.

It marks the second consecutive season in which the 'Wolves opening day has been postponed. In 2007 Erie's first three games against Altoona were postponed at Jerry Uht Park due to snow.

The new SeaWolves Opening Day is Friday at 7:05 p.m. Fans can tune in LIVE on Fox Sports Radio 1300 AM or right here at SeaWolves.com.

Frazier's career night lifts Erie to victory
Outfielder plates eventual winning runs on five-RBI night

Jeff Frazier is back with the organization that both drafted and traded him. He's off to a solid start in his second stint with the Detroit Tigers.

Frazier cleared the bases with a three-run double in the 11th inning on a career-high five-RBI night as the visiting Erie SeaWolves topped the Bowie Baysox, 8-3, on Friday.

With the score tied, Daniel Worth singled and Freddy Guzman's sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by pitcher Rommie Lewis Jr. Will Rhymes reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Frazier plated them all with a drive to center field.

Frazier, who went 4-for-6, had an RBI single in the first, ripped a solo homer in the third and singled in the ninth. The 26-year-old outfielder hit a combined .276 with eight homers, 31 doubles and 57 RBIs between Class A Advanced High Desert and Double-A West Tenn a year ago.

Frazier was Detroit's third-round pick in 2004 but was shipped to the Seattle Mariners in February 2007 for Yorman Bazardo. He was reacquired by the Tigers this offseason.

Guzman had two hits and scored twice while Deik Scram doubled twice for Erie (2-0).

Juan Cedeno (2-0) walked three and struck out two in two shutout innings for the win. SeaWolves starter Jonathan Connolly allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over six innings.

Bowie starter Chorye Spoone, yielded three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 frames in his Double-A debut. Lewis Jr. (0-1) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on five hits in one inning of work.

Jeff Nettles ripped a two-RBI double in the seventh for the Baysox (0-2).

'Wolves Improve to 2-0 in Extras



It took extra innings once again but the SeaWolves prevailed in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Prince George’s Stadium with a 3-2 win over the Bowie Baysox. The ‘Wolves are now 2-0 to start the 2008 season.

The ‘Wolves broke a scoreless game in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Freddy Guzman singled and got to second on a balk. Will Rhymes followed with an RBI double to the right field gap, putting the ‘Wolves ahead 1-0.

The Baysox tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Jonathan Tucker led off with a double and was doubled home by Mike Rodriguez to make it 1-1.

Erie answered right back in the top of the sixth inning when Wilkin Ramirez led off the inning with a towering home run off of reliever Kam Mickolio to make it 2-1 Erie.

Ben Fritz, making his first start in an Erie uniform, went six solid innings. He allowed a run on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts in taking a no-decision. Fritz is schedule to start the ‘Wolves home opener next Thursday against Binghamton.

Closer Brett Jensen attempted to shut the door in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a leadoff home run by Ryan Finan tied the ballgame at 2-2. Jensen battled out of the seventh as the Baysox stranded a runner on third to send the game to extras.

In the top of the ninth, the ‘Wolves were able to get the winning run across the plate without getting a hit off of reliever Daniel Lonsberry. Guzman drew a one out walk and on a sacrifice bunt by Rhymes, hustled to go from first to third. Jeff Frazier then came to the plate and on the first pitch, Lonsberry threw a wild pitch allowing Guzman to cross the plate, giving Erie a 3-2 lead.

Danny Zell came into the game and worked a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Josh Rainwater (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth inning for the ‘Wolves allowing a walk to pick up his first win of the season.

NOTES –
- Jeff Frazier (2-3, 2 BB) has collected a pair of multi-hit games to start the season.

Extra's Once More as Erie Improves to 3-0!



The SeaWolves and Baysox went to extra innings for the third straight game in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader at Prince George’s Stadium with Erie prevailing in 10 innings 9-6 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The ‘Wolves struck first in the second inning when Dusty Ryan connected on his first home run of the season. The solo-shot put Erie ahead 1-0.

The Baysox would then take their first lead of the series in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nolan Reimold singled to lead off the inning and with one out, Kenard Jones singled to put runners on the corners for Ryan Finan. Finan grounded to short but the ball was misplayed by Danny Worth, allowing Reimold to score, tying the game at 1-1. Zach Dillon followed with a two-run single, putting the Baysox ahead 3-1.

The SeaWolves battled back in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan led off the inning with a walk and Nick McIntyre single to put runners on the corners. McIntyre then stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. With one down, Freddy Guzman grounded home Ryan, making it a 3-2 game. Max Leon then singled to left to bring the tying run home. The Leon hit was the last the ‘Wolves would see until the top of the 10th.

Starting pitcher Luke French went six solid innings for the ‘Wolves allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout. He joins Jon Connolly and Ben Fritz all with quality starts in their first outings of the season with no-decisions.

In the top of the 10th against reliever Ryan Keefer, Jeff Frazier singled with one out for his second hit of the game. Wilkin Ramirez followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Ryan Roberson. Roberson flew out for the second out bringing Deik Scram to the dish. Scram worked the count full and drew a walk to load the bases for Max St. Pierre. St. Pierre, in his first at bat of the game, laced a bases clearing double down the right field line to put the ‘Wolves ahead 6-3. The Baysox then made a pitching change, bringing in the first baseman Finan in to pitch. Finan gave up back-to-back walks to Nick McIntyre and Worth. Guzman then connected on a three-run triple to put Erie ahead 9-3. Guzman finished the game with 4 RBI.

Reliever Anthony Tomey (1-0) picked up the win going three-plus innings allowing three runs on three hits. He shut the Baysox down until the bottom of the 10th. Casey Fien came in and recorded the final three outs to preserve a 9-6 Erie win.

GET THE BROOMS! 'Wolves Sweep Baysox

The SeaWolves remain unbeaten at 4-0 following an opening weekend series sweep of the Bowie Baysox with a 5-0 win on Sunday.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the top of the first inning 1-0. Will Rhymes connected on a one-out doubled and he scored on a Deik Scram double to put Erie on top. The ‘Wolves scored first in all four games of the Bowie series.

Erie added to the lead in the top of the fifth. Rhymes again doubled, this time with two outs and would score on Scram’s second hit of the game, an RBI single, for a 2-0 ‘Wolves advantage.

Starting pitcher Andrew Kown (1-0) tossed a gem and made it four consecutive quality starts for SeaWolves starters to begin the season. Kown went six innings allowing just three hits. He walked one and struck out three in becoming the first Erie starter to pick up a win on the young season.

The ‘Wolves would add three insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning. Rhymes came up big once more when he tripled with one out. Rhymes scored on a Jeff Frazier RBI double for a 3-0 Erie lead. Frazier now leads the club with six RBI. With Frazier on second with two outs, Wilkin Ramirez slammed his second home run of the season off the foul pole in left field. The two-run shot gave Erie a 5-0 lead.

Two relievers, Casey Fien and Danny Zell tossed the final three innings of the game each allowing one hit with no walk to preserve the win.

'Wolves Fall for First Time in 2008

The SeaWolves fell victim to the Harrisburg Senators, the top hitting team in the league on Monday night 12-5.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the third inning against Marco Estrada. Max Leon led off the inning and drew a walk. Danny Worth came to the plate and singled with one out to put a pair on for the top of the lineup. Freddy Guzman was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Will Rhymes. Rhymes stepped in and was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the at bat to put the ‘Wolves ahead 1-0. Jeff Frazier followed by grounding out to short, scoring Worth for a 2-0 Erie advantage. Deik Scram then singled home Guzman for a 3-0 ‘Wolves lead.

The Senators tied the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Maxwell led off with a single and Jorge Padilla walked to put a pair on with no outs. Following a Luis Jimenez strikeout, Yurendell de Caster connected on an opposite field three-run home run, making it a 3-3 game.

The Senators would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ian Desmond led off and connected on an opposite field solo home run. The home run was his first of the season and it gave the Sens a 4-3 lead.

Harrisburg would remain ahead by one until they opened up a nine-run lead in the bottom of the seventh. Roger Bernadina, Ed Rogers and Maxwell each singled to load the bases against reliever Matt Rusch. Rusch then walked home Jorge Padilla to make it 5-3 Sens. The ‘Wolves would go to the bullpen once more to get Juan Cedeno. Cedeno gave up a two-run single to Luis Jimenez to make it 7-3. De Caster then connected on a two-run double for a 9-3 lead. Erie would then surrender three more runs in the inning falling behind by nine runs at 12-3.

In the top of the ninth, the ‘Wolves would attempt to mount a comeback when Guzman connected on a two-run home run, his first of the year, to make it 12-5. However, Erie would get no closer, falling for the first time this season.

Starter Danny Christensen (0-1) started strong for Erie but lasted only 4.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits taking the loss. He walked three and struck out four in his first outing of the season.

SeaWolves Win Thriller, 3-2 Over Harrisburg

The SeaWolves took game two of a three-game set against the Harrisburg Senators with a 3-2 nail biter on Tuesday night at Commerce Bank Park. The win improves Erie to 5-1 on the season.

Harrisburg struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Josh Rainwater. With one out, Luis Jimenez stepped in and clubbed his third home run of the season to put the Sens ahead 1-0.

The SeaWolves took the lead in the top of the third against Harrisburg starter Ismael Ramirez. With one out Danny Worth and Freddy Guzman each singled, setting the table for Will Rhymes. Rhymes stepped in an connected on his first home run of the season. The three-run shot over the wall in right put Erie ahead 3-1.

Jimenez would step to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning for Harrisburg and bring them to within a run as he connected on his second home run of the game with two outs making it a 3-2 game in favor of the ‘Wolves.

In the bottom of the eighth, the SeaWolves got into, and battled out of trouble. Reliever Danny Zell walked Andrew Lafave to start the inning. Javi Herrera then laid down a sacrifice bunt and on the throw to second, Zell fired the ball into centerfield, allowing the runners to reach second and third. A catchers interference then put Ian Desmond on to load the bases with no outs. Zell then induced a pop out off the bat of Roger Bernadina and got Ed Rogers to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to preserve the one-run lead.

Brett Jensen came into the ballgame in the ninth and worked a perfect inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Rainwater (2-0) went 5.2 solid innings for Erie allowing a run on three hits with no walks and a season-high six strikeouts.

'Wolves Fall in 10...Head Home 5-2

It was another thriller at Commerce Bank Park between the SeaWolves and Harrisburg Senators, but unlike Tuesday night, Harrisburg took a one-run victory over the ‘Wolves in 10 innings to win the series.

Erie struck first for their only run in the top of the third inning. Danny Worth singled with one out and stole second. With two down, Will Rhymes connected on a single that just got to the outfield grass. By the time second baseman Marco Yepez reached the ball, Rhymes got safely to first and Worth scored, putting the ‘Wolves ahead 1-0.

Harrisburg would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth off of SeaWolves starter Jon Connolly. Connolly, who had retired the first 10 batters he faced in the game, gave up back-to-back walks to Yepez and Justin Maxwell. Jorge Padilla then doubled home Yepez, nodding the game at 1-1. After intentionally walking Luis Jimenez, Connolly induced a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the bases loaded jam.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the 10th against reliever Juan Cedeno. Ian Desmond singled and Mike Daniel walked to put the winning run in scoring position for Yepez. On a sacrifice bunt attempt by Yepez, Max Leon dropped the ball allowing the Senators to load the bases for Maxwell. The ‘Wolves then went to the bullpen and brought in Matt Rusch who got Maxwell to ground out for the first out of the inning. However, with the bases loaded, Padilla connected on his third hit of the game, a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield, bringing home the winning run.

Connolly got his second no-decision despite tossing a strong outing. He went six, allowing a run on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

The SeaWolves finished the road trip with a 5-2 record and will head back to Jerry Uht Park to begin a four-game series with the Binghamton Mets on Thursday…6:35 First Pitch.

'Wolves Win Wild Home Opener!

The SeaWolves improved to 6-2 on the season and remained on top of the Southern Division with a 10-7 thriller over the Binghamton Mets at Jerry Uht Park in the team's home opener!

The B-Mets struck first in the top of the first inning. Emmanuel Garcia reached on an error with one out and was driven home by Daniel Murphy on a base hit to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead.

The SeaWolves answered in the bottom of the second inning. Deik Scram led off with a walk and Wilkin Ramirez singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Ryan Roberson pop out, Max St. Pierre stepped in and singled to left, scoring Scram, tying the game at 1-1.

The ‘Wolves would take their first lead in the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Will Rhymes singled and stole second. Jeff Frazier and Scram both drew walks to load the bases for Ramirez. Ramirez connected on a bases clearing triple to left field, putting Erie ahead 4-1.

Binghamton cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the sixth when Nick Evans hit his first home run of the season.

The SeaWolves again answered in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two down, Danny Worth drew a walk and scored on Freddy Guzman’s triple. It was the second triple of the season for Guzman. Both he and Ramirez extended their hitting streaks to eight straight games.

The ‘Wolves ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. Jose Coronado led off the inning with a walk. After reliever Anthony Tomey retired the next batter, Fernando Martinez singled and Emmanuel Garcia walked to load the bases. Murphy then singled home a pair to pull the B-Mets to within a run at 5-4. Evans then stepped in a singled home the game tying run on a single to left. Mike Carp followed and sent a liner to right that was misplayed by Ramirez; the play allowed Murphy to score making it 6-5 Binghamton.

Erie again would show resilience as they came right back in the bottom half of the seventh. Scram doubled down the right field line with one out and reached third on an error by Ambiorix Concepcion. Ramirez walked to put runners on the corners for Ryan Roberson. Roberson sent a fly ball to right and Concepcion dropped the ball for his second error of the inning, Scram scored on the play, tying the game at 6-6. Roberson was credited with a sacrifice and an RBI on the play. A double steal then put runners on second and third with St. Pierre batting, however, he grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Following a walk to Kody Kirkland to load the bases, Danny Worth stepped in and clubbed a grand slam off of reliever Nick Abel to put Erie ahead 10-6. They would go on to win 10-7.

Danny Zell (1-0) picked up the win for the ‘Wolves in relief. Zell allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work.

Erie starter Ben Fritz took his second straight no-decision despite putting together another solid outing. He went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with a pair of walks and a season-high five strikeouts.

'Wolves lose slugfest 18-13

The SeaWolves fell on Friday night in a slugfest against the Binghamton Mets 18-13. The two teams combined to score 31 runs on 39 hits and eight errors in the game.

The B-Mets struck first in the top of the first inning. Francisco Martinez led off the game with a walk and he scored on a Mike Carp base knock to put Binghamton ahead 1-0.

The ‘Wolves answered in the bottom of the second with one out when Dusty Ryan hit his second home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

Binghamton struck for three runs in the top of the third inning regaining the lead. Emmanuel Garcia walked and was brought home with one out by Nick Evans. Carp followed by reaching on a fielder’s choice and Ambiorix Concepcion singled to put a pair on for Jose Coronado. Coronado singled home Carp and on an error by Freddy Guzman in center, Concepcion scored to make it 4-1 Mets.

The ‘Wolves would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Danny Worth doubled and scored on a double play making it 4-2.

The Mets struck again in the top of the fifth. Garcia and Daniel Murphy and Carp all singled to load the bases for Concepcion who connected on a sacrifice fly scoring a run. Coronado then doubled the second run of the inning. With two down, Rafael Arroyo reached on an error by Ryan Roberson at first, allowing a pair to score, making it 8-2.

Again, the SeaWolves would strike right back in the bottom half of the inning. Roberson led off and reached on an error. With one out, Guzman singled and Will Rhymes followed with a two-run double to make it 8-4. Back-to-back singles by Deik Scram and Jeff Frazier made it a two-run game at 8-6.

In the top of the sixth, Binghamton would go right back on the attach against Luke French. Evans stepped to the plate after back-to-back singles by Garcia and Murphy and he clubbed a three-run home run to make it 11-6. The Mets would add two more in the inning, opening up a 13-6 lead.

The Mets would then go up by a 16-6 count with three more runs in the top of the seventh.

The offensive onslaught kept right on going in the bottom of the seventh. Frazier homered for the second time this season with one out to cut the lead down to nine. Ryan and Max Leon singled and Roberson walked to load the bases for Worth. Worth hit a sacrifice fly, taking the deficit down to eight. Guzman then doubled home a pair to make it 16-10 and Rhymes singled home Guzman to make it 16-11.

Erie made it a four-run game in the bottom of the eighth when Scram led off with a solo home run to center, his first long ball of the season. However, four runs would be as close as Erie would get as the Mets added two in the top of the ninth to make it 18-12.

The ‘Wolves closed out their scoring in the bottom of the ninth on Roberson’s first home run of the season to make it 18-13.

The 18 runs was the most given up by the ‘Wolves in 2008 and the 13 runs was the most scored by Erie in 2008. Four home runs was also a season-high.

The Binghamton Mets and the Erie SeaWolves put on another hitting clinic on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. The ‘Wolves, down 10 early, made a valiant comeback attempt, only to fall short by a run 11-10.

The Mets got the scoring started in the top of the first inning against SeaWolves starter Andrew Kown. Kown, fresh off a six shutout innings in his first start against Bowie, struggled in the game. Francisco Martinez and Emmanuel Garcia drew back-to-back walks to start the game. Daniel Murphy then singled home Martinez for a 1-0 B-Mets lead. Nick Evans then tripled home both baserunners for a 3-0 Binghamton advantage. Mike Carp followed with the third hit of the inning, bringing home Evans for the fourth run of the game. Later in the inning, Jose Coronado and Josh Peterson both singled home runs before Kown induced a 3-6-1 double play to end the top of the first with Binghamton ahead 6-0.

The B-Mets would go up 9-0 in the top of the third inning. Carp led off with a double and was brought home on Salomon Manriquez’ first home run of the season. Peterson later doubled home Coronado who reached on an error capping a three-run third.

Binghamton would go up 10-0 in the top of the fourth when Carp singled home Murphy who led off the inning with a base knock. The 10-run deficit was the second in two days against the B-Mets.

The ‘Wolves would begin to claw their way back into the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth. Max St. Pierre led off the inning and extended his hitting streak to six straight games with his first home run of the season. The solo-shot made it 10-1. Ryan Roberson followed with a single and was doubled home by Kody Kirkland to make it 10-2. The hit was Kirkland’s second of the game. He had been 0-for his first-22 to start the season prior to the game. Kirkland would later scored on a Freddy Guzman ground ball to make it 10-3.

Binghamton would add their 11th and final run of the game in the top of the sixth with two outs when Carp homered for the forth time this season, extending the lead back up to eight runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, the ‘Wolves would make it a ballgame. Kirkland walked with one out and Danny Worth doubled to put runners on second and third for Guzman. Guzman singled home Kirkland making it 11-4. The hit for Guzman extended his hitting streak to 10 games. A walk to Will Rhymes then loaded the bases for Wilkin Ramirez who grounded home Worth to make it 11-5. Ramirez was held hitless in the game and his nine-game hit streak came to an end. Deik Scram followed with a two-run single to make it a four-run game at 11-7.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the ninth against Binghamton closer Eddie Kunz. Guzman led off with a single and Rhymes walked to put a pair on. Max Leon then doubled to the left field gap, bringing home both baserunners to make it 11-9. Scram moved Leon over to third on a base hit and Leon scored to make it 11-10. A Jeff Frazier fly ball to right moved the tying run over to third base for St. Pierre. St. Pierre drew a walk to put the winning run on first, however the ‘Wolves would get no closer as Roberson flew out to center and Kirkland struck out to end the game.

Sunday's Erie SeaWolves game against the Binghamton Mets has been postponed due to inclement weather.

The two teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, July 22 beginning at 6:05 p.m.

Tickets for Sunday's game can be exchanged for any remaining regular season game during the 2008 season.

The SeaWolves will begin a three-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park. Gates open at 6 p.m. with the first pitch at 6:35 p.m. LHP Danny Christensen will take the mound for the ‘Wolves in game one of the series.

Monday night will also be the first Erie Institute of Technology BUCK NIGHT. Fans can purchase tickets for just $3 and once inside the gates, it’s Smith’s Hot Dogs, Pepsi soft drinks, popcorn and draft beer for just $1 each!

I'll take that kind of refreshment deal anytime! (except the hot dogs; I'm vegetarian!)

The SeaWolves dropped their third straight game on Monday night as they were held to just three runs on four hits by the Bowie Baysox in a 10-3 game at Jerry Uht Park.

The Baysox got on the board in the top of the first inning when Lou Montanez connected on a one-out solo home run, his first of the season, for a 1-0 lead.

The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth inning. Mike Rodriguez led off the inning with a single and was brought home on a two-run home run by Jeff Nettles for a 3-0 Baysox advantage.

Starting pitcher Danny Christensen (0-2) pitched well for the SeaWolves despite taking his second loss of the season. He went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a season-high five strikeouts. All seven of Christensen’s runs given up this season have come on home runs by the opposition.

Bowie’s starter, Chris Waters (2-0), tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

The Baysox would add three more runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to mount a 10-0 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the ‘Wolves finally got on the board. Max Leon walked and Wilkin Ramirez singled with no outs. With one down, Dusty Ryan connected on his team leading third home of the season. The three-run shot cut the deficit down to seven, however, the ‘Wolves would get no closer, falling 10-3.

SeaWolves Drop Four Straight

Another valiant comeback attempt for the SeaWolves fell short on Tuesday afternoon as the club fell 6-5 to the Bowie Baysox at Jerry Uht Park. The loss for the ‘Wolves was their fourth straight and the team is now at .500 with a 6-6 record.

The Baysox struck first in the top of the second inning against Erie starter Josh Rainwater. Nolan Reimold singled with one out and Ryan Finan walked to put a pair on base. Zach Dillon then singled home Reimold for a 1-0 Bowie lead. Jonathan Tucker followed with a dribbler down the third base line. On the play, Kody Kirkland stepped on third for the second out but threw the ball away allowing Tucker to reach safely. Ben Davis then stepped to the plate and hit a fly ball to left that went into an out of the glove of Wilkin Ramirez. The error allowed two more to score, giving Bowie a 3-0 advantage.

The SeaWolves got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Roberson walked with one out and would later score on a Will Rhymes base hit, cutting the Bowie lead down to a pair at 3-1.

Rainwater (2-1) worked into the fifth inning for the ‘Wolves however, after retiring the first out of the inning, a third Erie error allowed Lou Montanez to reach safely and that was the end of the day for Rainwater. He went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

In the top of the sixth inning, reliever Juan Cedeno allowed back-to-back doubles to Finan and Dillon to start the inning. Finan would score on the Dillon double to extend the Bowie lead to 4-1. Dillon would later score on a Blake Davis sacrifice fly for a 5-1 Baysox lead.

Erie again cut into the Bowie lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Deik Scram led off the inning with a walk and got to second on a Jeff Frazier base hit. With two down, Roberson connected on an infield single that the shortstop Davis threw away, allowing scram to score, making it 5-2.

The Baysox scored their sixth run of the game in the top of the seventh. Montanez singled with one out and with the bases loaded, scored on a Finan sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

The ‘Wolves would add a pair in the bottom of the eight to cut the Baysox lead down to a pair. Frazier led off with a single and Max St. Pierre followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. The hit for St. Pierre extended his hitting streak to seven-straight games. With two down in the inning, Kody Kirkland drew his third walk of the game to load the bases for Freddy Guzman. Guzman would line a two-run double down the right field line to make it a 6-4 game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ramirez led off with his second triple of the season, bringing the tying run to the plate for Scram. Scram grounded out, allowing Ramirez to score, to make it a one-run game at 6-5. Erie would not get any closer, falling by that final.

The Erie SeaWolves snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday morning with a thrilling 11-10 win over the Bowie Baysox at Jerry Uht Park.

The SeaWolves got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning off of Bowie starter David Hernandez. Freddy Guzman led off and drew a walk. On a sacrifice attempt to move Guzman over by Will Rhymes, Rhymes got the bunt down but the ball was thrown away by Jeff Nettles and both runners were safe. Hernandez retired the next two batters but with two down, Dusty Ryan came to the plate and on the first pitch, doubled off the wall in left-center, bringing home a pair, giving Erie a 2-0 lead. Max Leon then singled to put a pair on for Max St. Pierre who doubled home two more to make it 4-1. The hit extended St. Pierre’s hitting streak to eight straight games.

The Baysox got on the board in the top of the second inning. Nettles led off and reached on an error. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Kenard Jones to make it a 4-1 game.

Erie would go up 7-1 in the bottom of the second. Rhymes walked and Wilkin Ramirez singled with two outs bringing Deik Scram to the plate. Scram slammed his second home run of the season over the wall in right field to make it a six run lead.

In the top of the third, the Baysox would strike back. Blake Davis led off with a walk and stole second. With one out, Lou Montanez homered for the third time in the series to make it a 7-3 game. Bowie would add another run on a Ben Davis RBI single to make it a 7-4 game.

Erie went back up by four in the fourth inning when Guzman led off and hit his second home run of the season, over the wall in left, for an 8-4 lead.

Bowie would tied the ballgame in the top of the fifth. Mike Rodriguez led off with a triple and he scored on a ground ball by Montanez to make it 8-5. Ben Fritz would retire the next two but then gave up a solo home run to Nettles to make a two-run game at 6-6. Back-to-back walks would put the tying runs on base for Jones who connected on the second triple of the inning to make it an 8-8 game.

The Baysox would take their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Montanez singled with two outs and scored on a Nolan Reimold triple to make it 9-8.

In the bottom of the sixth, Erie would tie the game. Danny Worth led off with a single and stole second. Kody Kirkland followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Worth scored on a Guzman sacrifice fly to make it 9-9

The SeaWolves regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Worth doubled with one out, Kirkalnd was hit by a pitch and Guzman walked to load the bases for Rhymes. Rhymes hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Worth, giving Erie a 10-9 lead.

The Baysox again would tie the game in the top of the ninth when, with one out, Nettles connected on his second home run of the game making it 10-10.

In the bottom of the ninth, Scram led off with a single and Ryan followed with a infield single to put the winning run on second. After a force out at third on a bunt attempt by Leon, St. Pierre stepped to the plate with the winning run at second with one out. St. Pierre lined a game-winning RBI single down the left field line, giving Erie a 11-10 win.

Danny Zell (2-0) picked up the win for Erie tossing the final three innings of the game in relief.

'Wolves Fall in Series Opener at Altoona

The SeaWolves fell to the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark by a score of 6-1.

The SeaWolves broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Jeff Frazier led off the inning and connected on his third home run of the season to give the ‘Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Curve struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the lead for good. Milver Reyes led off and drew a walk. Brian Finegan followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt to move Milver into scoring position. On the play, Erie’s starter Luke French bobbled the ball and both runners were safe. James Boone followed and laid down another sacrifice bunt and on the play, Max St. Pierre threw the ball into right field allowing Reyes to score, tying the game at 1-1. With Finegan at third and Boone on second, French delivered a wild pitch allowing Finegan to score, giving the Curve a 2-1 advantage. Boone, who advanced to third on the wild pitch, scored on a Melvin Dorta sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Altoona.

The Curve added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Delaney led off with a triple and was doubled home by Luis Cruz for a 4-1 lead. Cruz would later score in the inning on a Boone base knock to give Altoona a four-run lead at 5-1.

Altoona would go ahead 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Corley scored on a Cruz ground ball that was ruled an error.

Three Altoona pitchers, starter Yoslan Herrera (1-1), former SeaWolf Brian Rogers and Kevin Robers held the ‘Wolves offense to just one run on five hits. The one run for Erie ties a season-low, which was last done on April 9 at Harrisburg.

French (0-2) took the loss for the ‘Wolves. He shut out the Curve for the first four innings of the game but surrendered three runs in the fifth (one earned) and two in the sixth. He struck out a pair and walked three.

The loss drops the ‘Wolves to .500 at 7-7. Erie has now lost five of their last six games.

Erie would add to the lead in the top of the third inning. Will Rhymes led off with a base hit and made it to second base on a botched pickoff attempt. Freddy Guzman walked to put runners on first and second for Danny Worth. Worth singled through the right side on a hit and run, scoring Rhymes, giving the ‘Wolves a 2-0 lead. With one out, Ryan singled home Guzman for his second RBI of the game and a 3-0 lead. Worth would later score with two outs on a Deik Scram fielder’s choice to make it 4-1.

The Curve got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with two outs against Erie starter Andrew Kown. James Boone set a home run down the right field line to make it a 4-1 game. The hit by Boone ended a streak of seven straight retired by Kown.

In the top of the fifth, the SeaWolves would make it a six run game. Worth and Frazier drew back-to-back walks to start the inning against reliever Derek Antelo. With one out, Ryan Roberson came to the plate and crushed his second home run of the season. The three-run jack made it 7-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, it was Boone once again for the Curve as he stepped in with two outs and slammed an inside the park home run off the wall in center to make it a 7-2 game.

In the top of the seventh, the ‘Wolves offense would keep up the hot hitting. Ryan doubled with one out for his third hit of the game and Roberson walked to put runners on first and second. Scram followed by grounding to the second baseman Melvin Dorta. Dorta retired Roberson at second, but Scram beat Luis Cruz throw back to first to keep the inning alive with runners on the corners. Nick McIntyre then walked to load the bases for Kody Kirkland. Kirkland laced a two-run single for his second hit of the game and to give Erie a 9-2 lead. Rhymes followed by sending a single to left, plating two more runs for an 11-2 lead.

Altoona would cut the Erie lead down to seven in the bottom of the seventh when Brian Finegan homered and Boone scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly, however, they would get no closer.

In the top of the ninth against reliever Kyle Bloom Erie would add two more runs to make it a 13-4 game. Roberson led off and crushed his second home run of the game and third of the season. Scram followed with a home run to right, also his third. It marked the first two-home run game for a SeaWolf this season and it was the first back-to-back home runs hit by club in 2008.

Kown (2-1) picked up his second win of the season going seven strong innings, scattering four runs on 11 hits with no walks and no strikeouts. He is now the first Erie starter to win two games.
The 13 runs for Erie ties a season-high which was set on April 10 in an 18-13 loss to Binghamton. It was also the fifth time this season that the SeaWolves scored 10 or more runs in a game.

'Wolves Allow Late Lead to Slip Away

The SeaWolves could not hold onto a late 2-0 lead as they fell to the Altoona Curve 3-2 on Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark.

The ‘Wolves struck first in the top of the first inning. Freddy Guzman led off the game with a base knock and stole second for his league leading eighth steal. Will Rhymes laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Guzman over to third and he would score on a Dusty Ryan groundout for a 1-0 Erie lead.

In the top of the third, Erie would add to the lead. Guzman led off the inning with his league leading fourth triple. He would score on a Will Rhymes groundout to make it 2-0.

The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh. With one out, pinch hitter Anthony Webster drew a walk. After a Pedro Powell groundout, Milver Reyes singled home Webster to make it 2-1. That RBI single would mark the end of the day for Erie’s starter Danny Christensen. The SeaWolves would make the call to the pen and bring in reliever Casey Fien to face James Boone. Boone turned around on a Fien pitch and deposited the ball over the wall in right field. The home run for Boone was his third of the series and it gave Altoona the lead at 3-2.

The ‘Wolves would get no closer as reliever Chris Hernandez shut the door over the final 3.1 innings of the game. Kody Kirkland reached base on Hernandez with two outs in the ninth but Guzman flew out to end the game.

Christensen took the no-decision despite tossing his best outing of the season. He went 6.2 innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.

The loss dropped the SeaWolves to 8-8 on the season and it was the club's first loss when leading after the sixth inning of a game.
