Tigers host Brewers and Cubs in Interleague Play
Special Ticket Deals, Fireworks Show Friday, Kids Day Sunday

The Detroit Tigers welcome the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, June 19 for a three-game series to begin a six-game homestand. Friday's game is at 7:05 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 4:10 p.m. and Sunday's game is at 1:05 p.m. The Brewers make their third visit to Comerica Park and first since 2007. The Tigers hold an all-time record of 112-96 versus Milwaukee in Detroit.

Following a Tigers off-day, the Chicago Cubs visit Detroit for three games, June 23-25. Tuesday and Wednesday's games start at 7:05 p.m. while Thursday's game is at 1:05 p.m. The Cubs make their second visit to Comerica Park, last doing so in 2001. This marks the fifth meeting between the two organizations during interleague play, with the Tigers posting an 8-3 record.

Friday Night Fireworks, Sunday Kids Day and a Magglio Ordoñez Youth Sunglasses giveaway on Sunday Kids Day and Father's Day, highlight the homestand.

Fans can purchase a June Double Play, two Upper Box tickets for $39 or two Outfield Box tickets for $49, a savings of up to $29, available for the Milwaukee series.

Additionally, a July Double Play, two Upper Box tickets for $29 or two Outfield Box tickets for $49, or a Super Summer Special, a mezzanine ticket for $10 - normally $15, are available all Monday-Thursday July home games.

• Ann Fidrych, widow of former Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych, will throw the ceremonial first pitch.
  
• Friday Night Fireworks, presented by Pepsi, are free with game ticket and will immediately follow the game.
  
• One lucky fan will receive an opportunity to win $1,000 in the Pepsi Close for Cash contest between the conclusion of the game and the Friday Night Fireworks by throwing three strikes from various distances. Fans can enter for a chance to be selected at a participating Sam's Club.

• Sheila Taormina, four-time Olympian and Michigan native (Livonia), and Kathleen Brooks, PEOPLE All-Stars Among Us Finalist, will throw the ceremonial first pitches.
  

During a pregame, on-field ceremony the Detroit Tigers will recognize participants of the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run sectionals, held at Comerica Park from 7:30-9:00 a.m. Wyatt Scribner (White Lake), Shane Jackson (Harper Woods), Andrew Jacoby (Muskegon), Theodore Day (Canton), Brendan Davenport (Ypsilanti), Brant Rago (Berrien Center), Cole Anderson (Chesterfield), Tanner Tallman (Fenton), Drew Blakely (Galesburg), Tyler Brooks (Canton), Jared Schrauben (Portland), Kyle Valden (Milford), Zack Hoffman (Mount Pleasant), Kyle Rago (Berrien Center), Mike Lentine (Howell) and Toby Raymond (Romulus) will showcase their skills in pitching, hitting and running. The competition is a national grassroots initiative in which youth ages 7-14 have the opportunity to display their baseball skills. Winners of the sectional competition have the opportunity to compete in the National Finals prior to the MLB All-Star Game.

Six children will receive tickets for Saturday's game and a special on-field photo opportunity, compliments of BLUE for Kids, founded in 2006 by Major League Baseball Umpires to enrich the lives of at-risk youth and children coping with serious illness by providing memorable sports experiences, supporting pediatric care and raising awareness of foster care

During the game, Major League Baseball and the Detroit Tigers will join the Prostate Cancer Foundation to heighten awareness of prostate cancer and support its eventual eradication as players and umpires wear light blue wristbands and blue ribbon decals. From 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., the Detroit Medical Center and the Detroit Tigers will host a free baseball clinic for youth ages 10-15 at Comerica Park. Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones, head trainer Kevin Rand, strength and conditioning coordinator Javair Gillette and bullpen catcher Scott Pickens will instruct 200 participants on the proper baseball fundamentals as well as physical conditioning.

Tigers recall Catcher Dusty Ryan

The Tigers today announced the club has recalled the contract of catcher Dusty Ryan from Triple A Toledo.

Ryan was hitting .259 (38x147) with six doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBI in 46 games with Toledo.

Tigers extend Jim Leyland's contract through 2011 season

The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has extended the contract of manager Jim Leyland for two years, through the 2011 season.

Leyland is in his fourth season managing the Tigers after being named the club's 36th manager on October 4, 2005. He led the Tigers to the World Series as the American League Champions in 2006 and the club has compiled a 292-260 record during his tenure.

"We are happy to announce a two-year contract extension for Jim Leyland today," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "Jim is an outstanding manager and he has done a great job for the Tigers. We look forward to Jim leading our club for years to come."

He was tabbed the American League Manager of the Year by both the Baseball Writers Association of America and The Sporting News in 2006 after guiding the Tigers to the franchise's first playoff berth since 1987. It marked the third time he was named manager of the year by the Baseball Writers Association of America, while it was the fourth time he earned the honor from The Sporting News.

Prior to returning to the Tigers organization at the club's manager, he managed for 14 seasons at the major league level with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1986-96), Florida Marlins (1997-98) and Colorado Rockies (1999). Leyland guided the Marlins to a World Series championship in 1997 and the Pirates to three consecutive division championships (1990-92). Additionally, he spent six seasons (2000-05) as a major league scout with the St. Louis Cardinals, scouting National League clubs from PNC Park and American League clubs from Progressive Field.

His baseball career began as a catcher in the Tigers minor league system in 1964 and continued as a coach at Montgomery in 1970 and Rocky Mount during the first half of the 1971 season. Leyland received his first managerial experience at Bristol in 1971. He managed for a total of 11 seasons in the Tigers organization before joining the Chicago White Sox as Tony LaRussa's third base coach in 1982. Leyland held that position with the White Sox before being named the 33rd manager in Pirates franchise history on November 20, 1985.

Leyland resides in Pittsburgh with his wife Katie and their two children Patrick (10/11/91) and Kellie (6/23/93).

Sardinha Designated for Assignment

The Tigers today recalled the contract of righthanded pitcher Alfredo Figaro from Double A Erie.

To create room on the club's 25-man roster, the Tigers designated for assignment the contract of catcher Dane Sardinha today.

Figaro started 11 games for Erie, posting a 5-2 record, 4.10 ERA (68.0IP/31ER) and 59 strikeouts.

Sardinha batted .097 (3x31) in 12 games with the Tigers.

Tuesday and Wednesday's games start at 7:05 p.m. while Thursday's game is at 1:05 p.m. The Cubs make their second trip to Comerica Park, last visiting in 2001. Interleague play doesn't quite tell the entire history between the two century-old franchises. The Tigers made three consecutive World Series appearances from 1907-09, but came up short in all three series. The first two at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, who won the 1907 series in a four-game sweep (Game 1 ended in a tie) and the 1908 series in five games.

The Tigers would have their revenge, defeating the Cubs in six games in the 1935 World Series, giving Detroit the franchise's first world championship. Detroit won game six at Navin Field in front of 48,420 faithful Tigers fans.

Ten years later, in 1945, the two historical franchises met for the last time in postseason play. In Game 7 of the World Series, the Tigers defeated the Cubs, 9-3, in front of 41,590 fans at Wrigley Field. It marked the last time the Chicago Cubs appeared in a World Series, while the Tigers have gone on to appear in the 1968, 1984 and 2006 World Series, last being crowned world champions 25 years ago in 1984.

Tigers host first-ever live Twitter event
Fans encouraged to ask questions during Tigers-Cubs game on Wednesday


The Detroit Tigers will host the club's first-ever live Twitter event this Wednesday, June 23 as the team and special guests will answer questions from followers of their official Twitter page, @official_tigers. The Twitter event will start at 7:00 p.m. and continue until the seventh inning stretch of their home game against the Chicago Cubs. Detroit Tigers host environmental trade show
Free, public event, showcasing 'Green' friendly causes and practices

DETROIT - As the Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox, July 24-26, Comerica Park will be "Going, Going, GREEN!" The weekend is designed to educate Tigers fans about reducing their carbon footprints, highlighting what the Tigers are doing to become more environmentally friendly, and showcasing the green businesses and services of the present and future. On Saturday, July 25, the first 10,000 fans entering Comerica Park will receive a Detroit Tigers "Going, Going, GREEN!" reusable shopping bag.

From 12:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, the Tigers will host the "Going, Going, GREEN!" Trade Show outside of the Comerica Park main gates. This free event is designed for Tigers fans and the public to learn more about green initiatives while viewing products and services related to environmental causes and practices of green businesses. A game ticket is not required to attend the trade show.

The "Going, Going, GREEN!" Trade Show exhibitors will be offering products and services related to environmental causes and practices. Businesses interested in displaying products or services as exhibitors can log onto www.tigers.com/green or e-mail inquiries to going.green@detroittigers.com. Due to space limitations, space will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

The Detroit Tigers began making environmentally conscious improvements in 2007 with the installation of the Tiger Den seats, which are comprised of recycled plastic milk jugs. During the offseason, lighting is reduced throughout the ballpark and the HVAC systems are monitored to reduce energy costs. In the future, the Tigers are looking to replace light bulbs with new, high energy rated bulbs which will reduce the number of watts used.

Excess food is packed and then distributed to homeless shelters throughout Metro Detroit. Large recycling containers - resembling a bottle - were placed throughout Comerica Park prior to the season and are used to recycle plastic bottles. All other garbage is taken to a transfer station where recyclables are removed and sent to a recycling company.

Tigers agree to terms with two players from Draft

The Tigers today announced that the club has agreed to terms with two players selected in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft: shortstop Edwin Gomez (4th round selection) and lefthanded pitcher Giovanni Soto (21st round selection).

Additionally, the club has agreed to terms with non-drafted free agent outfielder Jordan Cruz from Kansas State University.

MLB, 'People' and the Detroit Tigers announce local community "All-Star" to be honored at All-Star Game
Kathleen Brooks to be featured in special pre-game ceremony on FOX; nearly three quarters of a million votes cast across the nation for all 30 winners

Major League Baseball, PEOPLE and the Detroit Tigers today announced Kathleen Brooks as the Tigers "All-Star" of the "All-Stars Among Us" campaign, which recognizes individuals who are serving their communities in extraordinary ways. Out of the three "All-Star" finalists representing the Tigers, Brooks from Sterling Heights has been chosen by fans across the nation for her community service through Be The Match Registry, a national marrow donor program. Brooks will be honored during the pre-game ceremony at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14 on FOX, at which President Barack Obama will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The "All-Stars Among Us" program is central to the 2009 MLB All-Star Summer events dedicated to charitable initiatives and recognition of the important role of community service. Nearly three quarters of a million votes were cast at PeopleAllStars.com by fans across the nation to select the 30 "All-Stars Among Us" winners (one per MLB Club) out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities.

Tickets for 'Keeping Kids in the Game' now available

Ordoñez Family Scholarship winner to be honored

DETROIT – Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez will present the 2009 Ordoñez Family Scholarship to Yanet Plascencia during an on-field ceremony at Comerica Park prior to tonight's 7:05 p.m. game versus Kansas City.

Plascencia graduated from Western International High School in southwest Detroit with a 3.9 grade point average – one of the top students in her class. She pitched on the Western International High School softball team for four years. Plascencia will attend the University of Detroit Mercy this fall and will major in engineering.

The Ordoñez Family Scholarship is a permanently endowed college scholarship administered by the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan to benefit a graduating high school senior from Southwest Detroit. The scholarship was established in 2008 through the generosity of Ordoñez and his wife, Dagly.

Plascencia and the scholarship committee members will enjoy the game from Detroit Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski's suite.

The scholarship is a $2,500 award that is renewable for up to four years (for a total of $10,000).

Last year's scholarship recipient, Emma Aviles, completed her first year at Madonna University and will receive her second installment of $2,500 toward her sophomore year.

Detroit Tigers great Willie Horton to chat live with fans
Fans encouraged to submit questions during Tigers-Royals game Tuesday

DETROIT – Tigers great Willie Horton will chat live with fans on www.tigers.com from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday as the Detroit Tigers host the Kansas City Royals. Horton, who now serves the Tigers as a Special Assistant to the President, played 14 of his 18 major league seasons with Detroit.

Victorino, Inge win record-breaking All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote races
Fans of Tigers, Phillies help first-time All-Stars earn St. Louis spots

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino and Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge were chosen by fans as the winners of the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote in record-shattering voting exclusively on MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, and the individual Club sites.

Baseball fans supported the 10 candidates named by All-Star managers Joe Maddon and Charlie Manuel in unprecedented fashion by casting a record 68.6 million votes since the program commenced on Sunday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). This year's record number of votes represents an increase of 43.5 percent from the previous mark of 47.8 million set in 2008. Since its inception in 2002, the All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote has now recorded nearly 200 million votes.

The National League winner, Victorino, received the highest total number of votes ever, surpassing Evan Longoria's nine million in 2008, and led all vote-getters with 15.6 million en route to becoming the second Phillies player to win the balloting (Bobby Abreu, 2004). He was followed by Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants, Mark Reynolds of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cristian Guzman of the Washington Nationals.

On the American League ballot, Inge became the first Detroit player to win the All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote by holding off Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers to claim the final spot on the All-Star roster with a final tally of 11.8 million votes, the most ever for an American League player. Inge and Kinsler were followed by Chone Figgins of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; Carlos Pena of the Tampa Bay Rays; and Adam Lind of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Detroit Tigers Host Environmental Trade Show
Free, Public Event, Showcasing 'Green' Friendly Causes and Practices July 24-26

As the Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox, July 24-26, Comerica Park will be "Going, Going, GREEN!". The weekend is designed to educate Tigers fans and the public about how to reduce their carbon footprints, highlight what the Tigers are doing to become more environmentally friendly, and showcase the Michigan green businesses and services of the present and future. On Saturday, July 25, the first 10,000 fans entering Comerica Park will receive a Detroit Tigers "Going, Going, GREEN!" reusable shopping bag.

From 12:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the Tigers will host a "Going, Going, GREEN!" Trade Show outside of the Comerica Park main gates. This local, free event is designed for Tigers fans and the public to learn more about green initiatives while viewing products and services related to environmental causes and practices of green businesses. A game ticket is not required to attend the trade show.

Among those businesses participating will be DTE Energy and its Detroit Edison and MichCon subsidiaries. Representatives from the State of Michigan's "No Worker Left Behind Green Jobs Initiative" will be providing information regarding education and training programs available for individuals interested in becoming part of the "green collar" work force. Also, representatives from the Michigan Talent Bank will inform the public about its services for potential employees and employers.

Children can be entertained at the Detroit Science Center's "Launching the Green Machine" program, complete with free handouts and discussions on how to be a caretaker of the Earth by following the three R's: "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

During all four games of the Tigers versus White Sox series, fans in attendance will be able to pick up "green living" tips from Sara Snow, Green Living Expert and TV Host, and a native of Ann Arbor. Cheer On the Detroit Tigers and Help Raise Much-Needed Student Scholarship Funds

Cornerstone Schools is hosting the 4th annual "Be a Tiger for Kids" event at Comerica Park on Tuesday, August 18th. This fun-filled, family event supports the children of Cornerstone and makes possible an excellent education and prepares students for life and leadership.

Tigers host Seattle to begin seven-game homestand

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers welcome the Seattle Mariners to Detroit on Tuesday for a three-game series to begin a seven-game homestand. Tuesday and Wednesday's games start at 7:05 p.m. while Thursday's matinee begins at 1:05 p.m. The Tigers then host their division rival Chicago White Sox for four games beginning on Friday, July 24, with a split doubleheader. Friday's games are at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., Saturday's game is at 4:05 p.m. and Sunday's game starts at 8:09 p.m.

Detroit Tigers celebrate "Christmas in July" Thursday at 1:05 p.m.
Santa Claus, Santa Paws, elves and toy soldiers come to Comerica Park; $15 Mezzanine tickets for just $10 make great gifts

Cool down from the summer heat at Comerica Park on Thursday, July 23, as the Tigers host the second annual Christmas in July, presented by 105.1 WMGC. Comerica Park transforms into a winter wonderland, complete with live holiday music, appearances by Santa Claus, Santa PAWS, elves and toy soldiers, Christmas trees and exciting giveaways throughout the game. Gates open at 11:30 a.m.

Prior to entering Comerica Park, fans will recognize the three holiday floats in front of the stadium located on Witherell Street, including "Santa's Workshop" and "The Grinch" floats, as they have been featured in Detroit's annual America's Thanksgiving Parade.

Fans will be greeted with the popular sounds of Christmas music, including the sounds of The Salvation Army's familiar red kettle bell ringers. Courtesy of The Salvation Army, a 25-member youth choir will be singing traditional Christmas carols at Gate A from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. while the Salvation Army's brass band will be performing at Gate C and a brass ensemble will be strolling the concourse. The national anthem will be performed by The Salvation Army Men's Adult Rehabilitation Center Choir.

The big guy himself straight from the North Pole, Santa Claus, will be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and along with Dr. Suess' The Grinch, sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch. Santa Claus is available for photo shoots and interview requests during his special trip to Detroit.

Santa Claus will also take a free picture and give a complimentary red or green photo-frame key chain to the first 200 children who visit the Santa photo booth from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Big Cat Court. While at the Big Cat Court, families can also enjoy activities such as decorating a 12-foot Christmas tree.

Many exciting giveaways including Boyz II Men concert tickets, Gary Allen concert tickets, Majestic Tigers jackets, Red Robin gift certificates and movie tickets for the Ren Cen 4 Theater located in the GM Renaissance Center, among others, will be given out during the game.

Tigers Recalled Carlos Guillen

The Tigers today recalled the injury rehabilitation assignment of outfielder Carlos Guillen from Triple A Toledo and reinstated him from the disabled list. To create room on the club's 25-man roster, the Tigers today designated the contract of outfielder Josh Anderson for assignment. Guillen hit .571 (4x7) with an RBI in two games with Triple A Toledo. In five games with Single A Lakeland, he hit .250 (3x12) with a double and four walks.
