Gates Brown Field dedication set for April 19
Former Tigers player honored by Crestline High School

DETROIT - Gates Brown, best known for his timely contributions for the 1968 World Series Champion Tigers and his record-setting pinch-hits, will be honored on Sunday, April 19 by Crestline (Ohio) High School when its high school baseball diamond will be named Gates Brown Field. Brown attended Crestline High School (1954-57) and played baseball, football and basketball.

A dedication banquet will take place at the St. Joseph Convocation Center in Crestline on Sunday, April 19 at 5:00 p.m. The field dedication ceremony is set for Monday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. "Gates Brown Field" will appear over the centerfield scoreboard. Former Tigers Willie Horton, Mickey Stanley, Jon Warden, Dave Bergman, Doug Gallagher, and Tom Timmerman are scheduled to attend.

"You dream about something like this, but you don't ever think it's going to happen," said Brown. "This is quite an honor."

Brothers Joe and Mike Gottfried, two Crestline natives formed a committee and worked to make the field dedication a reality. Proceeds from the April 19 banquet will also go towards the Gates Brown college scholarship fund.

Brown played 13 seasons for the Tigers and spent seven more as a coach, winning World Series rings in 1968 as a player and in 1984 as a coach. Gates is best remembered for hitting .450 as a pinch-hitter and .370 during 1968, with a .442 on-base percentage. He still holds American League pinch-hitting records for career hits (107) and home runs (16) and the major league pinch-hit mark for runs batted in (74).

Brown remains an active ambassador in the community for the Tigers. He attends most home games, greeting fans and suite guests, and continues to make community appearances talking about his path to the big leagues while encouraging Detroit's youth to play baseball.

Tigers promote baseball with Play Baseball Detroit program

DETROIT - Ramon Santiago, PAWS and members of the Detroit Tigers front office will visit with Ronald Brown Academy students tomorrow, April 28, 2009 from 11:00-11:45 a.m. as part of the Tigers "Play Baseball Detroit" program, now in its second year. The event will be filled with games, music, videos and more - all dedicated to reintroducing the game of baseball to the students.

"The Detroit Tigers organization is extremely proud of the Play Baseball Detroit program," said Elaine Lewis, Vice President of Public Affairs and Strategic Planning. "We are passionate about exposing youth to the game of baseball and our middle school rallies and community clinics are central to accomplishing that goal."

Tigers recall Clay Rapada from Triple A Toledo

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has recalled the contract of lefthanded pitcher Clay Rapada from Triple A Toledo. Additionally, the club today optioned the contract of infielder Jeff Larish to Toledo.

Rapada has made eight appearances with the Mud Hens this season, posting a 6.00 ERA (6.0IP/4ER), one save and seven strikeouts. He saw action in 25 games with the Tigers in 2008, compiling a 3-0 record and 4.22 ERA (21.1IP/10ER). In 30 games at the major league level during his career, Rapada has limited lefthanded batters to a .222 batting average (10x45).

Larish has appeared in eight games with the Tigers this season, hitting .176 (3x17) with a home run.

All-Star Game Balloting Begins Today at Comerica Park
Vote for Your Favorite Detroit Tigers Today

Vote for your favorite Tigers players! All-Star Game balloting at Comerica Park begins today, April 28 with an on-field, pregame ceremony to launch the voting. During the ceremony Elizabeth Trevorrow from the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan will cast the first All-Star ballot.

Ballot boxes where fans can vote for Tigers on the ballot - including Miguel Cabrera, Adam Everett, Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen, Brandon Inge, Gerald Laird, Magglio Ordoñez and Placido Polanco - will be stationed throughout the lower concourse until June 21. Fans may also vote online at tigers.com until July 2.

Tigers celebrate '80s night at Comerica Park Monday
Giveaways, live music, costumed characters highlight evening

Tease your hair, put on some shades and, like, totally, get pumped for '80s Night. The Detroit Tigers travel back in time to celebrate the 1980s on Monday, May 4 as they take on the Minnesota Twins at 7:05 p.m., the first game of a two-game series.

Sponsored by Belle Tire, '80s Night will feature awesome live music, giveaways, a rad car display and costumed characters pulled directly out of the '80s to entertain fans.

The first 7,500 fans will receive a Jack Morris Replica Jersey T-Shirt, courtesy of Belle Tire, in honor of Morris' 1984 no-hitter. Other giveaways during the game include Cabbage Patch Dolls, autographed Def Leppard CDs, and concert tickets for upcoming Leonard Cohen and Pat Benatar concerts.

Tigers announce Tryout Camp on June 22

The Detroit Tigers today announced a tryout camp to be held at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, on Monday, June 22.

Registration for the camp begins at 8:30 a.m., with the work out starting at 9:00 a.m. The tryout camp is for players age 16-23, or those players with previous professional baseball experience. No pre-registration or participation fee is necessary to attend the camp. Those interested in trying out must provide their own glove and work out equipment. Wood bats, helmets and baseballs will be provided by the Tigers.

Tigers host Central Division rivals Indians and Twins

Curtis Granderson will visit Mark Twain Elementary School where he will read "The ABCs of Detroit Tigers Baseball" to students. Through a grant awarded by the Detroit Tigers Foundation, the Detroit Tigers, in partnership with the Detroit Free Press and their Newspapers in Education program, have created an educational supplement to combat illiteracy and is distributed to students throughout the state.

Buses For Baseball: Through the Detroit Tigers 50,000 Ticket Donation program, the Tigers will provide 50 complimentary tickets to bring inner city children from University Prepatory Academy to Comerica Park. The MLB Players Trust, sponsored by the MLB Players Association, arranges for bus transportation and food vouchers for the children.

Mario Impemba helps provide Tigers Opening Day to troops of United States Armed Forces
FOX Sports Detroit announcer donates DVD presentation of Tigers Home Opener, available to active military world wide

Transplanted Tigers fans currently serving the United States Armed Forces will now be able to celebrate Opening Day 2009 while on duty, home or abroad. "Operation Opening Day," a three-hour DVD containing the entire FOX Sports Detroit telecast of the Tigers 15-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on April 10, as well as pre-game festivities and post-game interviews and highlights, is available for all active members of the military.

The DVD is a gift from Mario Impemba, play-by-play announcer on FOX Sports Detroit, in cooperation with the Tigers and Major League Baseball Productions.

Nominate Detroit-area "All-Stars" to represent Tigers during 2009 MLB All-Star Game
MLB and 'People' national campaign to recognize everyday heroes

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers fans are encouraged to nominate local individuals who they feel serve the Detroit-area community in extraordinary ways. Through the Major League Baseball national campaign, "All-Stars Among Us," a total of 30 everyday All-Stars, one representing each Major League Club, will be honored at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game. This initiative is part of the 2009 All-Star Summer program dedicated to charitable causes and recognition of the important role of community service.

"There are a number of All-Stars in our community, and this campaign is a great way for the Detroit Tigers and Major League Baseball to recognize their dedication and hard work," said Elaine Lewis, Vice President, Community and Public Affairs.

Fans can log onto www.PeopleAllStars.com to nominate Detroit-area community All-Stars from now until Friday, May 22. Three finalists representing the Detroit Tigers, along with three representatives of each MLB team, will be announced in June. Fans can then vote online for one winner among the finalists to represent each club at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 14.

All 30 winners will be included in the All-Star Week festivities in St. Louis and honored during the All-Star Game pregame ceremony. Additionally, one winning "All-Star Among Us" will be featured in a PEOPLE editorial during the week of the MLB All-Star Game.

For the last 35 years, PEOPLE has told stories of everyday 'heroes' whose acts of courage, commitment, strength and compassion are changing the lives of others. The "All-Stars Among Us" campaign will extend the PEOPLE "Heroes Among Us" franchise and will be a fully integrated online contest.

Robertson placed on DL, French's contract purchased

The Tigers today announced the club has placed lefthanded pitcher Nate Robertson on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 6 with a low back muscle strain.

To take Robertson's place on the club's 25-man roster, the Tigers today purchased the contract of lefthanded pitcher Luke French from Triple A Toledo. In six starts with the Mud Hens, French posted a 2-2 record, 2.91 ERA (34.0IP/11ER) and 29 strikeouts.

French will be in uniform today in Minnesota. He will wear uniform number 53.

Tigers open longest homestand of season tomorrow
Value deals highlight Oakland, Texas and Colorado games

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers open a nine-game homestand - the longest home stretch of the season - on Friday, May 15 when they host the Oakland Athletics for the first game of a three-game set. Friday and Saturday's games start at 7:05 p.m. while Sunday's matchup begins at 1:05 p.m. Following an off day, the Texas Rangers ride into the Motor City on Tuesday, May 19 for the first game of a three-game series. Tuesday and Wednesday's contests begin at 7:05 p.m. and Thursday's game is at 1:05 p.m. The Tigers then face their first National League opposition, the Colorado Rockies in a weekend series, May 22-24.

Graduates of Ronald McDonald House, along with their families and supporters, will be recognized during an on-field, pregame ceremony celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Detroit. The Tigers provided 200 complimentary game tickets for the group through the Detroit Tigers ticket donation program.

From 11:10 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Tigers fans may take pictures of their favorite Tigers players and coaches from the Comerica Park outfield during the first of two Photo Days. Due to the success and demand of this event, the Tigers added an additional Photo Day this year that will take place on August 16.

During an on-field, pregame ceremony, 15 organizations will receive a grant from the Detroit Tigers Foundation, totaling over $200,000. These grants will directly assist a variety of baseball-related programs, including the renovation of 20 baseball or softball fields throughout Michigan, a barrier-free field in a community that has over 63,000 special needs children and sending a Metro Detroit contingent of Special Olympic softball players to the Summer Sports Classic.

Major League Baseball and the Detroit Tigers have partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to go to bat against breast cancer. During an on-field, pregame recognition, the Detroit Tigers will welcome 250 breast cancer survivors to Comerica Park. The Tigers provided 1,000 complimentary game tickets for the survivors and family members through the Major League Baseball Commissioner's Initiative for Kids.

In addition, the Tigers will host Honorary Bat Girl Stacy Goss, winner of Major League Baseball's "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" campaign. Goss and her family will join her to watch the game from the personal luxury suite of Shani Inge, wife of Tigers' infielder Brandon Inge.

Detroit Tigers foundation awards $200,000 in grants
15 organizations to receive checks during on-field, pregame ceremony includes renovation of 20 baseball and softball fields in Michigan

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers Foundation will present over $200,000 in grants to 15 organizations during an on-field, pregame ceremony prior to the 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday, May 17. These grants will directly assist nearly 6,000 youth through a variety of baseball-related programs.

As a result of the grants, 20 baseball or softball fields throughout Michigan will be renovated and both Tiny Tigers, a summer Tee Ball program for children, and the Detroit Tigers Hometown Championship, a three-day youth baseball and softball tournament, will be expanded.

In addition, training will be provided to over 100 Detroit area youth baseball and softball coaches, a barrier-free baseball field will be constructed in a community that has over 63,000 special needs children and a baseballthemed health educational supplement will be distributed to over 68,000 students throughout Michigan.

"The Detroit Tigers organization believes in the need to invest in our community's future," said Jordan Field, Director of the Detroit Tigers Foundation. Tigers announce tryout camp in Toledo on August 10

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced a tryout camp to be held at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Toledo Mud Hens, on Monday, August 10.

Registration for the camp begins at 8:30 a.m., with the work out starting at 9:00 a.m. The tryout camp is for players age 16-23, or those players with previous professional baseball experience. No pre-registration or participation fee is necessary to attend the camp. Those interested in trying out must provide their own glove and work out equipment. Wood bats, helmets and baseballs will be provided by the Tigers.

Ramirez recalled from Toledo

The Tigers today recalled the contract of outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from Triple A Toledo to replace Magglio Ordonez on the club's 25-man roster.

In 30 games with the Mud Hens, Ramirez was hitting .316 (37x117) with three doubles, a triple, five home runs, 13 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Ramirez will be in uniform tonight for the Tigers, wearing #60.

Tigers begin Interleague play this weekend
Colorado Rockies first NL opponent to visit Detroit

The Detroit Tigers conclude a nine-game homestand - the longest home stretch of the season - beginning Friday, May 22 when they host the Colorado Rockies for the first of three games. Tigers honor members of United States Armed Forces pregame recognition prior to Tigers vs. Rockies

Tigers Wives participate in Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure
Crowd of 30,000 expected for 18th annual event

DETROIT - For the eighth year, the Detroit Tigers have formed a walking team comprised of Tigers Wives, front office personnel and family and friends to participate in the 18th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, presented locally by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, on Saturday, May 30 at Comerica Park. Shani Inge, wife of Tigers infielder Brandon Inge, along with Jessi Miner, Kristi Sardinha and Danna Thames, will present the Tigers Wives "Rookie of the Year" award to the largest, new team that participates in the Race for the Cure.

Opening ceremonies for the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure will begin at 8:00 a.m., prior to the 9:00 a.m. 5k run which will be followed by a 5k walk and a one-mile walk, with closing ceremonies beginning at 10:30 a.m. The annual event raises funds for research to end breast cancer forever and to raise awareness of breast health.

Expected to attract a crowd of 30,000, the event seeks to raise more than $2 million, with 75 percent of the net income staying within the Metro Detroit community to fund local breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. The remaining 25 percent funds groundbreaking breast cancer research around the globe.

Celebrating more than 25 years, Miss American Coed Pageants have been the country's most popular, natural pageant for girls. These pageants reinforce the confidence and natural beauty that is within each girl.

Since April of 2008, Pennies for Paws has raised more than $13,000. The Detroit Tigers have partnered with the National Fish and Wildlife's Save the Tiger Fund to create Pennies for Paws, a coin collection at Comerica Park that raises funds to save endangered wild tigers. PETA names Comerica Park one of the most vegetarian-friendly ballparks
Detroit Tigers' Home Field Features Veggie Burgers, Vegetable Wraps, Vegetarian Sushi, and More

Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, has placed seventh in PETA's annual rankings of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly ballparks. The park features a wide selection of vegetarian options, including veggie burgers, veggie dogs, meat-free wraps, vegetarian sushi, meatless taco salads, fruit cups, and vegetable stir-fries.

Top athletes-including slugger Prince Fielder, NBA star Raja Bell, mixed martial arts fighters Mac Danzig and Dale Hart, Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, NBA legend John Salley, and Olympic great Carl Lewis-look to meatless meals to boost their performance and help stop animal suffering. And judging by the ever-growing array of delicious vegetarian meals available at major-league parks, fans are following their lead.

Grabbing first-place honors for the third year in a row is Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies, and finishing close behind is AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. Tigers host Angels this weekend
Firework shows on Friday and Saturday, Kids Day on Sunday

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday, June 5 for a three-game weekend series to close out the six-game homestand. Friday and Saturday's games start at 7:05 p.m. while Sunday's contest is at 1:05 p.m.

New in June, fans can now purchase a June Double Play, two Upper Box tickets for $39 or two Lower Box tickets for $49, a savings of up to $29, available for all June home games, excluding the Chicago Cubs series.

Celebrating more than 25 years, Miss American Coed Pageants have been the country's most popular, natural pageant for girls. These pageants reinforce the confidence and natural beauty that is within each girl.

Since April of 2008, Pennies for Paws has raised more than $13,000. The Detroit Tigers have partnered with the National Fish and Wildlife's Save the Tiger Fund to create Pennies for Paws, a coin collection at Comerica Park that raises funds to save endangered wild tigers. Fans are encouraged to donate coins at the tiger bank located on the concourse.

The Tigers provided 800 complimentary tickets for Sunday's game to students and family of Our Lady of Sorrows School in Farmington, who collected $3,613.79 to support Pennies for Paws.

Players show their support for youth baseball all season

DETROIT - Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis will today display his dedication for Metro Detroit youth baseball programs as he wears an orange Play Baseball Detroit wristband on the mound. Willis, along with outfielder Curtis Granderson, began wearing the orange wristbands during the middle of May to show their support for Play Baseball Detroit, a comprehensive urban youth baseball program dedicated to encouraging and supporting youth baseball and softball programs in the greater Detroit community.

The orange wristbands, available to youth baseball teams that register for Team Tigers, have the Play Baseball Detroit logo and the Team Tigers logo prominently displayed on either side. The multi-faceted Play Baseball Detroit program features an equipment collection, school rallies, youth clinics and a competitive tournament to encourage and develop the young athletes of our city into the baseball stars of tomorrow. The program is funded by the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, through the generosity of Willis and Miguel Cabrera.

Team Tigers is a need-based registration and reward program specifically designed to provide new and expanding baseball programs the tools and resources needed to succeed. Tigers select Jacob Turner
Righthanded pitcher is Detroit's top pick in First-Year Player Draft

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today selected righthanded pitcher Jacob Turner from Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, MO with their first pick (ninth overall) in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Turner compiled a 7-2 record and 0.60 ERA as a senior at Westminster Christian Academy in 2009. He fanned 113 batters in 58.1 innings pitched, while issuing only 13 walks.

"The Tigers organization is pleased to select Jacob Turner today," Tigers Vice President, Amateur Scouting David Chadd said. "He has a power arm and we're excited to add a pitcher of his caliber and potential to our system."

The 6-5, 205-pound righthander is rated by Baseball America as possessing the second-best fastball among all draft-eligible high school prospects this year and is rated as the second-closest high school prospect to reaching the major leagues.

Detroit Tigers Foundation grant assists field renovations
Eagle Sports Club dedicates two renovated fields

DETROIT - Detroit's favorite Mascot, PAWS, joins Eagle Sports Club's 2009 Summer Baseball Opening Day celebration on Saturday, June 13 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. The event will include a dedication ceremony for two Balduck Memorial Park baseball field renovations, made possible in part by a grant awarded last season from the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Major League Baseball's Baseball Tomorrow Fund.

In addition to the field dedication, there will be the annual Eagle Sports Club baseball parade, an inflatable carnival ride, the Universal Antique Ambulance, a St. John Emergency "Fun" Tent, and a presentation by Detroit City Council member, Alberta Tinsley-Talabi.

The Balduck Memorial Park field renovations benefited from one of 11 grants awarded in 2008 by the Detroit Tigers Foundation. This season, the Detroit Tigers Foundation presented over $200,000 in grants to 15 organizations during an on-field, pregame ceremony in May. The grants will directly assist nearly 6,000 youth through a variety of baseball-related programs, including the renovation of 20 baseball or softball fields throughout Michigan.

The Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, was established in 2005 to enhance lives through the game of baseball. With a focus on youth, education and recreation, the Foundation aids and develops initiatives that help promote the game of baseball. Top high school baseball talent showcased June 16 at Comerica Park
Get a first-hand look at the stars of tomorrow

While the Tigers are on the road, the games continue at Comerica Park. This Tuesday, June 16, Michigan all-star high school baseball players will showcase their talent in the 28th annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association East-West All-Star Classic.

Since 1981, the MHSBCA has hosted an all-star game featuring the top baseball talent in the state of Michigan. For the third consecutive year, the game is presented by the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, in an effort to strengthen the game of baseball in the state while Michigan's best players are on display.

The game will feature 36 of the best senior players from public and private high schools throughout Michigan, as selected by the Coaches Association.

The All-Star Classic annually features Michigan draft prospects. This year, five players - Daniel Fields (UD Jesuit and son of former Tigers coach Bruce Fields), Derek Dennis (Forest Hills Central), Mike Schaaf (Arthur Hill), Almon (Victor) Roache (Lincoln), and Patrick Biondi (Divine Child) - were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft. Fields, Roache and Biondi were drafted by the Detroit Tigers organization in this past week's Major League Baseball draft.

Tickets are available for $5 at the door. Kids who wear their little league uniforms gain free admission. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00 p.m.
