Ordonez named 'King Tiger' 2007 by Mayo Smith Society members

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez has won the 2007 King Tiger Award, given each year by the Mayo Smith Society.

Ordoñez edged outfielder Curtis Granderson in the voting for the award. Veteran closer Todd Jones and rookie outfielder-infielder Ryan Raburn tied for third. They were the only Tigers to garner votes in the balloting.

The award is given for a Tigers player's on-field and off-field contributions.

Ordoñez led the American League with a .363 batting average and 54 doubles, while he was second with 139 RBI, 216 hits, a .434 on-base percentage and 354 total bases. He finished fourth in the league with a .595 slugging percentage and 82 extra-base hits, while ranking fifth with 117 runs scored and seventh with 27 home runs.

Off the field, Ordoñez annually donates $100,000 to the Detroit Tigers Foundation. He also purchased 50 tickets for underprivileged children to attend a game during ¡Fiesta Tigres!, the team's annual Latin-American celebration.

Voting was conducted among Mayo Smith Society members via e-mail and postal mail. Voting ended on January 8.

Ordoñez had previously won the Tiger of the Year award by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America, and had been named The Detroit News' Sportsman of the Year for 2007.

Mayo Smith Society leaders plan to give Ordoñez his award before a home game during the organization's annual spring training trip to Lakeland, Florida, set this year for March 15-22.

The Mayo Smith Society, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008, is the international fan club for Detroit Tigers fans. In addition to the spring training trip, it sponsors an annual gathering in Detroit, outings to East Coast cities where the Tigers and their minor league affiliates play, makes charitable contributions, and publishes the "Tigers Stripes" and "E-Mayo Flash" newsletters.

Since the Mayo Smith Society reinstituted the King Tiger Award after being dormant since 1981, winners have been:

2004: Carlos Guillen and Ivan Rodriguez (tie)
2005: Placido Polanco
2006: Kenny Rogers

Ordoñez set to announce Family Scholarship
Community event to be held at Holy Redeemer Church in southwest Detroit

DETROIT -- Magglio Ordoñez usually hits all of his home runs on a baseball field. However, this weekend, the reigning American League batting champion will begin touching all the bases to help deserving high school seniors attend college.

The Detroit Tigers Caravan will make a special stop at a community event in Southwest Detroit on Sunday, January 13 to formally announce the creation of the Ordoñez Family Scholarship.

The Ordoñez Family Scholarship is an endowed scholarship funded by a generous donation to the Detroit Tigers Foundation by Ordoñez and his family. Administered through the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the Ordoñez Family Scholarship will award an annual $2,500 scholarship to a Southwest Detroit high school senior to attend college, renewable for up to four years (up to $10,000).

The announcement on Sunday will be part of a community event to be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1721 Junction Avenue, and hosted by the Southwest Detroit Business Association. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public. The scholarship announcement will take place from 11:15-11:45 a.m. with participants available to answer media questions for approximately 15 minutes following the event.

In addition to Ordoñez, also expected to participate in the program on Sunday are Jordan Field, manager of the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Robin Ferriby, Vice President Philanthropic Services, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, and Kathy Wendler, Southwest Detroit Business Association President.

"We are proud to join Magglio and his family in making this commitment to the youth of Southwest Detroit," said Elaine Lewis, Vice President, Community and Public Affairs for the Tigers. "We look forward to celebrating and honoring the Ordoñez Family Scholarship winners at Comerica Park for years to come."

The first Ordoñez Family Scholarship will be awarded this spring. The application deadline for students interested in the scholarship is April 1, 2008. To be eligible, applicants must be a resident of Southwest Detroit and have attended a Southwest Detroit high school for their entire secondary education. Southwest Detroit is generally defined as the area south of I-94 and west of the I-75/I-96 interchange in the city of Detroit. Students can contact the Community Foundation or their high school guidance counselor for additional information or applications.

"This scholarship is another key investment made in our community by the Detroit Tigers organization and the Ordoñez family," Wendler said. "We look forward to working with them on creating many more opportunities for Southwest Detroit in the future."

The Detroit Tigers Foundation is committed to using the game of baseball to enhance the quality of life in its community with a focus on youth, education and recreation. It aids in the development and funding of innovative programs, including field renovation projects that reach the community with positive messages and promote the good citizenship embodied in the storied history of the Detroit Tigers.

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, founded in 1984, is a permanent community endowment built by gifts from thousands of individuals and organizations committed to the future of Southeast Michigan. The Community Foundation works to improve the region's quality of life by connecting those who care with causes that matter and supports a wide variety of activities benefiting education, arts and culture, health, human services, community development and civic affairs. The Community Foundation has assets of more than $670 million and, since its inception, has distributed more than $295 million through more than 29,000 grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, St. Clair and Livingston counties.

The Southwest Detroit Business Association is an award-winning Community Development Corporation (CDC) committed to fostering innovation, drive and commitment in the community. Working with investors, entrepreneurs, customers and neighbors, it capitalizes on Southwest Detroit's competitive advantage, supporting the community's vision for a healthy, vibrant neighborhood.

Tigers agree to terms on a three-year contract with Nate Robertson

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with lefthanded pitcher Nate Robertson, keeping him in a Tigers uniform through the 2010 season.

Robertson compiled a 9-13 record and 4.76 ERA (177.2IP/94ER) in 30 starts for the Tigers in 2007. He finished third on the club's staff with nine wins and 119 strikeouts last season.

"Nate has been a quality starter during his time with the Tigers," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "We are excited to sign Nate to a long-term contract and we look forward to him being part of our rotation for years to come."

Acquired by the Tigers from the Florida Marlins in a five-player deal on January 11, 2003, Robertson has posted a 42-54 record and 4.53 ERA (824.1IP/415ER) in 136 outings (134 starts) with the Tigers. He has averaged 6.18 strikeouts per nine innings during his time with the Tigers, eighth-best among all pitchers in franchise history with at least 800.0 innings pitched.

Robertson's 134 games started are 10th-most among all lefthanded pitchers in Tigers history. He is 15th among all American League pitchers with the 134 games started since the start of the 2003 season.

With Robertson agreeing to terms on a three-year contract, the Tigers now have four starting pitchers signed or under control through the 2010 season (Jeremy Bonderman, Robertson, Justin Verlander and Dontrelle Willis).

Seay posted a 3-0 record and 2.33 ERA (46.1IP/12ER) in 58 outings for the Tigers last season. He established career highs with 58 appearances, 46.1 innings pitched and 38 strikeouts. Seay allowed 14.3 percent of inherited runners (6x42) to score, third-best among American League relievers.

In 134 appearances at the Major League level, Seay has posted a 4-1 record and 3.97 ERA (118.0IP/52ER).

Cabrera hit .320 (188x588) with 91 runs scored, 38 doubles, two triples, 34 home runs and 119 RBI in 157 games for the Florida Marlins in 2007. He tied for third in the National League with 119 RBI, while he tied for fifth with 34 home runs and tied for eighth with a .320 batting average.

In five seasons at the Major League level with the Marlins, Cabrera compiled a .313 batting average (842x2694), 138 home runs and 523 RBI in 720 games. During that stretch, he finished third in the National League with 523 RBI, sixth with a .313 batting average and ninth with 138 home runs.

Mini season ticket plans are still on sale
27- and 41-game plans are available

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers on Thursday clarified that partial season ticket plans are being actively sold by the club. The partial season plans include both 27-game and 41-game options. However, these packages do not include Opening Day tickets or the option to purchase any post-season games that could be played at Comerica Park in 2008.

The Tigers announced on Monday that they have temporarily halted the sale of full-season, 81-game ticket plans due to demand. The sale of full-season plans had reached a point that Opening Day or post-season options could not be guaranteed. Fans interested in purchasing full-season plans have been placed on a waiting list. Current full-season ticket holders have until February 18 to renew their plans for 2008. Should some customers choose not to renew for 2008, fans on the waiting list would be contacted about purchasing those seats on a full-season basis.

The sale of individual game tickets will begin on Saturday, March 1. The Tigers will open the 2008 season at home on Monday, March 31, playing host to the Kansas City Royals at 1:05 p.m.

Tigers agree to terms on five-year contract with Curtis Granderson

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a five-year contract, with a club option for the 2013 season, with outfielder Curtis Granderson.

Granderson hit .302 (185-for-612) with 122 runs scored, 38 doubles, 23 triples, 23 home runs, 74 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 158 games for the Tigers in 2007. He led the American League with 23 triples, while he finished third with 122 runs scored and 84 extra-base hits, fourth with 338 total bases and sixth with a .552 slugging percentage.

"We are excited to have Curtis signed to a long-term contract with the Tigers organization," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "Curtis is one of the best young players in the game and a quality individual that represents the Tigers well both on and off the field."

He became just the second player in major league history to collect at least 30 doubles, 20 triples, 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season, joining Wildfire Schulte (1911). Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins accomplished the feat in 2007 as well to become the third player in major league history.

Granderson leads all American League players with 32 triples since the beginning of the 2006 season, while he is sixth with 212 runs scored and seventh with 599 total bases during the two-year stretch.

In 373 games during his major league career with the Tigers, Granderson is hitting .280 (390-for-1395) with 232 runs scored, 76 doubles, 36 triples, 50 home runs and 162 RBI.

IndyCar series drivers Oriol Servia, Will Power to participate in 'Grand Prix Night' with the Detroit Tigers

DETROIT -- Just days before competing in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," two of the brightest stars in open-wheel racing will visit the Motor City to celebrate Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Night at Comerica Park with the Detroit Tigers baseball club. Oriol Servia and Will Power of the KV Racing Technology IndyCar Series team, will participate in the evening's festivities on Tuesday, May 20 as the Tigers play host to the Seattle Mariners in a 7:05 p.m. contest. Both Servia and Power will be in town to promote the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix - August 29-31, 2008 - just a few days before competing in the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 25.

Servia and Power will sign autographs for fans at Comerica Park prior to the game. In addition, both drivers will be introduced to the crowd on the field in pre-game ceremonies before Power throws out the ceremonial first pitch. Both Servia and Power will be available for media interviews before staying to enjoy some Tiger baseball that evening. Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix show cars will be on display during the game and fans will have the opportunity to win free tickets to the Grand Prix throughout the evening.

While Servia is new to the IndyCar Series, he's certainly not a rookie when it comes to racing at Belle Isle. The 33-year-old native of Catalonia has raced twice at Belle Isle Park, in the Champ Car Series, with a top finish of third in the 2000 Detroit Grand Prix.

"I have some very good memories about the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix because it was my first podium finish in Champ Cars back in 2000," said Servia, who qualified 25th for Sunday's Indy 500. "I remember it was a very good place to race and that the track is very challenging. Overall, I have a lot of good memories from Detroit and I hope to be able to add to them by making the podium again or even doing better this year."

Power, the 2006 Champ Car World Series Rookie of the Year, will be making his first start on the 2.1-mile Belle Isle street circuit later this summer. The 27-year-old Australian driver is an accomplished road racer that's recorded three career open-wheel victories including an impressive win in April at the annual Grand Prix of Long Beach.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at the Tigers game," said Power, who will start 23rd Sunday in his first Indy 500. "Being an Australian I have played cricket so I can throw a ball, but doing it in front of so many people is going to be more nerveracking than driving my race car. I don't mind everyone having a good laugh when I throw the first pitch, but I really don't want to completely embarrass myself, so I have been practicing a bit behind the hospitality unit at the track in Indy throwing a ball against a brick wall."

Fans interested in attending Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Night at Comerica Park on May 20 should visit www.detroittigers.com to purchase tickets or call (866) 66-TIGER.

About the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix

The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix is organized and promoted by a subsidiary of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, whose chairman is Roger Penske. A special charitable organization has been established that enables all net proceeds raised by the Grand Prix to fund measures for the improvement and preservation of Belle Isle. Once again featuring the IndyCar Series and the American Le Mans Series - along with the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship, new for 2008 - the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be held Labor Day weekend, August 29-31, 2008. To learn more about the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, please visit www.detroitgp.com.

Detroit Tigers, Curtis Granderson, and Detroit Free Press promote literacy, character, and mentoring
Curtis Granderson and Tigers mascot Paws to visit Spain Elementary School on June 9th to read to recognize the VIP Mentoring program

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Free Press have launched the fourth year of a literacy partnership with The Character of Champions Covering All the Bases program. The program makes an in-school appearance at Spain Elementary School at 3700 Beaubien Street in Detroit on Monday, June 9, between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm. Approximately 260 third- through fifth-grade students from Spain Elementary, Gompers Elementary, and Fleming Elementary will participate. The event will feature Detroit Tigers player Curtis Granderson, the mascot Paws, Detroit Tigers front office staff, and Detroit Free Press Newspapers In Education personnel reading and discussing positive character traits with students. Students and their mentors from Detroit-based nonprofit VIP Mentoring, which conducts mentoring programs at the Spain, Fleming, and Gompers schools, will also be recognized.

The Character of Champions program was created by Detroit Free Press Newspapers In Education Michigan K.I.D.S., in partnership with the Detroit Tigers, for metro-Detroit and Michigan elementary students. This year's program includes educational lessons on developing positive character traits including integrity, honesty, and discipline. The program's first event this year was in Southfield in May, and two additional in-school appearances will take place in the fall.

"This program creates an opportunity for students to learn about developing positive character traits and qualities while also practicing their reading skills," said Detroit Tigers Manager of Player Relations, Youth, and Sports Programs Sam Abrams. "At this event, we are also able to recognize and celebrate the great strides being made by students and mentors from the VIP Mentoring program held at the Spain, Fleming, and Gompers schools."

The Character of Champions program includes the distribution of a comprehensive, educational supplement for students and classroom posters to schools in metro-Detroit and across the state. Personal and professional stories and activities about character development with special features from Curtis Granderson, his teammates Nate Robertson and Placido Polanco, and Tigers President, CEO, and General Manager David Dombrowski are included.

Program sponsors are the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Detroit Medical Center, The Skillman Foundation, Michigan Orthopedic Services, and UPS. Sponsors make it possible for materials to be provided free of charge to schools in metro-Detroit and across Michigan. Since the program's inception in 2005, Detroit Free Press Newspapers In Education has delivered over 381,370 student materials to schools in 75 Michigan counties.

Detroit Media Partnership's Newspapers In Education's Michigan K.I.D.S. is a literacy nonprofit supporting the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News. The nonprofit is dedicated to strengthening literacy and education by providing educators with classroom newspapers, quality instructional materials, and training that will enrich the curriculum and assist in teaching reading, writing, and thinking skills through the use of newspapers.

The Detroit Tigers organization is proud of its long-standing tradition of supporting a wide variety of community and charitable organizations and their activities. Every year the Tigers organization focuses its community and charitable giving in the areas of youth, education, and recreation, and strives to improve the quality of life through the game of baseball.

Tigers place Bonderman on 15-day disabled list

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today placed righthanded pitcher Jeremy Bonderman on the 15-day disabled list.

Bonderman was examined yesterday at the Detroit Medical Center and it was determined he has a blood clot of the axillary vein due to thoracic outlet compression syndrome. Bonderman underwent a thromblysis last night, followed by an angioplasty this morning at the Detroit Medical Center, performed by Dr. Monte Harvill under the supervision of team physician Dr. Stephen Lemos. He will undergo further examination of his condition at a later date.

Bonderman most likely will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2008 season.

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers on Thursday named Ron Colangelo the club's new Vice President, Communications, effective on Monday, June 16. He will oversee the day-to-day operation of the club's media relations, business communications and broadcasting areas.

Colangelo has extensive experience in the sports entertainment industry, having worked with organizations in Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Hockey League. Since April of 2007, he has been Managing Director of Global Network Communications, a New York City-based strategic marketing and communications firm.

"We are fortunate to have a person with such diverse experience and expertise in the sports industry to join our organization," said David Dombrowski, President, CEO and General Manager of the Tigers. "We are very excited about welcoming Ron to the Tigers' family."

Colangelo's baseball career started in January of 1990 when he was named Director of Communications for the West Palm Beach Expos. He remained in that role until May of 1993 when he joined the Florida Panthers as a Public/Media Relations Associate.

A return to baseball came in January of 1996 when he was named Director, Baseball Information and Publicity, for the Florida Marlins. He was promoted to Vice President, Communications, and oversaw five departments for the Marlins, including media relations, broadcasting, creative services, in-game entertainment, and public and community affairs. Colangelo remained with the Marlins through February of 2002 before being named Vice President, Public Relations, for the New York Jets, a position he held until April of 2007.

Colangelo is a graduate of William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. He is also an accomplished marathon runner, having completed races in Chicago, San Diego, Boston, Los Angeles and New York City.
