MLB Network to add August telecasts
Thursday afternoon games will supplement night contests

By Tom Singer / MLB.com

08/05/09 2:43 PM ET

The MLB Network will launch a new lineup of live afternoon telecasts with Thursday's game between the Rockies and the Phillies from Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park.

That telecast will also lead off four Thursday attractions, with next week's game featuring the Tigers at the Red Sox.

The new programming was revealed on Wednesday, when the Network announced its game broadcast schedule through Aug. 29.

The added Thursday afternoon telecasts will be followed by the regularly scheduled Thursday Night Baseball, treating fans to doubleheaders as the division races head into the stretch.

"Baseball is unique in that it has several weekday afternoon games," Tony Petitti, president and CEO of MLB Network noted in a statement, "and we see this as a great way for MLB Network to distinguish itself.

MLB Network live game schedule

Through Aug. 29, 2009 (all times Eastern)
Aug. 6 - 1 p.m. Rockies @ Phillies
Aug. 6 - 7 p.m. Red Sox @ Yankees
Aug. 8 - 8 p.m. Cubs @ Rockies
Aug. 13 - 1:30 p.m. Tigers at Red Sox
Aug. 13 - 7 p.m. Astros @ Marlins
Aug. 15 - 8 p.m. Red Sox @ Rangers
Aug. 20 - 1 p.m. Mariners @ Tigers
Aug. 20 - 7 p.m. Diamondbacks @ Phillies
Aug. 22 - 8 p.m. Giants @ Rockies
Aug. 27 - 3 p.m. Dodgers @ Rockies
Aug. 27 - 7 p.m. White Sox @ Red Sox
Aug. 29 - 9 p.m. Rockies @ Giants

"We wanted to provide fans with as many live games as possible and we're looking forward to airing matchups from some of the top contenders in the American and National Leagues," Petitti added.

The debut Thursday afternoon game will precede the Red Sox at the Yankees -- who are still looking for their first win of the season over Boston following eight straight losses to their AL East rivals.

MLB Network's Thursday afternoon and Saturday Night Baseball games will be simulcasts of local broadcasts, including local announcers. Games will be blacked out in each team's home television territory. Viewers in areas subject to blackouts will be provided with alternate programming.

The August schedule of 12 game telecasts released on Wednesday will feature 14 different Major League teams. The red-hot Rockies, mounting an NL West challenge to the Dodgers, will be front-and-center with five appearances.
