I suppose. Actually if they're boys that'd be better as the US hasn't ever won the men's beach volleyball gold. Maybe they can be multi-sport athletes? We need a lot of help in the winter games. Make them move to Denver or something.

Yeah he is!

For an encore, Natalie Coughlin picks up a gold in the 100m backstroke. Americans pick up bronze in the men's 200m freestyle and women's 100m backstroke. Up next is the men's 100m backstroke....

China leads the overall standings by virtue of having more gold medals (11) than the United States (7). The United States has the most medals with 21 while China is second with 18.

In men's basketball...

USA beats Angola but only by 21 points
They're in first overall in their group after 2 games.

In softball....

USA destroys Venezuela with the mercy rule - 11-0 in 5 innings.
Jennie Finch pitched 4 innings of no-hit softball and a teammate finished the no-hitter.

In women's soccer, USA beats New Zealand 4-0 and wins its group. They will play Canada in the round of 8.

Some guy from Togo wins bronze in one of the kayaking events. It is the first-ever medal for a Togolese athlete. Despite being born in a French-speaking country and training in France, he gave an interview in English afterwards.

Another good day at the pool. Phelps wins 2 more gold. 5 events, 5 golds, 5 world records.

US takes the silver in women's gymnastics and the Chinese win gold

US has the most medals with 27 while China has 24.
US has 10 golds, but China has 16

For our Swiss posters....

Switzerland has 2 bronze medals, both in cycling. There's still plenty of time (and Federer) but they last failed to win gold in the summer in 1988. They, of course, are better in the winter than in the summer.

Baseball is just starting. The US plays in 2 hours. China loses its opener to Canada 10-0

USA versus Nigeria (men's soccer) is underway on USA. This is the last group game. A draw and they are guaranteed a trip to the quarterfinals. A win and they are guaranteed winning the group. The 2nd place team in the group plays Argentina so a win is highly preferable as Argentina is very good.

Blowing it right at the end vs. the Netherlands is really going to cost them.

In the other game, Japan and the Netherlands are tied at 0. If the US loses, the Netherlands must lose or tie or the US is eliminated.

2-0 Nigeria and this is all but over. The Netherlands leads 1-0 so unless something changes in the last 10 minutes the US is out. They deserved it though - you don't play 87 minutes of a 90 minute game a man short and you don't give up the equalizer 3 minutes into stoppage time in the second half.

USA trails S. Korea 2-1 in baseball but it's not on TV (yet) and the internet feed is hard to watch since my internet sucks so I won't update that. Besides, it's almost 4 AM so I need to go to bed when soccer is over.
