Council president prepares to run Detroit

DETROIT -- Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr. said this morning he's developed an initial plan in case Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick resigns or is removed and Cockrel has to take over.

Cockrel said he's talked with people inside and outside city hall to develop a first 100-day plan, but declined to get into specifics.

"It's important to be prepared in the event it comes down," Cockrel said. "I think I have to give thought to it."

Cockrel would become mayor if Kilpatrick resigns or is removed, generally until a special election could be held. Kilpatrick can only be removed from office if convicted of a felony and his trial on eight felonies is expected to take months. Kilpatrick has vowed not to resign and said he'll be vindicated of the charges.

"I don't see a resignation come anytime soon," Cockrel said.

Saw today on WXYZ noon news that for his arraignment, Mayor Dumbass feigned an appearance, using a police escort and Buick Escalade to distract the media into thinking he was coming in the front of the courthouse when actually he was already being arraigned, having entered through a back entrance.

He KNOWS he is guilty!! Why would he waste $400 of taxpayer money right there to fake out the media?

They claim it costs like 25,000 a year to keep someone in jail for a year!

I rather see Kwame get a huge fine, probation, community service and removed from office for good if convicted than spending tax dollars to keep him in prison for 20 years.

Scandal leads to snub of Detroit
A second conference decides to pull out

The legal problems surrounding Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick have prompted another conference to bypass the city, according to a spokeswoman for the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Renee Monforton said the group, which she would not identify, cited the scandal as the reason for changing its mind and not coming to Detroit.

"It may not be the best time to host their conference," she said Wednesday. "They're excited to come to Detroit at some future time."

Monforton said the group was from out of state and included a few hundred people. She said the economic impact would be "far less than $1 million."

The move follows the decision by the National Conference of Black Mayors to change its conference location from Detroit to New Orleans.

Kilpatrick spokeswoman Denise Tolliver released a statement emphasizing the numerous events still scheduled to come to Detroit, a point that Monforton echoed.

"This year alone there are approximately 30 events bringing more than $143 million in revenue to our city. This is in large part due" to "the mayor's leadership," the statement read. "When seeking to bring conventions to our city, it is unrealistic to expect that we will win each and every bid.

"Although we are clearly in a political climate where negativity rules, it must be acknowledged that the mayor's talent for attracting business is one of the most decisive factors in bringing conventions and events to Detroit."
