TIGERS CORNER
Granderson, Ordoñez, Cabrera, Guillen back

BY JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • March 26, 2009

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- After more than three weeks of authoring some unfamiliar-looking lineups, Tigers manager Jim Leyland should savor a slice of normalcy tonight.

Curtis Granderson. Magglio Ordoñez. Miguel Cabrera. Carlos Guillen. All are expected to be on the field when the Tigers host Tampa Bay.

Leyland had considered bringing them on Wednesday's trip to play the Mets, but decided against it. He said Granderson was ill with an intestinal ailment earlier in the week.

"We could've rushed them on the bus, actually," Leyland said. "But I said, 'You know what? Let's give them a little time to recoup.' I feel real good about it."

The four worked out in Lakeland on Wednesday with hitting coach Lloyd McClendon. First base coach Andy Van Slyke also took the outfielders -- Granderson, Ordoñez and Guillen -- through defensive drills.

STANDOUTS:
Among the notable performances in Wednesday's game:

Jeff Larish: He went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs in a showcase of the left-handed power that many scouts think will help him make the Opening Day roster.

Scott Williamson: His streak of five scoreless outings ended with a thud. He allowed five earned runs on five hits in one inning. Before the game, Leyland said he wanted Williamson to pitch tonight, as well, to see how his arm responded when pitching on back-to-back days. His high pitch count ruined those plans.

Ryan Perry: The hard-throwing prospect, who remains a candidate to make the Opening Day roster, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings ... but he also walked two batters.

Juan Rincon: He pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Danny Worth: The prospect subbed for injured Adam Everett and went 1-for-2 while impressing Leyland with his defense. "Worth can play shortstop anywhere right now -- trust me," Leyland said.
