Guillen out with leg injury, Polanco back in the starting lineup

The Tigers thought they were about to move one step closer to restoring their everyday lineup.

Instead, they sustained another injury.

Carlos Guillen’s Detroit debut at third base was postponed today, after he fouled a ball off his leg on Wednesday night.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said the leg swelled up so much that Guillen “can’t walk.” He won’t be in uniform today, and Leyland isn’t sure when he will be able to return.

At this point, it’s possible that he will miss multiple games. Leyland, though, did not rule out Guillen returning on Friday night.

Meanwhile, second baseman Placido Polanco (inflamed nerve) was in the starting lineup for the first time since Friday.

“Add one, lose one,” Leyland said.

Designated hitter Gary Sheffield received a second cortisone shot in his ailing right shoulder on Wednesday night. He still hopes to play Friday against the Los Angeles Angels, but he’s not certain that he will be ready.

That's going to be the story for the Tiger's this year....one injury after another after another. As frustrated as it makes me...I'm not suprised one bit.

Guillen scratched with bruised knee

DETROIT -- Just when it looked like the Tigers would finally get their entire starting lineup back, another prominent hitter hobbled into their clubhouse.

Carlos Guillen was scratched for Thursday afternoon's series finale against the Rangers with a bruised right knee. He did not dress for the game and received treatment from the athletic training staff throughout the day. He is listed as day-to-day.

"He can't even walk," manager Jim Leyland said. "He might play tomorrow. He might not play for a week."

With Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco back, and Gary Sheffield hopeful for Friday, it looked like the Tigers had the lineup that people predicted would score 1,000 runs together this weekend for the first time since late in Spring Training.

But then Guillen fouled a pitch off his knee on Wednesday night.

He finished the at-bat, smashing a long single off the wall, and then even stole second base "just to test it out." After the game, Guillen iced the knee and said he didn't feel much pain, but the next morning was a different story.

"We just can't get our team together," Leyland said. "Hopefully, one of these days we'll get to see our team."

Guillen has been one of the most consistent hitters in an inconsistent offense. His fourth three-hit game of the year on Wednesday raised his average to .328, which ranks in a tie for sixth in the American League. He leads the Tigers with eight doubles and a .432 on-base percentage.

Leyland recently named Guillen, the former starting first baseman, the team's new third baseman, which will take effect when both Guillen and Sheffield return.

Ryan Raburn got his first start of the season at third and batted ninth on Thursday. Magglio Ordonez started as the designated hitter, Brandon Inge started behind the plate and Marcus Thames batted third and played right field.

Well, hopefully we will be able to count on Polly staying healthy and Guillen coming back healthy, and we'll be fine. And then when Zoom and Rodney get back, I have no clue what we should do, everything's going pretty well with the exception of the Robertson woes.

I just wish I was going to tomorrow's game...Galarraga starts!

I'm so going tomorrow. Thinking by mid July the standings are gonna be better than they are now for us.

It sounds like a better day tomorrow all around!

DETROIT -- Carlos Guillen could return to the Tigers lineup for their nationally televised series finale against the Angels on Sunday night.

Guillen, who could barely walk Thursday, said on Saturday afternoon that playing on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball is a strong possibility. The Tigers' new third baseman strolled around the clubhouse with ease, unlike the previous two days, and worked out in the team weight room with no pain to show for it.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Guillen, as of Saturday afternoon, had a 60 percent chance of starting Sunday.

"If he tells me he can play, he'll play," Leyland said.

Guillen has missed the last two games after fouling a pitch off his knee in Wednesday's win over Texas. He finished the at-bat, singling off the wall, and even stole second base. But the next day he had trouble walking.

The starting first baseman to start the season, Guillen's return would mark his first start at third base this season. Leyland announced on Tuesday that Guillen and former starting third baseman Miguel Cabrera would swap corner infield positions. Guillen has not started at third since 2003 when he played for Seattle.

With recent returns of Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco and Gary Sheffield, Guillen's insertion back in the lineup would give the Tigers their entire starting lineup healthy for the first time this season.

Guillen has been one of the Tigers' most consistent hitters this season. He leads the team with a .338 average and eight doubles, to go with three home runs and 11 RBIs.
