| Movers seen at Manoogian By Christy Arboscello • Free Press Staff Writer • September 13, 2008
A moving truck left the Manoogian Mansion at 4 p.m. today, just five days before Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is expected to vacate the residence.
The North American Van Lines vehicle pulled out of the driveway about a half hour before a black Cadillac Escalade left, followed by a black sedan. Immediately after, a black Chevrolet Impala backed into the mansion’s driveway to block the entrance.
According to North American, the parent company has three agents that regularly service the city of Detroit. No one could immediately be reached today at those offices in Redford, Warren and Farmington Hills.
City officials permitted Kilpatrick, who has pleaded guilty to two felonies and no contest to a third, to stay in the mansion until he officially steps down as mayor on Thursday. It’s unclear where Kilpatrick’s family will live next. Buzz earlier this week had them settling in a Grosse Pointe Shores house worth nearly $1.6 million, but that rumor has been dispelled.
James Canning, deputy press secretary for Kilpatrick, did not return calls seeking comment this evening.

| Saturday, September 13, 2008 Moving van leaves Manoogian, goes to Oakland County storage facility Candice Williams / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- A moving van, loaded with belongings from the Manoogian Mansion, the mayoral residence, pulled into a storage facility Saturday evening in Oakland County, according to Detroit News reporting partner WXYZ-TV Channel 7.
Earlier in the day, movers placed boxes into a moving truck outside the mansion. A blue-and-white North American moving truck was sitting in the driveway at 1:30 p.m. with an entourage of black vehicles, including an SUV, parked nearby.
At least two men were carrying boxes and placing them in the truck during the afternoon rain showers.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's spokesman James Canning said, "I am unable to comment about any of the details in regards to the first family moving from the Manoogian."
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felonies last week and his resignation becomes official Sept. 18. He had said he would move from the mansion before that date.
As part of Kilpatrick's plea deal, he will pay $1 million in restitution and serve four months in jail. The deal halted Gov. Jennifer Granholm's hearings on his removal. It also ended Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's and Attorney General Mike Cox's prosecution of Kilpatrick on multiple felonies.
The Detroit City Council had asked Granholm to remove Kilpatrick from office after the city paid $8.4 million to settle a police whistle-blower case. Published text messages between the mayor and his then-chief of staff, Christine Beatty, indicated Kilpatrick and Beatty had an affair and conspired to fire police officer Gary Brown. During the whistle-blower trial in 2007, the pair had denied having an affair and conspiring to fire Brown.
Kilpatrick also had been accused of assaulting a police officer when the officer attempted to serve Bobby Ferguson, a city contractor and close friend of Kilpatrick, with a subpoena in the text message case.
City Council President Ken Cockrel will become mayor Sept. 19.

DETROIT -- Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy shares some of her insights into the Kwame Kilpatrick case with WXYZ-TV Channel 7's editorial chief on Sunday.
Worthy will be the guest of Chuck Stokes' weekly "Spotlight on the News."
The show airs at 11:30 a.m. Sundays on Channel 7.
Worthy will discuss a range of topics related to the Kilpatrick case, including the aftermath of the text message scandal, its impact on her, what message it sends and the future, Stokes said Friday.
"I'll be revealing a lot more of the things I went through and the things my office was asked to do that I thought were just terrible in terms of what this case costs and what could have cost justice in this county," Worthy tells Stokes in a video clip on WXYZ's Web site, www.wxyz.com , that gives viewers a short preview of the show.
"There was a lot of negativity directed toward me and my office," she said.
Stokes said one of the most intriguing things Worthy talks about is how the case reflects on the legal community.
"I think one of the most interesting parts of the interview is (Worthy) talks about her reflections on the parade of lawyers we saw along with the Kilpatrick case," he said.

| Thursday, September 18, 2008 Kilpatrick, family leave town on vacation after judge gives OK Tanveer Ali and Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News
ROMULUS -- A little after 6 p.m., Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his wife, Carlita Kilpatrick and their three children arrived at Metro Airport and checked in six bags on Flight 847 of American Airlines bound for Dallas.
One onlooker said, "We love you, Mayor."
The mayor did not answer questions from the media, but said, "Y'all have a good one," as he headed for the security check-in. He was briefly delayed, as one of three body guards went back to the American Airlines check-in to retrieve a forgotten carry-on bag.
Passenger Alan Jones said, "I like the man, but he just wasn't ready to be mayor."
Kilpatrick's last day in office was Thursday. On Friday City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. takes over as the city's mayor. Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felonies two weeks ago. A city official in Detroit cannot hold office once he or she has been convicted of a felony.
Thursday morning, Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner agreed in an emergency hearing to ease Kilpatrick's bond restrictions that have kept him within the tri-county area. The judge gave immediate approval for the mayor to leave for a trip he said involved "special circumstances." He also will allow Kilpatrick to request more out-of-state travel on 48 hours notice to the court.
Kilpatrick will return from the trip on or before Sept. 29. Kilpatrick's lawyers said another out-of-state trip may be requested before Oct. 28, when Kilpatrick is to be sentenced by Groner and begin serving 120 days in jail.
"The court would first note that this is a little unusual pending a sentence where a defendant has plead guilty on two separate files three different counts and is pending sentence where jail time is mandated by a plea and sentence agreement," the judge said. "However, this is not your typical case in a sense that the defendant is still the mayor of the city of Detroit I think until tonight, midnight."
Talks about the trip have been ongoing since Kilpatrick's resignation, but the prosecutor's office objected to him leaving the state while still serving as mayor.
Groner said Kilpatrick's lawyers disclosed in the privacy of his chambers the destination and purpose of the approved travel. Flood said Kilpatrick already bought tickets.
"The prosecutors and the attorney general's office are fully aware of where he is going and why he is going and they have no objection and therefore I have no objection," Groner said. "And obviously, if he goes somewhere else than where he is supposed to be, that would be a violation and certainly not something the court would not allow."
Kilpatrick didn't attend the hearing, under agreement between his lawyers, the prosecutors and the judge. The lawyers negotiated terms of the deal in the judge's chambers this morning while Groner's courtroom filled with lawyers and defendants waiting for action on an already crowded docket of regular business. The judge noted the emergency hearing called for by Kilpatrick's lawyers wasn't on his docket for the day.
Todd Flood, one of the mayor's attorneys, argued in court that the destination of the upcoming trip must remain confidential.
"We would like to keep those plans private, judge, because of the security of his family and the hounding of the media over him and his family," Flood said.
Representatives of the Wayne County Prosecutors Office and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox agreed to the changes and the terms of keeping Kilpatrick's travel plans secret. The judge said it was unusual to allow such travel for a defendant who is free on bond pending sentencing on three felony charges.
"But, this is an unusual case," Groner said.
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty Sept. 4 to two counts of obstruction of justice brought by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and no contest to an assault charge brought by the Attorney General. He will be sentenced Oct. 28 and under terms of his negotiated plea-bargain, he will spend 120 days in jail, pay $1 million in restitution to the city and he is barred from seeking elected office during five years of probation.
Assistant Prosecutor Athena Siringas reminded the court that failure to abide by the court's conditions on his travel could result in the withdrawal of Kilpatrick's plea agreement -- leaving him open to sentencing at the discretion of the judge including prison. Groner pointed out that in that case, Kilpatrick couldn't withdraw his plea and would be forced to serve any term behind bars that the judge feels is appropriate.
Flood assured the judge that Kilpatrick will be told, "If he failed to appear in this particular case, the consequences would be dire and severe and I don't think that's an issue."
Maria Miller, spokeswoman for Worthy, said allowing out-of-state travel for a person on bond isn't common, but "has happened before."
The court's major concerns in such cases are only whether the person on bond is considered a safety risk to the public and whether the defendant can be trusted to return for sentencing. Miller said the prosecutor agrees with the court in believing Kilpatrick's travel poses no threat to public safety and believes he will return as required.

| Wednesday, January 28, 2009 Kilpatrick wants to pack up, leave Mich. Paul Egan / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Kwame Kilpatrick's plans to leave Michigan will make a political comeback by the former mayor more difficult, analysts said Tuesday.
Kilpatrick alluded to a Detroit comeback in a Sept. 4 address to the city just hours after he pleaded guilty to felony obstruction of justice charges.
But today, a Wayne County judge is to consider Kilpatrick's request to move himself and his family not only out of Detroit but out of Michigan, once he is released from the Wayne County Jail next week.
Reaction is mixed. Pundits say Kilpatrick would be doing what is best for his family by leaving Michigan but at the same time would be making any revival of his political career more difficult.
"To me, it's a surprise," said Eric Foster, director of political strategy for Urban Consulting Group LLC in Detroit. "He's not the type of person who under normal circumstances is going to just walk away from what he believes is his right."
Critics of the former mayor are split on the move.
"Good riddance," said James Lundberg, 69, a retired banker in Macomb Township. "I just feel that with him around, he's just likely to stir up more trouble for the people who are in office."
But Jeffrey Girrbach of White Lake Township said he is opposed to Kilpatrick leaving hard-hit Michigan.
Kilpatrick "should have to not only stay here and grind it out like the rest of us, he should have to go door to door and personally give Detroit citizens restitution money."
Wayne Circuit Judge David Groner, who will today consider Kilpatrick's request to leave the state, ordered the ex-mayor to pay $1 million in restitution to the city of Detroit when he sentenced Kilpatrick to 120 days in jail in October on obstruction of justice charges.
The former mayor has paid $7,500 in restitution, his Detroit attorney James C. Thomas said Tuesday. Kilpatrick's desire to pay the full amount during his five-year period of probation is a key reason he wants to leave the state, Thomas said in a court filing late Monday.
Thomas would not say where outside the state Kilpatrick has a job interview or where he wants to settle. His family has already left Michigan and Kilpatrick wants to join them, Thomas said.
Destination Texas or D.C.?
Speculation has centered on Dallas, Texas and Washington, D.C. Compuware spokeswoman Lisa Elkin on Tuesday denied reports that Compuware Chairman Peter Karmanos Jr. has offered Kilpatrick a job as a federal lobbyist.
It's not clear whether Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will oppose Kilpatrick's request to leave the state.
Foster said he would have expected Kilpatrick to immediately set to work in Detroit on reclaiming his reputation. But from the standpoint of Kilpatrick's concern for his wife, Carlita, and his two young sons, the move makes sense, Foster said.
"Right now, the folks who are anti-Kilpatrick are definitely more numerous than the pro-Kilpatrick," Foster said. "You risk your children, your wife and yourself having to hear that continuously."
Detroit political consultant Adolph Mongo, a Kilpatrick supporter, also said it makes sense from a personal and family perspective for Kilpatrick to go elsewhere to seek a fresh start.
However, "if you want to be in the political spotlight you stay here," Mongo said. "I think it's going to be real tough for him to go away and then come back and say ... 'I want to start where I left off.' "
Common practice
Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said it is common for probationers such as Kilpatrick to move to other states if they have jobs lined up.
All U.S. states are parties to an agreement whereby they accept probationers from other states, Marlan said.
