Who will run for Detroit's Mayor position?

DETROIT -- Businessman and Hall of Famer Dave Bing is getting closer to announcing a campaign for Detroit mayor.

Bing told the Associated Press on Wednesday that a State Police investigation into a possible assault charge against Kwame Kilpatrick has pushed him into seriously considering a jump into next year's campaign.

"It's one more nail in the coffin," said Bing.

Bing told The Detroit News Wednesday that he's been thinking about a mayoral run more in recent weeks.

"I'm a lot closer," he said.

Bing, who now lives in Franklin in suburban Detroit, would have to move into the city to run. He is one of the few businessmen openly critical of Kilpatrick.

DETROIT -- Businessman Dave Bing said he is ready to move into the city in advance of a possible run at becoming Detroit's next mayor.

Bing, also a Hall of Fame former NBA guard, lives in Franklin and would have to move to the city to run, he said during an interview this morning on the Paul W. Smith show on WJR-AM (760).

He said he has not decided for certain to run and that his family has concerns about him tossing his hat into the political arena.

"I think there are mixed emotions at this time and concerns," he said of his immediate family.

Bing said he likes Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick personally, but thinks the time has come for a new mayor.

"These past several months have been tough on him and tougher on the city," Bing said. "I don't think he will come out of this unscathed. We have to start thinking about what happens after Kwame."

When asked why more business people have not come forward as the mayor battles perjury charges stemming from the ongoing text message scandal, Bing replied that a fear of being labeled racist has kept executives quiet.

"Most of the business giants are white males," Bing said, reiterating that the executives are afraid of being called racists for calling for the mayor's ouster.

Bing said he has placed a down payment on one of the condos in a project he is building, but the home will not be ready soon enough for his family to move into if he decides to run for mayor. So he is looking at other places to call home in the city in the event he runs for office, Bing said.
