Sheffield rejoins Tigers, to start at DH

DETROIT -- Gary Sheffield rejoined the Tigers on Tuesday and said he's ready to contribute.

That was good enough for manager Jim Leyland, who put Sheffield into the seventh slot in the batting order as designated hitter for the 7 p.m. game against the Cardinals.

Sheffield, who was on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique muscle injury, was penciled into the lineup as a designated hitter in the seventh spot for a 7 p.m. game against the Cardinals.

"That's a pretty impressive guy batting seventh," Leyland said.

Sheffield said his oblique muscles and ribs are pain-free and that allows him to swing a bat "free and easy."

Sheffield said an added benefit to the time off was a chance to rest his problematic right shoulder.

"I feel like my shoulder benefited the most out of all of this," Sheffield said. "I was able to rest and not have to do anything with it."

Sheffield said he's as healthy as at any point this season, but would say only that his shoulder is "better."
