In their search for a center fielder, the Padres took a brief look at Tigers minor leaguer Cameron Maybin, an elite prospect who was the key player to Detroit's package that brought Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Dontrelle Willis. The Padres weren't serious about getting Maybin because the price would have been too high, but General Manager Kevin Towers said Maybin left a strong impression on him.
"That kid's got a chance to be a star," Towers said. "He's a stud. He's got a lot of talent."
Towers termed it a "great trade for both teams" and marveled at how powerful the Tigers lineup will be.
Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said another prospect acquired in the trade, left-handed pitcher Adam Miller, is ready to help the Marlins. "Miller, we expect to be in our rotation, and Maybin, the center fielder, hopefully will be there very soon," Beinfest said.
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said the franchise's owner, Mike Ilitch, got the ball rolling. Following reports that talks between the Angels and the Marlins had stalled, Ilitch asked Dombrowski to explore a deal with Florida. Beinfest, by the way, sounded pretty ticked off today when commenting on reports that his club hadn't negotiated in good faith with the Angels and Dodgers. Angels owner Arte Moreno had complained publicly that the Marlins, in talks with both the Dodgers and Angeles, switched players after trade scenarios had been negotiated.
Beinfest said the complaints were "unproffessional" and a "little off base." He added: "There's never a deal until there's a deal. In that situation, there were no deals."
Beinfest said it was an emotional process, because he is so fond of Cabrera and Willis, two players who helped the Marlins win the 2003 World Series. "Dontrelle Willis was the first my trade of my career...it's tough," Beinfest said.
Don't discount the low-budget, youthful Marlins from blossoming in short order, said Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who directed Florida to its World Series title in 1997. "One of the biggest things people forget is that in the last 10 years, the Florida Marlins, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are the only teams that have won multiple World Series championships," Leyland said.

left-handed pitcher Adam Miller Adam Miller is RIGHT HANDED! And he's a Cleveland Indian (or more precisely, a Buffalo Bison)! That's it! How do I get a job as a writer? I barely even looked at this article and I noticed this mistake. I noticed a mistake on two other articles in the last 24 hours. Who edits these?
