Minneapolis -- The Royals have activated third baseman Alex Gordon after placing second baseman Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe South) on the 15-day disabled list.
Getz strained his right oblique muscle in batting practice before Friday night's game against Minnesota and was a late scratch.
"With (the injury) being where it is and what it is," manager Trey Hillman told the Kansas City Star, "we just thought it was a smarter thing to do, earlier in the season, to make sure we get that thing healthy. That precipitated bringing Alex back."
Getz had been hitting .207 with no extra-base hits and an RBI in nine games.
Gordon was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and was expected to be in Minneapolis in time for Saturday's game against the Twins. He began the season on a rehab assignment for a right thumb he broke diving into second base in a March 9 spring training game.
Gordon played in 49 games last season for the Royals after having early season hip surgery. He hit .232 with six home runs and 22 RBI.
Giants' Rowand on DL after being struck in face by ball
Giants CF Aaron Rowand will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with two small fractures in his left cheek and a mild concussion after he was hit with a fastball by Dodgers RHP Vicente Padilla.
Rowand was hit in the face in the fifth inning of Friday night's 10-8 loss, when the ball struck the side of his helmet as he turned to get out of the way. He never lost consciousness and was able to leave the field under his own power before he was taken to a hospital for a CT scan.
More personnel.
Indians closer Kerry Wood, sidelined since spring training with a sore back, threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday.
"He looked great," Indians manager Manny Acta said.
Acta said Wood will face hitters in a simulated game next week when the Indians play in Minnesota.
Wood is making $10.5 million in the last season of a two-year contract.
... RHP Freddy Garcia, who has struggled in two outings, will have his next start skipped in the White Sox rotation.
"It's just a break," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's not out of the rotation."
Around the horn
Former Tiger Pudge Rodriguez continued his torrid start to the season for the Nationals. He went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in their 8-0 victory over the Brewers. He is hitting .419.
... Former Tiger Curtis Granderson upped his average to .326 after going 2-for-4 with a run scored in the Yankees' 7-3 win over the Rangers.
