CINCINNATI -- Right-hander Brad Penny was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, retroactive to Saturday, with inflammation of the bursa sac and mild tendinitis in his right shoulder.
In a corresponding roster move, left-hander Eric Stults was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Stults will likely take Penny's next scheduled start, on Friday against the Indians.
Penny had complained of discomfort in the shoulder for more than a month without missing a start, but the pain worsened during pregame warmups before his last start, on Saturday against Detroit. An MRI performed on Monday revealed no structural damage.
Penny is 5-9 with a 5.88 ERA this season. The two-time All-Star was 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007.
Stults is 5-6 with a 3.59 ERA through 14 starts for Las Vegas this season.
