| It is amazing! Wonder how many they will sell today; I think the box office is open from 10-2 today plus phone and internet sales and Meijer too!
Could all the tickets be gone before Opening Day?

Now, That's the Ticket ...
Tickets? Who's got tickets?
That day hasn't just arrived. It's smacked you, me and everyone else from Portage to Port Huron right up side the noggin. With some 26,000 season tickets already accounted for, and another 202,000 single-game tickets moved just this weekend, the Tigers already have sold more than 2.3 million seats, which, for perspective, eclipses the mark of the 1987 playoff-bound Tigers, who even played at the far-more-spacious Corner. All this while Punxsutawney Phil says there still are four more weeks of spring training.
The team that drew a franchise-record 3 million-plus a year ago will shatter that, perhaps even by the time the Royals roll down Woodward Ave. for that March 31 kickoff.
And for this unprecedented buzz -- please feel free to make yourselves at home, Jacque, Edgar, Dontrelle and Miguel -- who do we have to thank? Why Mike Ilitch, of course. He (finally) hired the right folks. He (finally) opened up the purse strings. He (finally) made this team a priority.
So, yes, Mr. Ilitch deserves one hearty thank you.
That said, Mr. Ilitch has us to thank, too. Just consider that not once in any non-strike-shortened season did the Tigers finish last in American League attendance under his watch, despite three last-place league finishes, four last-place division finishes and a string of 12 straight losing seasons that ended, mercifully, in 2006.
So, if the Pizza King is looking for that perfect gift ...
Giving back
They've handed out the Bobbleheads, they've shot off countless metric tons of fireworks, they've let thousands of little rugrats trip over, errr, run the bases, they've given away enough baseball bats to make a log cabin or 50, and do we really need another magnet schedule?
Frankly, it's time for something fresh and truly appreciative: It's time for "2003: Memorial Day," which is not unlike Harry Doyle's Die Hard Night in "Major League." My premise is pretty simple: Anybody with a ticket stub to any Tigers game in 2003 gets free admission, the perfect thank-you for unconditional loyalty.
Essentially, it'd be a splendid way of sharing the pie with all the folks who came to dinner way back when the cupboards were bare. (Or stocked full of goods well past their expiration date.)
You could dress up the shindig, too. Trenton native Steve Avery -- remember, he was on that team; his highlight, FYI, was surrendering the Tigers' lone home run to Barry Bonds -- could throw out the first pitch. Fans in section 119 could be treated to free hot dogs. Every fan who participated in the promotion could move down five rows every other inning. Brandon Inge, Nate Robertson, Fernando Rodney and Ramon Santiago -- the four current Tigers who suffered with all of us -- could be treated to a belated collective standing ovation. Meanwhile, departed members of that team could be positioned at stations around the park; not so much to sign autographs, but rather to sell peanuts and soda. (Manning the Brushfire Grill: Nate Cornejo and Gene Kingsale.) And it all could be capped off with a touching, or comedic, video montage and postgame concert.
Sounds cooky, right? Yeah, I know. But what a gesture.
Think of the headlines. Think of the goodwill. Think of the fans' reaction. Money couldn't buy that publicity.
Yet coincidentally, it's money that would be the chief reason this never would happen, not this year or next or ever, and not even for a lowly Rays or Royals game. Because, well, no, it wouldn't be profitable (at least not immediately). And so, no, it wouldn't do wonders for the bottom line (at least not immediately). Thus, Tigers brass surely would say amongst themselves, it just wouldn't be worth their time.
And frankly, that's a shame.
Because somehow, someway, 2003 was worth ours.
