140-year-old lobster freed

NYC eatery grants freedom to lobster centenarian

NEW YORK – A 140-year-old lobster once destined for a dinner plate received the gift of life Friday from a Park Avenue seafood restaurant.

George, the 20-pound supercentenarian crustacean, was freed by City Crab and Seafood in New York City.

"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace," said Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said the group asked City Crab to return George to the Atlantic Ocean after a diner saw him at the restaurant, where steamed Maine lobster sells for $27 per pound. George had been caught off Newfoundland, Canada and lived in the tank for about 10 days before his release.

Some scientists estimate lobsters can live to be more than 100 years old. PETA and the restaurant guessed George's age at about 140, using a rule of thumb based on the creature's weight.

He was to be released Saturday near Kennebunkport, Maine, in an area where lobster trapping is forbidden.

If they have their way; no one will be able to eat seafood; including fish

I think it's wrong to eat anything over 100 years old - it's earned the right to not be eaten.

Sure and I agree with the basic premise of PETA but the way they go about things makes me dislike them.

I think you're wrong there....most fruits and vegetables grow as part of plants. If you don't eat them they'll fall off the plant and die. When you eat an apple you're just picking it off the tree, you don't eat the tree itself.

Wikipedia says they got in tons of trouble with PETA because they were selling exotic birds in their stores that they were removing from the tropics. These birds are tough to care for so they shouldn't be pets. Petco no longer sells these birds thanks to an agreement with PETA.

I'm not sure what else (if anything) PETCO does wrong. That brick has been there since before the agreement was reached.

Cheap bastards could do a better job

We get our pet food at Food 4 Less - it's cheaper than Petco. Wal-Mart also has reasonably priced pet food.

They built a store in Trashy Park on the corner of Dix-Toledo and Southfield several years back


But the parking lot was small; They added a drive thru pharmacy and gas station making it even smaller; plus people cut across the lot; to avoid the intersection; though they have speed bumps in front of the store entrance

walmart items are made by foreigners and only foreigners..

target and kmart(hardly any of them anymore) are the ones that sell mostly US made goods

Thanks to big ass stores like Meijer and Walmart

Not to mention most of the Drive In Movies torn down to make way for their mammoth stores

ya well aroundhere in akron we have like tons of chains and so forth

I dont really like drive in movies, though. I get way too many mesquito bites cuz I am barely ever allowed to sit in the car and watch a movie.
