According to the latest state-by-state polls, Barack Obama leads 207-174 in the electoral college with 157 votes to be decided (270 wins). These states (and the District of Columbia) are leaning heavily one way or the other so it's highly unlikely any of them will change.

Assuming these states don't change, there are 281 ways for Obama to win and 228 ways for McCain to win.

Looking at current polls in each state (which are often very close and the "winner" leads by less than the margin of error) Obama wins the election 272-266.

If I had a vote in every election since I was old enough to care (1996 on) I'd have never voted for the winner This year I actually get to vote...hopefully I pick right

Speaking of the electoral college, current census data suggest California will gain an electoral vote in time for 2012 (based on the 2010 census). Since they don't create more electoral votes, someone else will lose one. California already controls 10% of the electoral college which is more than any other state.

Yahoo says that the latest polls have Obama leading 250-237.

According to another system they have Obama winning 293-245 with no states undecided. This system is a buy shares system which allows voters to buy shares in a candidate. I don't really get what that means so I'd ignore that poll.

In terms of percentages, latest polls have Obama leading 47.7% (up 0.2%) to 43.8% (down 0.2%).

Yahoo also says that when searching for information on their search engine, there are 73.8 "Barack Obama" searches for every 26.2 "John McCain" searches.

But with such large populations the votes are never close. A good enough poll will give you a reasonably small margin of error and polls are generally close enough.

The polls work perfectly well for the states those polls are already giving to the winner. I mean Massachusetts will not vote for McCain and Texas won't vote Obama. You can bet your life on that.

There is always a bump up in the polls after the convention, for each party. Just the way it is.

And polls can be made to say whatever the pollsters want them to say. The functioning of poll taking is taught in business and Political Sci degrees.

Normally the marketing companies have an idea of the makeup of the demographics of the various areas of the poll area (city, state or national). They then poll the people in the areas where the demographics correspond with the outcome they desire. Even the wording of the poll is carefully done to sway the person taking the poll. I am sure just about all of us have experienced polls and notice the wording. You may agree with the question as worded, yet be against the thing being polled!

McCain has bucked Bush more than voted with him! But that is not the story you get from the Obama camp, or the newspapers! That is why many Mainline Republicans don't like McCain. He is more Like the Dems old maverick, Joe Lieberman!

The both don't always follow the party line in voting. That is why Joe is now an Independent!

I just read that Palin's teenage daughter is pregnant. I don't think this bodes well for her run.

That came out the same day of her nomination! eek!

And what is the problem??? That sort of stuff (the children of the politicians) is normally off limits in politics! Even Obama went ballistic about this smear tactic! And, the daughter IS GOING TO MARRY THE GUY!

What is the difference between this and Obama himself being born to an unwed underage mother!

I understand that it's bad taste to bring the children into politics, but I believe that's the first thing people should look at. If a person can't be a good parent than how can we expect them to be able to run or help run an entire country. When A teenager gets pregnant it's the result of something gone wrong in the way she was parented. (not sure if that is a word, sorry.) I'm sorry if that upsets anyone, but it's just my opinion. Sure she plans on marring the guy but all teen mothers planned on it, but it rarely ever happens. I don't think someone who can't teach her children how to be responsible about sex or any other part of life should be elected to any part of government. How is she going to be able to run a country when she can't even teach her children right and wrong.
Also it's not Obama's fault that his mother wasn't married. You should look to her mother to place blame, not the child who had no responsibility for it.

I agree. Also I believe my role as a mother always comes first. Having a child with a Down's and a teenager who is pregnant would keep me fairly occupied. Even with a spouse I don't think I could have the presence of mind required to take care of those issues as well as being the vice president of the U.S.

In theory they take simple random samples of the population. You can't poll everyone so they generalize to the entire population. This leads to a margin of error which should be reported. The larger the sample the smaller the error.

Thanks. Rarely do I post about my political opinions, but that one just pushed me. If you looked at our presidents and then the way their children behaved you see a relationship on how their presidencies where. Clinton, you never really heard anything bad about his child and he was a great a president. I think more presidents should get it on in the oval office, let out some of that stress. More people had health care, even if it was government funded like medical or Medicare. Or national budget was strong and if I remember correctly we had almost all or debt paid off. Bush, his kids were always drinking underage and getting in trouble. He is a crappy president, we are on the verge of another great depression. We owe more money then I can even imagine, or social security is all but gone. It makes me feel so fuzzy inside knowing that I'm paying over $1200 a year into social security and won't see a damn penny of it when I retire. But of course if we have another war loving republican in the white house I won't have to worry about retirement, we'll all die in the next world war.

Polls are like TV ratings - when they say they had X number of viewers it's based on a poll-like thing. Have you ever been a Nielsen family? Didn't think so.

I still can't believe Bush was reelected in 2004. People here might like him, but we're quickly becoming the most hated country in the world. I'd have to check this year's polls, but I'd be willing to bet the other nations want Obama.
