Yeah, we need both!
I wonder how long before some company starts making 0-16 memorabilia? So far the Highland Mint has no commemorative plaques for sale.
As well they shouldn't
That be like making plaques that commemorate the Titanic sinking or the Hindenberg crashing
Some things are better left unsaid or not done

Though I believe the Lions are under a lease for another 20 years at Ford Field

Saturday, January 3, 2009 Millen: I would have fired myself John Niyo / The Detroit News
Former Lions president Matt Millen made his first public comments Saturday since being fired Sept. 24, three games into what would become a record-setting 0-16 season in Detroit.
Millen, in a brief introduction as a new member of the NBC studio team, sat down for an interview with co-host Dan Patrick, answering questions about his tenure with the Lions. Contrite at times, defiant at others, Millen was asked about his reputation after presiding over a league-worst 31-84 record in seven-plus seasons.
"Oh, if you're just gonna say, 'Oh, that's the stiff who used to be up in Detroit and they lost all those games, it's gotta be on him,' I would say, 'Yeah, I was in Detroit and you do have to blame me.' " Millen said. "But there's a lot more to it than that. Listen, I could give you excuses. I'm not gonna do that. I can give you explanations. To me, that's just an excuse after the fact. So you take the hit and you move on. How they look at me? I know what I am. You can say whatever you want about me."
But for the first time, Millen acknowledged he wasn't fully prepared to take on the task of running an NFL franchise when the Lions hired the Fox broadcast analyst in 2001. Was he qualified for the job?
"In some areas, yes. In some areas, no," Millen said. "Certainly from a football point of view, and the Xs and Os, and that's something that you study for a long time and you understand. But there's a whole other side to that job that you have to learn. And, frankly, I didn't understand it going in and I had to learn it."
He admitted the changes he made -- from coaches to offensive philosophy to draft strategy -- were detrimental, in hindsight.
"Well, you change coaches because obviously you're not having success," Millen said. "But that's a great point that you make. Because any organization that's gonna have a winning record, it all comes back to not only stability, but consistency. You have to have consistency in philosophy, you have to have consistency with scheme and that type of thing, and so when you're changing things over, that's tough to do."
Asked if he would've fired himself, Millen, whose dismissal was made three days after a lopsided loss at San Francisco dropped the Lions to 0-3, didn't flinch.
"Yeah, I would have, actually," he said. "I wouldn't have -- probably not this year, until after the season. Because I think when you start having change over in an organization, it filters down to the locker room, and that's tough to do. And I thought that was a tough position for Rod Marinelli to be in, who I think is -- Rod's a stud. I mean, Rod's an outstanding football coach, and obviously the thing went the other way on him this year. But that's a tough position for him."
Marinelli, who was 10-38 in three seasons as the Lions coach, was fired Monday at the completion of the first 0-16 season in NFL history. But Millen said he shoulders the blame for that record.
"Completely responsible," he said. "I mean, you were head of football operations, you throw it back on me. You can say something about the coaching, you can say something about the players. But inevitably, I'm responsible for them. And so I'm completely responsible for it in my mind."
And he admitted it was tough to watch the last few months.
"Oh, it was brutal," Millen said. "Obviously, knowing everybody up there and being so intimate and knowing (and) understanding the detail and watching it unfold, it was probably harder watching it from home than it was when you're up there. Because at least when you're up there, you have some interaction. At home, you're just sitting there."
But when asked how close the Lions were to turning it around, Millen answered, "A lot closer than people think."
"I mean, right now it's easy to just sit around and say, 'Aw, the Lions, they stink,' and kick 'em when they're down," Millen said.
"But if you take a look around this league right now, in fact, we're gonna watch one today -- Atlanta had four wins a year ago, one (win) in Miami. I mean, it's doable. Is there enough talent up there in Detroit? Absolutely. You have one of the top receivers right now in the league in Calvin Johnson. You've got a good running back (Kevin Smith) . There's some pieces in place in the offensive line. Defensively, they have some people. Do they need some help? Yeah, they need some help. But it certainly can be done."

Saturday, January 24, 2009 Lions hire ex-Rams coach Linehan Offensive coordinator is an ex-Vikings coach, but that doesn't mean Culpepper will stay. John Niyo / The Detroit News
ALLEN PARK -- Scott Linehan's most successful years as an offensive coordinator also happened to be Daunte Culpepper's best days as an NFL quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings.
So the announcement Friday that Linehan, who also served as the St. Louis Rams coach the last two-plus seasons, will be the Lions' new offensive play-caller leads to an obvious conclusion.
Culpepper will be the Lions' starting quarterback for 2009, right? Not so fast, cautioned Jim Schwartz, the Lions' head coach.
"I wouldn't read too much into that," he said Friday afternoon, a day after interviewing Linehan at the team's practice facility in Allen Park. "Scott's worked with a lot of different quarterbacks in his career. We're still in the evaluation phase (with players) -- actually, we haven't even started that yet."
The Lions signed Culpepper to a two-year contract Nov. 4, bringing the three-time Pro Bowler out of semi-retirement and immediately installing him as the team's starter. He was largely ineffective in five starts before missing the final three games with a shoulder injury. It was a far cry from his final three seasons teaming with receiver Randy Moss in Minnesota under Linehan, highlighted by an MVP-caliber 2004 season in which he threw for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Linehan, 45, moved on to Miami the following year as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator before landing the Rams' top job in 2006. He was fired after an 0-4 start this season and an 11-25 overall record there. Culpepper's career was derailed in 2005 by a serious knee injury, and he had brief stretches with Miami and the Oakland Raiders before finally landing in Detroit.
Neither Linehan nor Culpepper responded to messages left for them Friday. Linehan, who will be formally introduced to the Detroit media early next week, also interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and turned down the San Francisco 49ers coordinator job last week, citing family reasons with a wife and three sons, ages 7 to 13, back home in St. Louis.
But Schwartz weighed in on the subject Friday, after a busy first week on the job in Detroit.
"Part of the dynamic of a new coaching staff is that you now have those loyalties," said Schwartz, who hired his defensive coordinator, the Chiefs' Gunther Cunningham, on Wednesday. "I think one of the reasons you have turnarounds is you have players that are proving themselves to new coaches (and) you have coaches that are proving themselves to new players. And I don't want that connection. We were very clear that connection isn't going to necessarily mean we're either keeping or not keeping Daunte."
The Lions won't wait until training camp to make a decision, though. Culpepper is due to receive a $2.5 million roster bonus in late February, in addition to the $2.5 million salary he'll receive next season. The Lions have three other quarterbacks under contract for next season: Jon Kitna, Drew Stanton and Drew Henson. Kitna, who spent most of the season on injured reserve, likely will be traded or released this winter.
Whoever stays will be working closely with Linehan.
"I think that the quarterbacks need one voice, they need the offensive coordinator's voice," Schwartz said. "We still may have a quarterback coach, but he'll be responsible for fundamentals and drill work. The only voice to the quarterback is going to be the offensive coordinator."
And with Linehan, just as it is with Cunningham, Schwartz liked what he heard.
"Scott, if you look at his background, he's always run the ball very well, and he's used the weapons very well -- he's good at attacking defenses," said Schwartz, who singled out the success Linehan had in Miami under one of his former colleagues, Nick Saban.
In 2005, the Dolphins improved from 29th in total offense the season before to 14th. The Vikings' offense ranked in the NFL's top five all three seasons he was there.
"He came from Minnesota where they'd had some pretty good success and went to Miami on a team that, probably a lot like us here, was going through a transformation," Schwartz said. "(He) had a lot of success with a defensive-minded head coach and executing that vision that Nick had and he turned it into a head coaching opportunity. So, obviously, the results speak for themselves there."

Thursday, January 22, 2009 Lions Cunningham choice a no-brainer Defensive coordinator is of a like mind with Schwartz, who worked with him at Tennessee. John Niyo / The Detroit News
MOBILE, Ala. -- Jim Schwartz always knew one of his first calls when he got a head-coaching job would be to Gunther Cunningham. And Cunningham, one of the NFL's more colorful -- and accomplished -- coaching characters, had a pretty good idea what he'd say if he got that call.
It only took a short while to realize that back in 2001, when Cunningham, fresh off his dismissal as the Kansas City coach, joined Jeff Fisher's staff in Tennessee and went to work coaching the Titans' linebackers for Schwartz, then a rookie defensive coordinator who was two decades his junior.
"I'd never been a coordinator before, and here was a guy that had a damn-near Hall of Fame resume as a defensive coordinator coming from Kansas City," said Schwartz, 42, who was introduced Friday as the Lions' new head coach. "We instantly bonded -- literally, in about the first hour of conversation."
That bond only strengthened through all the conversations that followed in three years together in Tennessee, and then in the years since after Cunningham, now 62 and a 27-year veteran of the NFL coaching ranks, returned to the Chiefs.
"When I left there, he called me on the phone in the car and we had this goodbye session and he said, 'Gun, I love you,' " Cunningham said, his voice cracking a bit with emotion in a half-hour phone interview Wednesday. "When he said that, he basically broke a guy that'd been in the league a long time. ... And when he got this opportunity (with the Lions), I said, 'Jimmy, if you have the opportunity to hire me, I would love to work for you.' And he, in turn, sent me a text message and said, 'It would be an honor to have you work for me.' "
On Wednesday, they made it official, as Cunningham signed on as the first member of Schwartz's coaching staff in Detroit. After a few days of negotiations to extract himself from a dead-end job in Kansas City, where head coach Herm Edwards is on the firing line, Cunningham is the Lions' new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
"Jim asked me if I have to go up there to sign a contract and I said, 'Tell 'em to fax it. I don't have to go anywhere,' " Cunningham said. "I know who I'm working for -- that's all that matters."
Clearly, Schwartz feels the same way about Cunningham, whose 40 years of coaching experience span a football landscape from the collegiate ranks to the Canadian Football League to a half-dozen stops in the NFL. His young defense struggled last season in Kansas City, but in 2007 the Chiefs led the NFL in third-down defense -- one of Schwartz's most-valued statistics -- and ranked among the NFL's top five in eight other defensive categories.
"Honestly, it's an honor for me to have him on my staff," Schwartz said Wednesday in Mobile, where he was wrapping up three days of coaching interviews and scouting at the Senior Bowl. "And it would really be an honor for me to work for him. So there's a lot of mutual respect."
Cunningham, who also spent two years as the Chiefs' head coach in 1999-2000, got his coaching start in 1968 at the University of Oregon, his alma mater, and he has coached everything from kickers to defensive linemen working for mentors such as George Seifert and Bud Carson and, more recently, former Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer. And it's that last name that brings him back to his new boss.
"Working for Marty was probably the greatest thing I've ever done in the NFL -- he and I got along tremendously," Cunningham said. "Jim Schwartz is like a reincarnation for me. ... The relationship we developed at Tennessee is one of those things that comes to you about once in a lifetime in coaching."
He went on and on Wednesday, raving about Schwartz's "intelligence" and "inner strength" and "the conviction he has about football and the way he approaches it."
Added Cunningham: "I always felt like when I was coaching for Marty, if I worked on something and struggled with it, I would go to his office and say, 'Marty, look, this is the process I'm in, I want to play this defense, but I'm not real comfortable with it.' And Marty would say, 'Gun, if I know you, you've worked for days and hours on this. Call it, it's gonna work.' I always felt like when Jim and I were working together that he felt the same way about me."
He was right, as it turns out.
"We've worked well together, we're of the same mind on a lot of things," Schwartz said. "And his intensity, probably the best way I can describe it is, every minute of every day is fourth down-and-1 with Gunther. We're gonna need that kind of attitude."
Cunningham, born in Munich shortly after the end of World War II, moved to the U.S. at age 10 with his German mother and his adoptive father, who was a U.S. Air Force sergeant. Schwartz on Wednesday called him "a great American success story."
But he has been called far less flattering things while developing a reputation over his career as a fiery, no-holds-barred coach. And while he joked Wednesday he has "two personalities," pointing to his 39-year marriage to wife, Rene, as evidence, he doesn't deny he's a taskmaster.
"Whether a player likes me personally or not never mattered to me," he said. "All I want is their respect."
And that, Schwartz said, he has earned over the years.
"You know, sometimes you have to ruffle feathers to get things done," Schwartz said. "But in the long run, he has players' respect. ... Generally, the people that work with him love him. The people that work against him, hate him. I think the reason is, he views the people that work against him as the enemy. He's not trying to make any friends."
In Detroit, it appears, he's got the only one he needs right now.

Thursday, January 22, 2009 Report: Lions tab Slowik for secondary John Niyo / The Detroit News
Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday the rest of his defensive staff would begin to fill out a bit more quickly now that he has his coordinator in place. Schwartz announced Wednesday the hiring of Gunther Cunningham from the Kansas City Chiefs to be his defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
According to a report in the Rocky Mountain News, former Broncos defensive coordinator Bob Slowik is expected to join the Lions' staff as a defensive backs coach. Lions officials haven't confirmed any other coaching moves since Cunningham's hiring.
Slowik, 54, was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2007 in Denver after coaching the Broncos' defensive backs for two seasons. But most of the Broncos' staff was let go after head coach Mike Shanahan was fired two weeks ago.
A 17-year NFL coaching veteran, Slowik had stints as a defensive coordinator in Green Bay (2004), Cleveland (1999) and Chicago (1993-98).

NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA'S BLOG Lions keep traditional Thanksgiving game in 2009
By NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • January 30, 2009
TAMPA — The Lions’ traditional Thanksgiving Day game is safe for at least another year.
“It will not change for this season,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said today at a news conference.
The Lions have played 69 Thanksgiving Day games dating to 1934, when they started the tradition after the franchise moved to Detroit from Portsmouth, Ohio.
But in 1999, the Lions fought off a resolution to rotate the game among the league’s teams.
And as the Lions have struggled in recent years, there have been calls, at least in the media, for the league to take the game away from them. Those calls grew louder this year. The Lions have lost their last five Thanksgiving games, all by large margins.
In a town hall meeting with season-ticket holders this week, new coach Jim Schwartz said he wanted to put “barbed wire” around the game and not give anyone reason to talk about taking it from Detroit.
“I understand it’s a great tradition in both Detroit and Dallas, and it’s something that our owners have raised from time to time,” Goodell said. “If ownership feels that they want to discuss it again later in the year, we certainly will raise it.”
Goodell also said the league would not relax its blackout policy, even in light of situations like Detroit’s, with a bad team and bad economy. Five Lions games were blacked out on local television in 2008 after Ford Field failed to sell out by the deadline.
“The blackout policy is something that is a long-term policy of the NFL,” Goodell said. “It has served us well, it has served the public well and I do not anticipate any changes to our blackout policy.”

The NFL needs to change the blackout policy or lower prices so more fans can buy tickets
