Bonderman, Robertson safe (but not Galarraga) when Dontrelle returns

Tigers right-hander Jeremy Bonderman has one quality start, and left-hander Nate Robertson has none.

Rookie right-hander Armando Galarraga has three.

And the Tigers are a distant last in the American League in quality starts.

But neither Bonderman nor Robertson might lose his spot in the rotation to Galarraga when left-hander Dontrelle Willis returns from the disabled list.

All this became clear after Friday night's 6-5 victory over the Yankees, when manager Jim Leyland gave the details on Willis' immediate future.

Willis is scheduled to make rehab starts with Triple-A Toledo on Monday and next Saturday. If everything goes well, Leyland said, the club expects Willis to return and replace Galarraga in the rotation.

Galarraga is 2-1 in five starts since he came up from Triple-A to replace Willis, who went on the DL with a hyperextended right knee.

Leyland said when Willis returns, Galarraga might stay with the Tigers as a reliever instead of returning to the minors.

"Galarraga has been very good," Leyland said. "I really like him because he's a strike thrower. But now you're asking a guy who hasn't pitched in the bullpen to go to the bullpen."

With Monday's open date, the Tigers will have Galarraga skip his next turn. Instead of starting Tuesday in Kansas City, he will start next Saturday in Arizona. Justin Verlander will start Tuesday against the Royals with four days' rest, his normal allotment.

Leyland said that without this switch, open dates on the schedule would have caused Verlander to have an extra day off before each of his next two starts.

"We need to get Verlander going," Leyland said.

Verlander has one win and one quality start in eight starts this season.

This makes no sense! I would think Galarraga would rather be in the bullpen than in the minors? IMO I think he should remain a starter.

Money is the stupid reason. They have big bucks contracts for Nate and Bondo. This situation makes me mad.

And it is hindering the Tigers performance so far this season

It needs to be by production, and not paid out ahead of time. Make 'em hungry again!

I dont care how much you are paying Nate, If he isnt producing, send him down and keep Armando up here. Or if you dont want to send Nate down, put him in the pen and let Armando start.

Gallaraga needs to stay in the rotation....even I can see that and I'm half BLIND!!

Too bad our coaches are fully blind! We sure bought a blind pig in the poke with Willis. He has major problems and they NEVER should have offered him a long term contract without first seeing him pitch for awhile!

They should have done what was rumored...get him in the trade then immediately trade him away! Now we see why Flordia made him part of the Cabrera package!

We should have traded for Haren instead of Cabrera/Willis. Sure, Willis is great but we needed pitching and last time I checked Haren still doesn't suck.

The ONLY guy that has EARNED a spot in the rotation thus far is Galarraga!! (Well...maybe Kenny too)

Brilliant move to dump the ONLY successful starting pitcher we have had....

It would be like getting rid of Fidrych in 1976! He came in because another pitcher was injured.
