Leyland defends his decision to pull Bonderman Tuesday night

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland gave several reasons why he lifted right-hander Jeremy Bonderman when he did Tuesday night: Tigers ahead, 2-0, with runners on second and third and one out in the eighth.

The Angels batter was switch-hitter Gary Matthews Jr. Right-hander Francisco Cruceta, the reliever in charge of guarding eighth-inning leads, came in to face Matthews.

Bonderman had thrown 83 pitches.

"I thought he still had some left in the tank," Leyland said. "But the runners are at second and third, and he (Cruceta) has a wipeout pitch (a split-fingered fastball)."

He also said that he thought Bonderman was a bit tired and that Matthews had done decently against him (six hits in 19 career at-bats).

"To me, that was a no-brainer," Leyland said. "You're looking for a strikeout, and Cruceta got it."

After he fanned Matthews, Cruceta threw a run-scoring wild pitch during a walk to Vladimir Guerrero. Garret Anderson followed with a tying single.

An inning later, Matthews got the two-out RBI single off Aquilino Lopez that gave the Angels a 3-2 win. It was the first time this season the Tigers lost when leading in the eighth inning or later.

AILING SHEFF: Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield began the season coming back from off-season shoulder surgery.

On Tuesday night, after he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique, he recounted how difficult it has been for him to stay healthy this season.

"I feel good, and then I slide into second and break (the tip of) my finger," he said, referring to the mishap in the season's third game. "Then you're still dealing with your shoulder. Then I get to the point where I can take extra batting practice and work on my swing and start swinging better. Then this.

"I just have to weather the storm. It makes you stronger."

QUIET BATS: Entering Wednesday night's series finale, the Tigers' yield for the first two games of the Angels series was two runs on eight hits.

"This club is supposed to hit," Leyland said. "We haven't hit. ... For whatever reason, we're just not hitting.

"I can't explain it. If I knew the answer, I'd do something about it. But I just can't explain it.

"We've played too many innings where we just don't even threaten. We go inning after inning where we don't even threaten."

As in so many losses this season, the Tigers on Monday and Tuesday nights in Anaheim couldn't grind out a run to win a low-scoring game.

Right-hander Ervin Santana threw a complete-game three-hitter against the Tigers on Tuesday night. He allowed one hit after Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer in the second.

"Three hits doesn't get it done," Leyland said. "That guy (Santana) is good. I'm not going to take anything away from him. But you've got to find a way to grind it and beat those guys."

In each of their last four wins, the Angels had scored three runs or fewer.

With Tuesday's loss, the Tigers fell to 1-28 when they scored four runs or fewer.

Bondo did not want to give up the ball! He knew what would happen if Cruceta went in there...and he was right!

Still no CG this season!
