Early returns on Tigers, Diamondbacks aren't promising

(04-05) 19:23 PDT -- We made our World Series prediction before Opening Day, and it was Tigers vs. Diamondbacks.

The early signs aren't promising.

An offense that was supposed to out-Yankee the Yankees went 2-for-22 with runners in scoring position, helping explain why the Tigers were swept by the not-so-loaded Royals in the season-opening series.

Then came word that Gary Sheffield injured his left index finger on a headfirst slide at second base. Sheffield was hitless in the series until a wind-blown single in his final at-bat in the final game, but he unwisely tried to stretch it to a double and got hurt.

Furthermore, third baseman Miguel Cabrera, fresh off signing his seven-year, $141 million contract extension, missed a game with a sore quadriceps. He returned as the DH, replacing Sheffield. Already, Curtis Granderson is shelved with a broken hand, and the last thing the Tigers need is to lose more hitters, especially because the offense was supposed to compensate for an iffy bullpen.

As for the Diamondbacks, who dropped two of three in Cincinnati, they're looking for Brandon Lyon to shine as the closer after Jose Valverde (47 saves) was traded to Houston. But Lyon blew a 5-3 lead in the ninth on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks hope the best for Doug Davis, who lasted 32/3 innings in his first start, one week before he's to undergo surgery for thyroid cancer. And don't count on Randy Johnson, who gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings of a Triple-A game.

By the way, we also picked the Mets to win the NL East, then Pedro Martinez pulled his hamstring and is shelved four to six weeks. The choice in the AL West was Seattle. Naturally, the pick was followed with news that All-Star closer J.J. Putz sustained a rib injury and went on the DL.

We also picked the Cubs and Red Sox to win their divisions and Dodgers and Angels as wild cards. So woe is them.

I'm sick of other teams making fun of us. You should hear the Florida announcers. Every damn game they make a point to discuss the Tigers at least twice

They can't schedule any July Sunday Night Games at Comerica either!

the sad part is . right now. signing bonds may give us a run? he is good for a hr every 4 games, that meens we could score .....right
i dont want bonds on my team. but something has to be done
