Bobby Fishcer Dies

The only American ever to win the world championships of chess has died. He was 64. Cause of death is believed to be kidney failure due to an unknown illness. He defeated Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Championships.

and beat him in a rematch, too! That was pretty big. We didn't have another real victory against the Soviets that I can remember until the 1980 Olympics.

Too bad he ended up hating the US by the time he died. You can't help but blame him though. He got in huge trouble for having a match (I think the rematch) in the USSR since we weren't allowed to go there.

yeah. I'm not sure why he settled in Iceland, either, but God rest his soul anyway. He had a brilliant mind.

Curling rocks! The US men's team won a medal in 2006. That was pretty cool because they're generally terrible. Curling is one of my favorite winter olympic sports - behind hockey and possibly biathlon (I think that's what it's called....the one where you cross country ski and shoot targets - it might be nordic combined). Speed skating, luge, bobsledding, and skeleton are all pretty cool, too. The winter olympics has lots of great events - as does the summer olympics.

Can't wait until Beijing this summer! Go USA! The Chinese think they're going to compete with us for the total medal count. Don't let it happen! Michael Phelps (a UM student!) needs to win lots of medals....like 8 gold ones!
