| Mailbag: Where to play Cabrera?Beat reporter Jason Beck answers Tigers fans' questions By Jason Beck / MLB.com With Miguel Cabrera signed, why not play him in left field and keep Brandon Inge at third? He is one great defensive player the team will greatly miss. -- Daniel B., Grandville, Mich.- Spoiler:
With all apologies to those writing in who suggested Inge should be a backup catcher, shortstop, first baseman or relief pitcher, this is the one switch that could be feasible. It would still have some issues, from the Tigers' contract concerns on a payroll now slated to top $120 million, to the supposed preference of Cabrera to play third base, to taking a left-handed bat out of the lineup with Jacque Jones. It's not impossible, but it's not what they're looking to do.
Given that Inge is unquestionably good defensively, what did Tigers ownership and management expect his batting average to be in 2007 so that the Cabrera trade wouldn't have happened? Moreover, why give Inge a multi-year contract extension if a trade of this magnitude was even remotely considered? -- Mark C., Tipton, Mich.- Spoiler:
To answer your first question, I don't think that was the main consideration. To answer your second question, Inge signed his extension a year ago. There was no way for the Tigers to consider a deal like this as realistic or feasible back then. Hi Jason. Am I wrong, or is it a no-brainer for Inge to play part-time on a winner as opposed to full-time on a loser? I know it's a matter of personal preference for that player, but c'mon. I know we're speculating, but how can he be happy playing for Pittsburgh or some other also-ran? -- Daniel L., Genoa, Ohio- Spoiler:
You're being presumptuous here. First, it's not simply a matter of Inge wanting to play somewhere else. The Tigers were gauging interest from teams on him even before president/general manager Dave Dombrowski talked to him. Second, until you see what interest is out there, you can't assume where he'll end up, especially since there are a couple potential contending teams looking for help at third. And to be fair, Inge is in the prime age of a player's career, and he has earned his status as one of the game's best third basemen in terms of range. You can't tell a guy he should be grateful to sit on the bench and watch other players win games. When a player under contract like Inge gets booted from his position because of an incoming transaction, does he release to the media that he wants to play elsewhere to kind of shaft the team? It seems like sour grapes to me for a player to say in the press that they want to be traded, when he knows darn well that means everyone in the league knows he wants out. So there is no way they will get a) value for him and b) anyone that will be willing to pickup the remaining 19 mill. It doesn't seem like business strategy to me as much as it does an eye for an eye. Does he gain anything by demanding a trade? -- Chad P., Grayling, Mich.- Spoiler:
Again, Inge didn't demand a trade. In fact, he hasn't said anything to the media at all since the deal. After the Tigers were already checking to see who would be interested in him, Dombrowski called Inge to let him know about his situation and get an idea how he felt about everything. When asked, Inge said he would rather play somewhere with a chance to be an everyday third baseman. Dombrowski, when asked about Inge during a radio interview, said later that day that he talked to Inge and recounted how Inge felt. Teams knew by then that Inge was on the market. Jason, is it your sense that the Tigers might take less than "market value" for Inge just to reduce the roster or will they demand fair value for him. If, by chance he stays, then who's next on the block? -- Danny S., Knoxville, Tenn.- Spoiler:
How much the Tigers could get in return for Inge will likely depend on how much of his contract they pick up. So far, that appears to be the main stumbling block. Hi Jason, My fiancee is a huge Inge fan like myself and it will be sad to lose his glove at third base. My question is: What should I do about the Inge T-shirt I got her for Christmas? She is going to be devastated if they trade him! Why can't we make Cabrera lose 20 pounds and put him in left field? -- Josh L, Toledo- Spoiler:
If and when he's traded, she can consider the T-shirt a souvenir, like those Bobby Higginson jerseys you still see every now and then. Hey, a question that doesn't involve Inge!!: To me, the biggest question facing the Tigers this year is depth. After letting Andrew Miller, Jair Jurrjens, and now Chad Durbin go, how will they account for a possible injured starter? We can't reasonably expect all five starters to stay off the DL all year, so what contingency plan do the Tigers have? -- Ryan G., Rochester, Mich.- Spoiler:
The sixth and seventh starting slots, as manager Jim Leyland likes to call them, fall upon a few different arms. Virgil Vasquez and Jordan Tata are the returning guys in Triple-A for now, plus any Minor League free agents the Tigers might add. If need be, Zach Miner and Jason Grilli have a chance to slot into a swingman role like Durbin had last year. In assessing the now-depleted state of the Tigers' farm system, you made no mention of Rick Porcello. Where do things stand with him? -- Mike V., Carmel, N.Y.- Spoiler:
Porcello is unquestionably the Tigers' top prospect. However, he's a young man out of high school who has yet to pitch in a professional game. Even Josh Beckett needed the better part of two years to reach the Majors, so it's hard to say he's on the horizon. Does Freddy Guzman have any chance with his speed and defense to stay in Detroit as a pinch runner or a replacement outfielder? -- Dany B., Oklahoma City, Okla.- Spoiler:
He has a chance. Assistant GM Al Avila said about as much at the end of the Winter Meetings. At the very least, he's insurance in the system as a center fielder if Curtis Granderson gets injured at any point. The Tigers haven't had that for a while, which is why Omar Infante and Ryan Raburn ended up giving center field a shot last year and Brent Clevlen earned a late-season call up. Does Minor League catcher James Skelton have any future in the Majors? He hits left-handed, but he is the smallest catcher I have ever heard of: 5-feet 11-inches and 170 pounds. -- Rich E., Mesa, Ariz.- Spoiler:
Skelton is the closest the Tigers have to a catcher of the future in their farm system, but that's a relative statement. I'm not sure the Tigers or anyone know what they have in him yet, partly because of his size, but also because of his level. His 2007 stats were impressive, but they also came at low Class A West Michigan.

| Inge's BEST choice would be to stay in Detroit and Super-sub. He would play more in Detroit under THOSE circumstances than he would anywhere else as a starter.....until he is exposed and benched anyways. | |

| Yeah..and he'd be on a winning team! It's not like if we trade him to the Pirates he's ever going to win a championship. | |
