Max Scherzer was unable to go due to a deltoid strain, so the 23-year-old Smyly gets another call in the thick of a pennant race. He last started Sunday vs. Minnesota, allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.



Twins: LHP Scott Diamond (12-8, 3.64 ERA)

Diamond bounced back after a couple of shaky outings to turn in a strong start against the Tigers in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The lefty gave up two runs on just four hits over seven innings to pick up the win.
