| Melvin Mercedes pitched 2 innings in relief and benefited from a 5 run Tiger 8th inning to earn the win. (Kevin Pataky) Tigers Use Five-Run Eighth For Comeback WinConnecticut evens three-game series with ValleyCatsBy Justin Sheinis / Connecticut Tigers 06/21/2011 10:08 PM ET Recap Box NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers used a five-run eighth inning rally to storm from behind and defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 5-2 on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers bats got hot. After an Adolfo Reina leadoff walk, Jonathan Ogden picked up the Tigers second hit of the game to put runners on first and second base. Chad Wright then grounded a tailor-made double play ball to the second baseman John Hinson. However, Hinson threw the ball over the head of the shortstop Neiko Johnson covering second, allowing Reina to score. P.J. Polk followed with an RBI base hit to score Wright and tie the game at two. Jason King then came through with what would be the game-winner, an RBI infield single to put the Tigers up by one. They would go on to add two more insurance runs in the inning to preserve the victory. Tri-City got the scoring started in the third inning. Hinson drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a stolen base. The next batter, Justin Gominsky, drove Hinson in with a base hit, giving the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead. Tri-City would tack on another run in the eighth to go on top by two, before the Tigers comeback. Despite three errors from the Tigers defense and the pitching staff issuing ten walks and hitting two batters, Connecticut was able to keep the game within reach. Melvin Mercedes picked up the win in relief for the Tigers, while Travis Smink suffered the loss for the ValleyCats. The Tigers and ValleyCats will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. In his previous at-bat King was robbed of a home run by right fielder Drew Muren, who jumped at the wall and kept the ball in the park.
With two outs in the ninth, Zach Maggard connected for his second homer of the year, a two-run shot, to give the Tigers the insurance they would need for the victory.
The ValleyCats would score a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Zach Johnson RBI double, but Daniel Bennett shut the door and picked up his first save of the year.
Tigers' starter Matt Crouse tossed six shutout frames followed by two scoreless innings from Kevan Hess, while Tri-City starter Kyle Hallock threw six shutout innings for the ValleyCats.

Recap Box
TROY, NY - The Connecticut Tigers used their second highest run total of the year and first shutout of 2011 to cruise to a 6-0 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
Tigers' starter Tyler Barrett, who was able to go just two innings in his season debut, threw five scoreless innings tonight, surrendering only two hits, with no walks issued and three strikeouts to earn the victory.
Nick Avila, Drew Gagnier, Pedro Perez and Clemente Mendoza combined to finish the job with one scoreless inning each.
