After allowing just six runs in the first three games of the season combined, the Tigers pitching staff surrendered 11 runs on 14 hits in game four alone.

The ValleyCats regained the lead with two runs in the third and would add on eight more runs before the game was put to rest.

Matt Duffy led the way for Tri-City, going 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI's.

Matt Crouse was saddled with the loss for the Tigers, while Kyle Hallock earned the victory for the ValleyCats.

Tigers Use Five-Run Eighth For Comeback Win
Connecticut evens three-game series with ValleyCats
By Justin Sheinis / Connecticut Tigers
06/21/2011 10:08 PM ET

Recap Box

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers used a five-run eighth inning rally to storm from behind and defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 5-2 on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers bats got hot. After an Adolfo Reina leadoff walk, Jonathan Ogden picked up the Tigers second hit of the game to put runners on first and second base. Chad Wright then grounded a tailor-made double play ball to the second baseman John Hinson. However, Hinson threw the ball over the head of the shortstop Neiko Johnson covering second, allowing Reina to score.

P.J. Polk followed with an RBI base hit to score Wright and tie the game at two. Jason King then came through with what would be the game-winner, an RBI infield single to put the Tigers up by one. They would go on to add two more insurance runs in the inning to preserve the victory.

Tri-City got the scoring started in the third inning. Hinson drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a stolen base. The next batter, Justin Gominsky, drove Hinson in with a base hit, giving the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead. Tri-City would tack on another run in the eighth to go on top by two, before the Tigers comeback.

Despite three errors from the Tigers defense and the pitching staff issuing ten walks and hitting two batters, Connecticut was able to keep the game within reach.

Melvin Mercedes picked up the win in relief for the Tigers, while Travis Smink suffered the loss for the ValleyCats.

The Tigers and ValleyCats will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.

Smith two-run double only scoring for Tigers
06/24/2011 10:02 PM ET

Recap Box

BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers committed six costly errors in a 4-2 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters on Friday night at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont.

Vermont took an early 2-0 lead on a Jordan Tripp two-run homerun in the first inning, but the Tigers came back in the fourth to tie it up at two on a Les Smith two out two-run double.

Two seventh inning errors helped the Lake Monsters take a 3-2 lead and they would tack on an insurance run in the eighth on a Diomedes Lopez solo shot to left that hit off the foul pole.

Ryan Woolley suffered the loss out of the bullpen for the Tigers despite only giving up one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Drew Bailey picked up the win for Vermont, while Tanner Peters got his first save of the year. Bailey and Peters combined to hold the Tigers hitless over the final 4.1 innings.

The Tigers and Lake Monsters will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow night at Centennial Field. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM.

Tigers Lead 2-0 In Suspended Game
Brennan Smith tosses four shutout innings
By Justin Sheinis / Connecticut Tigers
06/25/2011 8:26 PM ET

BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning when the sky's opened up and heavy rains fell on Centennial Field, causing the game between the Tigers and the Vermont Lake Monsters to be suspended.

The game will be finished as part of a doubleheader the next time the Tigers come to Vermont, which is for a two-game set on August 28 and 29.

The game was stopped in the top of the fifth with no outs, Jonathan Ogden on first base and Les Smith at the plate.

Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Zach Maggard RBI groundout to score Dean Green. They would add on another run in the third to take a two-run lead.

Tiger's starter Brennan Smith was pitching lights out with four shutout innings in the books. He surrendered just one hit and issued a walk.

The Tigers will now head to Troy, New York to take on the Tri-City ValleyCats in a three-game series beginning tomorrow. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM.

Two Ninth Innings Homers Leads Tigers To Win
King and Maggard long balls breaks game open
By Justin Sheinis / Connecticut Tigers
06/26/2011 7:33 PM ET

Recap Box

TROY, NY - After a pitcher's duel threw the first eight innings, the Connecticut Tigers bats broke open in the ninth with two home runs to fuel them to a 3-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Sunday evening from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The game remained scoreless into the ninth inning, when Jason King started it off with a bang knocking his first professional homer over the right field fence to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In his previous at-bat King was robbed of a home run by right fielder Drew Muren, who jumped at the wall and kept the ball in the park.

With two outs in the ninth, Zach Maggard connected for his second homer of the year, a two-run shot, to give the Tigers the insurance they would need for the victory.

The ValleyCats would score a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Zach Johnson RBI double, but Daniel Bennett shut the door and picked up his first save of the year.

Tigers' starter Matt Crouse tossed six shutout frames followed by two scoreless innings from Kevan Hess, while Tri-City starter Kyle Hallock threw six shutout innings for the ValleyCats.

Hess picked up his first win on the season, while Mitchell Lambson, who surrendered the King homer suffered the loss.

The Tigers will play game two of the three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats in Troy tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.

Tigers Win 6-0 Behind First Shutout Of Season
Barrett tosses five scoreless innings for first win
By Justin Sheinis / Connecticut Tigers
06/27/2011 10:10 PM ET

Recap Box

TROY, NY - The Connecticut Tigers used their second highest run total of the year and first shutout of 2011 to cruise to a 6-0 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Tigers' starter Tyler Barrett, who was able to go just two innings in his season debut, threw five scoreless innings tonight, surrendering only two hits, with no walks issued and three strikeouts to earn the victory.

Nick Avila, Drew Gagnier, Pedro Perez and Clemente Mendoza combined to finish the job with one scoreless inning each.

The offense got rolling early with two runs in both the second and third inning. Patrick Leyland, the son of Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, made his season debut with Connecticut count in a big way. He slapped an RBI base hit in his first at-bat of the year and added an RBI single in the ninth.

Samir Rijo, Matt Perry and Jeff Holm all had two hits tonight as well to go along with Leyland. The Tigers only game with more runs scored this year was in their first contest of the season, a 7-2 win at Lowell.

After shutting down the Tigers' offense with five shutout innings in his season debut last week, ValleyCats' starter Nick Tropeano suffered the loss this evening after giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits in only three innings of work.

The Tigers will go for the sweep of the three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats in Troy tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
