DETROIT -- Don't ask Tigers manager Jim Leyland who's coming up when rosters expand in September. Between the moves Detroit has already had to make and the injuries at Triple-A Toledo, there aren't a whole lot of promotions left.
"They're all here," Leyland said, only slightly exaggerating. "The cupboard's pretty bare down there."
That's more of a numbers issue than a personnel issue. With Danny Worth still sidelined by his bruised left heel, Brent Dlugach now out with a strained left oblique, Fu-Te Ni on a throwing program from his left arm injury, Ryan Strieby still out with an injured left wrist, and now reliever Luis Marte on the disabled list after taking a liner off his right arm, the Mud Hens are about as injury-riddled as the Tigers.
At this point, the only Mud Hens on the 40-man roster who are active are outfielders Jeff Frazier and Casper Wells, infielder Scott Sizemore, left-hander Andy Oliver and relievers Jay Sborz and Robbie Weinhardt.
Strieby is close enough to a return that he could be a strong candidate for one of the Tigers' spots in the Arizona Fall League. He was ticketed for the AFL last year before his wrist injury kept him out. Shortstop prospect Cale Iorg could join him in Arizona based on his strong closing stretch this season. | |
