Jackson looks to continue hot hitting vs. Tribe

If only Austin Jackson could play all of his games against the Indians.

The Tigers center fielder enters Sunday afternoon's series finale at Comerica Park having hit safely in 11 of 13 contests opposite the Tribe this season.

Acquired as part of a three-team offseason trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, Jackson has authored a fine freshman campaign in the wake of Granderson's departure. The 23-year-old Texas native's 12 three-hit games are the most by a Detroit rookie since 1980, when Ricky Peters collected 15.

Whatever the reason, Jackson has particularly excelled in games when the opposing uniform reads "Cleveland." The Tigers' leadoff hitter is batting .414 (24-for-58) with 14 runs, seven doubles and seven stolen bases vs. the Indians in 2010.

On Sunday, Jackson will take his hacks against another rookie, 22-year-old Jeanmar Gomez. The youngest player on the Tribe's 25-man roster has posted three victories and a sparkling 1.84 ERA through five Major League starts, the first of which came against the Tigers.

Gomez limited Detroit to a pair of unearned runs over seven sharp innings in his July 18 debut at Progressive Field. He'll aim to replicate that performance Sunday, when the Venezuelan right-hander opposes Tigers ace Justin Verlander.

"For his age, his composure is above average," Indians manager Manny Acta said of Gomez. "He hasn't been intimidated by anything up here so far. He just continues to go out there and pitch without fear.

"From what we've learned about him, he's not going to back down if a team hits him around. That's not the kind of guy he is."

Indians: Perez pitching well
Closer Chris Perez has allowed two earned runs in 19 2/3 innings of work dating back to June 28. The 25-year-old righty has converted 10 his past 11 save opportunities.

... The Tribe has turned a Major League-best 141 double plays. ... Cleveland has committed 91 errors, the most in the American League. ... The Indians have been shut out 10 times.

Tigers: Cabrera clubs Cleveland
Since joining Detroit prior to the 2008 season, first baseman Miguel Cabrera is hitting .330 (65-for-197) with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs in 50 contests against Cleveland.

... Reliever Phil Coke has registered a 1.27 ERA across 34 appearances since June 3.

Worth noting
With Saturday's 5-2 loss, the Indians fell to 48-50 at Comerica Park.

... Gomez is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in two road starts.

... Verlander has posted a 6.35 ERA over three outings vs. the Tribe in 2010.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Justin Verlander (13-8, 3.77 ERA)
Verlander called his game vs. the Yankees "the worst I've ever felt on the mound as a professional baseball player." He needed 114 pitches to last five innings with three runs allowed on five hits, walking five and striking out five in the loss.

INDIANS: RHP Jeanmar Gomez (3-1, 1.84 ERA)
Gomez might have suffered his first Major League loss Tuesday in Kansas City, but he still looked impressive in doing so. He allowed just two solo home runs over six innings but didn't get run support. He commanded his changeup well.
