Back home, Porcello faces stiff test vs. Yanks

One of Tigers righty Rick Porcello's childhood dreams will become a reality Thursday at Yankee Stadium. New York's lineup hopes to make it a nightmare of an afternoon.

Porcello, who is from New Jersey, will take the hill in the series finale Thursday against Phil Hughes. Detroit's starter used to attend games in the Bronx with his father as a child.

"The biggest thing is I have an opportunity to go out there and face one of the best teams in baseball," Porcello said.

Porcello will have his work cut out for him. Including Wednesday's 9-5 victory, the Yankees have won five of their last 10 and are 28 games over .500, one game shy of their high-water mark for the season.

The Tigers still lead the season series, 4-3.

In his previous outing, Porcello threw seven solid innings of two-run ball Saturday against the White Sox. He didn't get a decision, but the Tigers got a comeback win.

"I'm excited to go back out there," Porcello said. "I really felt like I had a good outing last outing, but I felt like there were a lot of outings I could've done better as far as pitching ahead of guys. If I can put those guys away earlier, I think that'll move the pitch count a little bit lower and let me pitch deeper, because those last two hitters in the seventh, I was taxed."

As for Hughes, he earned win No. 14 in his previous outing, throwing six innings and allowing three runs. He finished with one walk and no strikeouts.

Hughes had help. The Yanks hit five home runs, including three from Alex Rodriguez, in the game.

"I'm really lucky to have a great offense behind me, anytime you can look up and see that," Hughes said. "I feel like I've been throwing the ball OK here and there, and it seems like we've been scoring enough runs to win. It's a nice feeling."

Tigers: Cabrera reaches 30-homer plateau
Miguel Cabrera has 30 home runs, marking the sixth season in his career and the third straight season that he has hit at least 30 homers. He needs two RBIs to become the first Tiger with three straight seasons with at least 100 RBIs since Magglio Ordonez did it from 2006-08. ... Brennan Boesch was out of the lineup Wednesday night, and he was expected to be out of the lineup for Thursday afternoon's series finale. The club believes he needs to see pitches better and react to them much better. ... Catcher Gerald Laird (elbow) is day-to-day. ... Ordonez is scheduled to return to Detroit for a follow-up exam on his fractured right ankle. The club does not know if he will be available for a September stretch run.

Yankees: Pettitte unhappy with recovery
Andy Pettitte said he is frustrated with his recovery time from a left groin strain and must wait another week before even touching a mound. ... Rodriguez (calf) and Lance Berkman (ankle) are available to pinch-hit. Both are day-to-day. ... Derek Jeter has hit safely in 14 of his last 19 games and has scored 15 runs during that stretch. ... The Yankees are 62-0 when leading after the eighth inning. ... Mark Teixeira has reached base in 57 of his past 61 games.

Pettitte, Jorge Posada, A.J. Burnett, Hughes, Berkman, Javier Vazquez, Boone Logan and Austin Kearns, along with Yankees coaches Dave Eiland, Mick Kelleher and Rob Thomson and former Yankees pitcher David Cone, will be paired with special-needs children from the Beautiful People organization in a baseball game on the field at Yankee Stadium following Thursday's game.

TIGERS: RHP Rick Porcello (5-10, 5.53 ERA)
Porcello returns to Yankee Stadium, where his dad used to take him to games as a kid, with hopes of building on his seven solid innings of two-run ball last Saturday against the White Sox. He didn't get a decision, but the Tigers got a comeback win.

YANKEES: RHP Phil Hughes (13-5, 3.94 ERA)
Hughes earned won No. 14 in his last outing, throwing six innings and allowing three runs, though he proved hittable, ceding nine. He forced the Royals' hitters to put the ball in play, finishing with one walk and no strikeouts.

I can't understand what happened to Verlander....it seems something was off.

As for Rivera - he basically has 2 pitches...do they look at films in baseball? Surely he is hittable (Gonzo in WS).
I am just very disappointed because the Tigers do have potential. Mybe they can still salvage the season, but it will take a lot. Tody should be interesting after last night'es events (Leyland, call, etc).
