inning. Carmona pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on nine
hits, no walks and three strikeouts. He gave up a home run to Miguel
Cabrera in the second inning.

Tigers starter Armando Galarraga covers first base, vying for the final
out of his perfect game bid on Wednesday, June 2, at Comerica Park. But
first base umpire Jim Joyce ruled the Indians' Jason Donald was safe, a
call for which he later apologized to Galarraga. The Tigers won, 3-1.

Joyce faced a verbal assault from Tigers players and manager Jim
Leyland after the game but said he didn't blame them for anything that
was said. "If I had been Galarraga, I would have been the first one in
my face," Joyce said.
Galarraga walks away from Joyce after his hopes for perfection were
smashed. It would have been just the 21st perfect game in Major League
history, and the first ever by a Tigers pitcher.
