William Jennings (Billy) Buckner.

...Graduated from Salem High in Conyers, Ga., where he earned All-Region and All-State honors in baseball.

...Played 2 seasons at Young Harris (Ga.) College, where he was named to the 2003 NJCAA All-District team and received 2002 NJCAA All-America honors.

...Selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the ninth round of the 2003 draft, but did not sign.

...Attended the University of South Carolina and helped lead the Gamecocks to the 2004 College World Series.

...as a junior, went 7-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) with 105 strikeouts against 23 walks.


2006 Highlights

Split the season between High Desert (A) and Wichita (AA).

...compiled a 12-4 record with a 4.24 ERA (165.2 IP, 78 ER) in 29 starts combined.

...his 12 wins tied for the most in the organization.

...also combined to record 148 strikeouts, 3rd-most in the Royals system.

...Went 7-1 with a 3.90 ERA in 16 starts at High Desert, earning a spot on the California League's mid-season All-Star squad.

...Strung together back-to-back scoreless starts, going 8.0 scoreless innings on June 30 vs. Fresno and 7.0 scoreless innings on July 5 at Salt Lake City, allowing 4 hits in each start.

...Recalled again on July 19 and appeared in 4 games for the D-backs through Aug. 8, allowing 2 runs over 6.1 innings while striking out 5 and walking 2.

...Struck out 3 over season-high 2.2 innings on Aug. 3 against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

...Optioned to Tucson on Aug. 13 and appeared in only 2 games for the Sidewinders before being recalled for a third stint with the Major League club on Aug. 24.

Opened the season with the Major League club for the first time in his career and compiled a 4-6 record and 6.40 ERA (55 ER in 77.1 IP) over 16 appearances (13 starts) in 3 separate stints, having entered the season ranked as the D-backs' eighth-best prospect according to Baseball America.

... Named the organizational Pitcher of the Year for his efforts at Triple-A Reno, going 9-3 with a 3.32 ERA and .239 opponents average in 16 starts.

... In 10 home games (7 starts) this season, went 1-4 with a 9.53 ERA (42 ER in 39.2 IP) and a .333 opponents average (53-for-159).
