| GDT: GM2 5/12/10 - DET (19-14) vs NYY (21-11) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- vs --- Detroit Tigers vs. New York YankeesWednesday, May 12, 2010Comerica Park, Detroit, MIGame Time - 7:05 p.m. EDT______________________________________ Rainout may present bullpen puzzle By Tom Singer / MLB.comTeams playing in adverse conditions tend to point out that weather doesn't play favorites. "We both had to play under the same conditions," goes the saying. But a rainout can take sides, and the postponement of Tuesday's Yankees-Tigers game in Detroit could have favored the home team. Yankees manager Joe Girardi lamented the postponement, which may pressure Phil Hughes to reprise his recent long-winded dominance when he takes the mound for the evening portion of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader. The Tigers, conversely, gained a day to reload their bullpen after needing six relievers to pitch all nine innings of Monday's 5-4 win.Unless Javier Vazquez, the Yankees' Game 1 starter, recovered his mojo in extra bullpen sessions afforded by a long layoff between starts, the Yankees' bullpen could be kept busy behind him.Vazquez, working on 11 days' rest after his turn in the rotation was skipped, has averaged 4 2/3 innings in five starts. Thus, the bullpen gates have swung 17 times behind him, with relievers logging 20 innings. A repeat of that will leave Girardi with fewer options if Hughes needs rescue. "[Day-night doubleheaders] are just hard on your guys physically," Girardi said. "It's hard on your pitching staff. It's hard to throw a guy in consecutive games. It's just difficult." If the crisis presents itself, the easy solution will be for Hughes to just be himself. The young right-hander has gone seven innings in both of his May starts, holding the White Sox scoreless and yielding only two runs to the Red Sox in Boston. Tigers manager Jim Leyland figured he had averted a crisis when Tuesday's game was called off about an hour before it was scheduled to begin. After Leyland's bullpen had to cover on Monday for Dontrelle Willis, who was scratched due to a high fever, using up any more pitching in an incomplete game "would have been absolutely disastrous," the skipper said. Yankees: Test upcoming for ParkRight-hander Chan Ho Park, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring since mid-April, is slated to pitch on Wednesday in an extended spring game in Tampa, Fla. ... Entering Wednesday, the Yankees were 1-4 when Vazquez started and 20-6 when anyone else did. Tigers: Victory elusive for BondermanJeremy Bonderman, Detroit's starter for Wednesday's nightcap, is winless since his first start of the season, which came on April 10 against the Indians. The right-hander's ensuing four starts have all been against American League West teams. ... Leyland is becoming a Brennan Boesch fan. The rookie outfielder has made some fantastic plays and drove in 14 runs in his first 13 games. "When he hits it, something happens," Leyland said. "I like guys that knock 'em in." ______________________________________ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (1-1, 5.74 ERA)Bonderman lucked out his last outing, when a rainstorm that blew in off Lake Erie canceled out a miserable night. Pitching with a 7-1 lead, Bonderman gave up six straight runs in the third inning of a game against the Indians at Progressive Field, ultimately being tagged for six runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Luck factored in because, when the rain came, the teams hadn't played five innings. When the game was later postponed, that meant that Bonderman's stats -- like those of everyone who played that night -- vanished. The rough outing would have raised Bonderman's ERA above 7. Bonderman last faced the Yankees in 2008, going 1-1 against the Bronx Bombers before ending the season on the disabled list. NYY: RHP Phil Hughes (4-0, 1.69 ERA)Hughes will try for his third consecutive winning effort on Wednesday as the Yankees play the third game of their four-game series against the Tigers. Hughes was money once more on Friday at Fenway Park, hurling seven innings of two-run, seven-hit ball against the Red Sox, walking one and striking out seven. He is 2-2 with a 5.30 ERA in five career appearances vs. Detroit (three starts), including his first start of 2009 at Comerica Park last April 28, when he hurled six innings of scoreless, two-hit ball in an 11-0 rout. ______________________________________
From MLB Tigers Press Pass

The Tigers continue a nine-game homestand with the second game of a four-game series against the Yankees this evening. The club continues the homestand with a three-game series against the Red Sox beginning on Friday, before wrapping up the homestand with a two-game series versus the White Sox.
SIX STRAIGHT AT HOME: The Tigers posted a 5-4 win over the Yankees last night, the club’s sixth straight win at home. It marks the longest such streak by the club since the Tigers won eight straight at Comerica Park June 6-25, 2009.
HOME IS WHERE THE MOUND IS: The Tigers enter tonight’s game against the Yankees with a 3.54 ERA (117.0IP/46ER) in 13 games at Comerica Park this season. Detroit is fifth among all American League clubs with a 3.54 ERA at home.

(Source: Elias Sports Bureau)
DRIVING THEM IN: Brennan Boesch finished with three RBI last night versus the Yankees and he has now collected at least one RBI in eight of his first 13 career games with the Tigers. BOESCH PROVIDES EXTRA-BASE POP: Brennan Boesch has collected nine extra-base hits in his first 13 games with the Tigers. He has collected at least one extra-base hit in eight of the 13 games, becoming the first Tigers player since at least 1920 to collect at least one extra-base hit in eight of his first 13 career games.
AUSTIN ADDING UP THE HITS: Austin Jackson has hit safely in 27 of his first 31 major league games. He is just the second Tigers player since at least 1920 to collect at least one hit in at least 27 of his first 31 career games. Dale Alexander hit safely in 28 of his first 31 career games in 1929.
JACKSON’S MULTI-HIT MAGIC: Austin Jackson is leading the American League with 16 multi-hit games this season. He has collected the 16 multi-hit games in his first 31 career games, becoming the first Tigers player since at least 1920 to accomplish the feat.
CABRERA IN A GROOVE WITH RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION: Miguel Cabrera enters tonight’s game versus the Yankees hitting .500 (19x38) with runners in scoring position. He is tops among all American League players with a .500 batting average with runners in scoring position this season.
DAMON GETTING DIALED IN: Johnny Damon enters this evening’s game against the Yankees hitting .330 (31x94) with nine doubles, a triple, two home runs and 21 walks over his last 28 games dating back to April 10. He is fourth in the American League with a .453 on-base percentage during that stretch, while he is ninth with a .330 batting average.
ROOKIE IMPACT: Alex Avila, Brennan Boesch, Austin Jackson and Scott Sizemore have all impacted the Tigers lineup as rookies this season. The four players have combined to hit .296 (94x317) with 33 extra-base hits and 34 RBI this season. The 94 combined hits are 30.6 percent of Detroit’s total of 307 hits, while the 33 combined extra-base hits are 29.2 percent of Detroit’s total of 113 extra-base hits.
BULLISH BEHAVIOR: Tigers relievers have posted a 1.53 ERA (70.2IP/12ER) over the club’s last 21 games. Club relievers have compiled a 10-4 record and 2.22 ERA (109.2IP/27ER) through the club’s first 32 games this season. Tigers relievers lead the American League with 10 victories, a 2.22 ERA and 109.2 innings pitched.
