Nearly 80,000 tickets have been sold or allotted for the Michigan vs. Michigan State outdoor hockey game on Dec. 11, U-M said Wednesday.
U-M said more than 14,700 tickets were sold Wednesday, the first day of the public sale, for the game at Michigan Stadium.
The world record for attendance at an ice hockey game is 74,544 for Michigan against Michigan State at Spartan Stadium in 2001.
"Now that we have hit the 80,000 number, I am visualizing an opportunity to have over 100,000 in attendance," U-M athletic director David Brandon said. "This would make the experience for the players and fans an extra special day they will remember for many years to come."
The 3 p.m. game is being called "The Big Chill at the Big House" and the presenting sponsor is Arby's.
"This has just taken off," U-M hockey coach Red Berenson said. Everybody wants to be there. I think we'll be sold out before we know it."
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at mgoblue.com/tickets or by calling (734) 764-0247 or (866) 296-6849.
