| Tigers trade French; who is gonna be an awesome pitcher and a prospect for a 34 year old pitcher with a career 500 record
Gonna be another John Smoltz trade here
But I guess Ilitch has to make sure the Tigers get in the playoffs; lose to either the Yankees, Red Sox or Angels; then jack up ticket prices for the bandwagon jumping corporate fans who left after 2008; then get the common man to help the Pizza King get his new hockey arena so he can charge even more money for the Corporate Wings Nuts Fans
Hopefully; by next year I will be so out of Michigan!
Paying taxes so a billionaire owner can build a hockey arena for a bunch of millionaire Swedes, Canadians and Russians
Please!

| I dunno. Washburn doesn't seem like a bad asset right now. He helps an already good rotation, and will get more run support which means if we resign him, then there will be some good trade value next year if we don't want him. | |

Sign him to a big contract; then he won't do squat for the Tigers Be another big contract they have to eat Pitching is not the Tigers problem You have Verlander; Jackson, Gally, Porcello, with Bondo and Willis trying to comeback; If a trade was to made, it should have been for a hitter and maybe another relief pitcher

If a trade was to made, it should have been for a hitter and maybe another relief pitcher Willis is not going to be good. He's shown so time and time again. Bondo, who I really like, is going to have to work to get some velocity back even after he comes off the DL, and Gala isn't getting it done this year.

| Tigers acquire Washburn from Mariners AL Central leaders add veteran left-hander to all-righty rotation
By Jason Beck / MLB.com
07/31/09 1:33 PM ET
CLEVELAND -- For the third time in four years, the Tigers have pulled off a trade around the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. This time, they filled their need for starting pitching with a veteran left-hander on a roll, acquiring Jarrod Washburn from Seattle in exchange for left-handers Luke French and Mauricio Robles.
The 34-year-old Washburn will be eligible for free agency at the end of the year. However, his contribution to the Mariners made him worth the rental price for the Tigers. Washburn owns an 8-6 record with a 2.64 ERA, third-lowest in the American League, while allowing just 109 hits over 133 innings with 33 walks and 79 strikeouts.
If the Tigers needed any more evidence how much of an impact Washburn can make, they saw it when he baffled the Tigers on July 23 at Comerica Park. Washburn pitched seven scoreless innings against Detroit that day, allowing just two hits in his fourth consecutive victory, before before he allowed a run and scattered five hits in seven innings against the Blue Jays in his most recent start on Tuesday.
Washburn has allowed just three runs on 20 hits in 36 2/3 innings over his past five starts, all of them Mariners victories. That recent level of production appealed to the Tigers, who were looking for help in a rotation that had featured two rookie starters for the past month.
While the Tigers had needs in their lineup as well as their rotation, the latter proved especially meaningful. Washburn should provide more than depth in a rotation fronted by Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson. He should be a productive left-hander to balance out an otherwise right-handed starting staff that also includes Rick Porcello and Armando Galarraga.
Whether that makes Detroit an AL Central favorite remains to be seen, but it allows the Tigers to feel comfortable about their rotation heading into the season's final two months.
The Mariners were reported to have interest in signing Washburn to a contract extension. Washburn is represented by agent Scott Boras, who's known for preferring that his clients enter free agency rather than re-sign. Given that, this very much reflects a short-term deal for the Tigers, but one they were willing to make given the situation.
Washburn will likely make his Tigers debut early next week in Detroit, where the Tigers will host the Orioles on Monday-Wednesday. French's spot in the rotation comes up in Monday's series opener.
The 23-year-old French cracked the Tigers' rotation last month following steady success at Triple-A Toledo. He went 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances for the Tigers, but lasted six innings in only one of his five starts. He quickly ascended the Tigers' development ladder after being selected in the eighth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.
Robles, who turned 20 years old in March, has split this season between Class A West Michigan and Lakeland, going 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA and 111 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings. He allowed just 79 hits in that span.
This is the third time in four years that the Tigers have pulled off a deal within 48 hours of the Deadline. Detroit swapped Ivan Rodriguez for Kyle Farnsworth last year, and acquired Sean Casey at the 2006 Deadline in exchange for Minor League pitcher Brian Rogers.

| Saturday, August 1, 2009 Jarrod Washburn solidifies rotation for stretch, but no deal for bat Tom Gage / The Detroit News
Cleveland -- Maybe the dugout will bring him better luck.
A year and a day after announcing in a hallway here that the Tigers had just traded Pudge Rodriguez to the Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth, Dave Dombrowski chose another direction.
He discussed Friday's deadline-day acquisition of left-hander Jarrod Washburn in the Tigers' dugout.
An intentional switch? You never know, considering the rampant superstitions in Major League Baseball.
"That one didn't work real well," Dombrowski said with a smile. "I like this setting better."
But just as sure as Dombrowski choosing another direction for his session with the media, so, too, does this deal have to go in another direction for the Tigers.
The Farnsworth trade didn't help at all. In fact, it hurt. The reliever blew saves in two of his first three appearances.
Washburn needs to help a lot more than that as a starter if the Tigers hope to win the American League Central. But it looks like he's in a position do so.
For one thing, he's 4-0 with a 0.74 ERA in his last five starts.
For another, his ERA of 2.64 is the third-lowest in the AL and his batting average-against of .223 is the second-lowest.
Not only that, but the Tigers saw for themselves in the Mariners' 2-1 win at Comerica Park on July 23 that Washburn's sinker is sinking more than it has in the past and that his cutter has become an extremely effective pitch against right-handers. So, never mind he was 23-43 for the Mariners the previous three years. In this, his free-agent season, he's pitching extremely well.
That's why when Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik called Dombrowski late Thursday night, asking for left-handers Luke French and Mauricio Robles in return -- Robles being an attractive prospect at Class A Lakeland and French holding down a spot in the Tigers' rotation -- Dombrowski didn't hesitate to make the deal.
Washburn, 34, who was in Texas with the Mariners, planned to join the Tigers in Cleveland and will make his first start for them Tuesday at home against Baltimore.
"Jarrod Washburn is pitching as well as anybody in the league right now," Dombrowski said. "He's a quality veteran. Even though we talked about hitting, we felt we really needed to bolster our starting rotation with a little more veteran status if we could."
Said manager Jim Leyland: "It's the way trades are supposed to be made. It helps both teams."
But the inconsistent offense -- how close did the Tigers come to making a trade for a hitter?
"Not close at all," Dombrowski said. "We went back to a couple of clubs with some names, looking for the right guy, but I don't think we were ever close at all. I will say that we primarily focused on corner outfielders.
"But I think we can score enough runs to win."
Washburn might be just a two-month rental, though, because he can be a free agent after the season. That obviously wasn't a deterrent.
"Every year you look at things in a different scope of where you are," Dombrowski said. "In this situation, we're trying to win."

| It better be a two month rental
Because if the Tigers are foolish enough to give Washburn a big contract as a free agent; he either go on the DL or pitch like shit in 2010
