Guillen feels soreness; Tigers bring him to Detroit

The Detroit Tigers recalled outfielder Carlos Guillen from his rehab assignment in Class A Lakeland today, but he was not activated.

Guillen, who was coming back from a right shoulder inflammation, was expected to play for Toledo before rejoining the Tigers, but that changed because he felt more soreness. He was to be examined today.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he might have an update after tonight's game.

Guillen hit .250 during his five games in Lakeland, with a double and four walks.

• Leyland said reliever Joel Zumaya told him he is not ready to pitch. Zumaya had more X rays and MRI exams, but they shed no more light on his arm issues.

• Pitcher Nate Robertson threw nearly 100 balls from 120 feet and said his left elbow felt good. His surgery removed four small lumps from the elbow, and he said he's close to being able to go on a rehabilitation assignment. He intends to work himself into shape as a starter, if possible.

• Pitcher Jeremy Bonderman said he threw hard off a mound for five minutes in his attempt to come back from thoracic outlet compression syndrome surgery. He went on the disabled list June 9 after his last comeback attempt. "It feels a little better and a lot freer," he said. "The third time's the charm."

• Leyland also added that pitcher Justin Verlander will start the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox. The second-game starter, who will not be a pitcher currently on the roster, will not be announced until Wednesday.

If Robertson can come back as a starter that would be good. He was pretty productive out of the pen, and if he has that command in the rotation, it would be good for us.

We could move Gala to the pen if Robertson can come back as a starter.

Too bad Bonderman wasn't ready to pitch on Friday. I don't have much confidence in Bonine.
