It's official! The 1960s is the greatest decade for music in history! I'm not just some biased hippie either - I was born in 1987 long after the 1960s were over.
What's great is all the diversity. I mean the #1 song in 1960 was this:
Theme From a Summer Place ~Percy Faith
That same decade you had this:
Light My Fire ~The Doors
and this:
White Rabbit ~Jefferson Airplane
Of course it wasn't all psychedelic rock, regular rock, and instrumentals. They had other stuff, too. Rolling Stone Magazine calls this the greatest song ever written:
Like a Rolling Stone ~Bob Dylan
I haven't even mentioned the most famous band of all-time yet, The Beatles.

I'm not very good at sorting things out by decades. I thought this was a mid-1950s song that didn't suck. Turns out it's not (not even close!) and it's a 1960s song. Whether or not it makes my iPod is TBD. Thoughts?
1965 - Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
Upon further inspection, this is "one of the most recorded songs of the 20th Century". It originates in the 1950s. The version I just posted is the 1960s version and possibly the most famous. Or is it? I don't know! Any experts on the subject matter know whose version is generally considered the best?
More fun trivia! This version I posted is from 1965. It was #1 in the UK...in 1990! It took 35 years! This song has been #1 in the UK by FOUR different artists!

Yes, I would say this version is the most popular and most famous (and probably the most successful). I knew it originated in the 50s, but this one is a sixties song.

1969 - Undun - The Guess Who
Spoiler:
She's come undun She didn't know what she was headed for And when I found what she was headed for It was too late
She's come undun She found a mountain that was far too high And when she found out she couldn't fly It was too late
It's too late She's gone too far She's lost the sun
She's come undun She wanted truth but all she got was lies Came the time to realize And it was too late
She's come undun She didn't know what she was headed for And when I found what she was headed for Mama, it was too late
It's too late She's gone too far She's lost the sun She's come undun
Too many mountains, and not enough stairs to climb Too many churches and not enough truth Too many people and not enough eyes to see Too many lives to lead and not enough time
It's too late She's gone too far She's lost the sun
She's come undun Doe-doe-doe-doe-doe doe un doe-doe-doe un doe-doe-doe Doe doe-doe-doe-doe un doe-doe-doe doe-doe-doe Doe doe-doe-doe doe doe-doe-doe doe doe
------ flute ------
It's too late She's gone too far She's lost the sun
She's come undun She didn't know what she was headed for And when I found what she was headed for It was too late
She's come undun She found a mountain that was far too high And when she found out she couldn't fly Mama, it was too late
It's too late She's gone too far She's lost the sun
She's come undun No no-no-no-no-no no Doe doe doe-doe

EDIT: Video replaced because other one was no longer available...
Spoiler:
Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine There's somethin' special on my mind Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood, whoa yeah Somethin' tells me I'm into something good (Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
She's the kind of girl who's not too shy And I can tell I'm her kind of guy She danced close to me like I hoped she would (she danced with me like I hoped she would) Somethin' tells me I'm into something good (Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
We only danced for a minute or two But then she stuck close to me the whole night through Can I be fallin' in love She's everthing I've been dreamin' of She's everthing I've been dreamin' of
I walked her home and she held my hand I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could (I asked to see her and she told me I could) Somethin' tells me I'm into something good (Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin') (Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin', ahhh)

Spoiler:
Every time I see you lookin' my way Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat? In the car or walking down the highway Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat?
When you move up closer to me I get a feelin' that's ooo-wee Can't you hear the poundin' of my heartbeat 'cause you're the one I love, you're the one I love
When I feel you put your arms around me Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat? Then I'm glad, I'm mighty glad I found you Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat?
When you asked me to meet your Ma I knew that baby, we'd be going far Can't you hear the poundin' of my heartbeat? 'cause you're the one I love, you're the one I love
------ rhythm guitar ------
All my friends are cryin' out to meet you Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat? Now's the time to go and see the preacher Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat?
Wedding bells are gonna chime Baby, baby, you're gonna be mine Can't you hear the poundin' of my heartbeat 'cause you're the one I love, you're the one I love
Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat? Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat? Baby, baby, can't you hear my heartbeat?

1965 - Silhouettes - Herman's Hermits
Spoiler:
Took a walk and passed your house late last night All the shades were pulled and drawn way down tight From within, the dim light cast two silhouettes on the shade Oh what a lovely couple they made
Put his arms around your waist, held you tight Kisses I could almost taste in the night Wondered why I'm not the guy who's silhouette's on the shade I couldn't hide the tears in my eyes
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah...
------ lead guitar ------
Lost control and rang your bell, I was sore Let me in or else I'll beat down your door When two strangers who have been two silhouettes on the shade Said to myself "you're on the wrong block"
Rushed out to your house with wings on my feet Loved you like I'd never loved you my sweet Vowed that you and I would be two silhouettes on the shade All of our days, two silhouettes on the shade
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah...

Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter Girls as sharp as her are somethin' rare But it's sad, she doesn't love me now She's made it clear enough it ain't no good to pine
She wants to return those things I bought her Tell her she can keep them just the same Things have changed, she doesn't love me now She's made it clear enough it ain't no good to pine
Walkin' about, even in a crowd, well You'll pick her out, makes a bloke feel so proud
If she finds that I've been round to see you (round to see you) Tell her that I'm well and feelin' fine (feelin' fine) Don't let on, don't say she's broke my heart I'd go down on my knees but it's no good to pine
