| JOHN LOWE'S BLOG Shades of '06 playoff year: Tigers take A.L. lead in pitching

In routing the Royals on Monday, the Tigers also passed the Royals for the league lead in ERA.
That's right -- as of this morning, the Tigers have given up fewer earned runs per nine innings than any other team in the A.L.
Here's how it stands:
Tigers 3.87
Kansas City 3.98
The Tigers hired Rick Knapp as the new pitching coach after they finished 12th in the league in ERA last season. Knapp replaced Chuck Hernandez, who was the Tigers' pitching coach the last time they led the league in ERA. That was in 2006, the only time they've made the playoffs since 1987.
In 2006, the Tigers clinched that playoff spot in Kansas City -- the same place where on Monday afternoon they took the league lead in ERA. | |
