MLB pulls Chief Wahoo off Cleveland's '09 Stars and Stripes cap


Major League Baseball is rolling out a new round of Stars and Stripes caps for Memorial Day and it appears that they designed the lids with some common sense this time around.
Please remember last season, when the first round of special hats included a stars-and-stripes emblazoned version of Chief Wahoo on Cleveland's cap. A mini-controversy erupted with most people agreeing that it probably wasn't a good idea to endorse the logo with the elements of the American flag and the ideals that it represents.
This year, MLB is avoiding the firestorm completely and going with the alternative that I suggested, opting to modify the block 'C' cap Bill Clinton wore when throwing out the first pitch at Progressive Field in 1994.
So is progress being made? Yes, but only slowly ... MLB.com still sells the '08 version. The caps cost $36.99 this year (up $2 from '08) and the usual "portion of the proceeds" will benefit the Welcome Back Veterans fund.
But buyer beware if you're purchasing in the name of supporting our soldiers: Last year, MLB couldn't be bothered to define what they mean by "portion of the proceeds."

does this mean they are going to change the team name too?

I think they're only changing the hat so that Chief Wahoo doesn't appear with an American flag on July 4. Other than that Chief Wahoo remains on the hat.

Right. I knew it was just for the stars and stripes logo. My point: when does the PC stop?

Isn't plastering an American flag all over a logo kind of iffy though? I mean people probably wouldn't like it if Wal-Mart or McDonalds had their logo on an American flag.

The caps cost $36.99 this year (up $2 from '08) and sales will benefit the Welcome Back Veterans fund. Thankfully, MLB has finally somewhat defined the amount it's donating from each hat instead of leaving us completely in the dark like they did last year:

"Major League Baseball Properties, Inc will donate all of the proceeds it receives from the sale of the caps to Welcome Back Veterans. In addition, MLB.com will donate an additional $1 to Welcome Back Veterans for each cap purchased through www.mlb.com."

I don't really care one way or another on this issue but I agree completely with your last point. There's all sorts of hats they want fans to buy...green one for St. Patrick's day, Patriotic ones for 7/4, alternate ones, home ones, away ones, batting practice home ones, batting practice away ones, pink ones for mother's day, blue ones for father's day, and probably a few more.

I was trying to do that but the addresses weren't copying correctly for some reason.

I don't care for either version, but I think the 2009 version is slightly better...maybe.

You are welcome. I had to get the pics from the store webpage, the one in the article would not copy correctly.

I thought those red caps looked stupid; And they didn't match with most teams uniforms either; Except maybe the Twins[ who were wearing their retro Twins uniforms with Twins in red letters and the Angels

I kinda liked the new hats.

Gives them more diversity and modernization in a way then the other teams, since no one else has a red hate cept the Angels. (and maybe some others...)
