zumaya's out again

yup, detroit---thunderstorms & the occasional tornado! But hardly disaster prone, except in the employment sector!

But, they are employed, no problem there. I lived in the Detroit burbs 20 years with no tornado problems. Like you said occasional tornado!

Tigers reliever Bobby Seay had taken a snapshot during a recent fishing trip, and, like most proud anglers, was eager to share it with friends. On Thursday, he sent it from his phone to closer Todd Jones.

Jones' reply -- something about Joel Zumaya and shoulder surgery -- startled Seay. At first, he didn't believe it.

"Then I checked the Web site," Seay said.

With that, he learned the troubling news: Zumaya, the Tigers' fearsome reliever, would be lost for the first half of next season after undergoing a reconstruction of the AC joint in his right shoulder.

Seay, Zumaya's roommate throughout the 2007 season, saw firsthand how difficult it was for Zumaya to miss 3 1/2 months after suffering a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger.

And Seay, like any pitcher, knows the inherent severity of any injury to the shoulder.

"A finger is one thing, but a shoulder is something different," Seay said. "It's going to be a bigger setback than the finger thing, but he's young. Hopefully, this will be the end of the freak injuries for him, and we can sit back one day and laugh about it.

"It's bad luck for a good kid."

Matt Mantei, the Stevensville resident and former closer who is planning a comeback with the Tigers, said Friday that his AC joint surgery in 2004 was not as extensive as Zumaya's. Mantei's shoulder was cleaned up; Zumaya's was reconstructed.

Mantei, who has had two shoulder surgeries, said he would be willing to talk with Zumaya during spring training about the mental rigors of rehabilitation.

"He's taking a short trip down Mantei Road right now," Mantei said. "Hopefully, he comes out all right. He's going to be needed in the bullpen."

Reliever Jason Grilli, a good friend of Zumaya's, said he was "as shocked as everybody else" to learn about the surgery.

"I feel horrible," Grilli said. "I'm going to be praying for him. It's a tough blow for the team, for the organization. I know they're going to have to make some extra moves."

Zumaya's injury has forced the Tigers to focus on fortifying the bullpen, and re-signing Jones, one of the best closers available on the free-agent market, would be a start. As of Friday evening, club officials had yet to express interest in free-agent closer Francisco Cordero, according to Cordero's agent, Bean Stringfellow.

Seay said he has not spoken with Jones about his decision, but predicted Jones would return -- especially now that the club would give him the chance to be a full-time closer.

"I can't picture going back to spring training," Seay said, "without seeing that moustache."

When asked if re-signing under these circumstances would qualify Jones as a local hero, Seay said: "He's a hero in Detroit, period. I can tell that when I walk with him to the bullpen. (The fans) may boo him, but not as much as they cheer for him. And he knows that."
