| Detroit News columnist Rob Parker resigns following Marinelli controversy
FREE PRESS STAFF • January 6, 2009
Detroit News sports columnist Rob Parker has left the paper, two weeks after he was criticized for asking Lions coach Rod Marinelli if he had wished his daughter had married a better defensive coordinator.
Managing editor Don Nauss said Parker resigned last week.
Parker declined to comment Tuesday, other than to say “I love Detroit, and I don’t plan on leaving.”
Parker, a New York native, said he would continue to comment Sunday nights on “Sports Final Edition” on WDIV-TV, host “Sports Rap” with former Lion Ron Rice on Saturday nights on Channel 38 and appear regularly on “ESPN First Take.”
Joe Barry is Marinelli’s son-in-law and was defensive coordinator during the Lions’ 0-16 season. On Dec. 21, after a loss to New Orleans, Parker asked Marinelli during a news conference about his daughter’s decision to marry Barry. The coach considered it a personal attack. Parker later apologized, said he wasn’t trying to hurt Marinelli or his family and considered it a light moment after a painful loss. | |

| I don't blame him for his comments to Marinelli! The coach deserved it. | |

| I don't read the Detroit-area newspapers so I wasn't aware of that. Maybe it's good he's gone. | |
